Weddle's mastery continues for Falcons; Sniffen dually-effective for Spartans

Dylan Weddle

Kalani baseball  •   #11  P  Senior

Dylan Weddle is having himself quite the season this spring.

The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to the Kalani senior and right-handed pitcher: a 5-0 win-loss record with an earned run average of 1.81. Both marks are tops among all Division I pitchers (with at least 20.0 innings of work) across the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

Count his coach among those not surprised in the least.

"I think the greatest thing about Dylan is what people don't see, it's the behind-the-scenes work that he puts in to mastering his craft," Falcons coach Reyn Nagamine said.

"I can't put enough emphasis on that and I think that's a big part of why he's having so much success, so I really want to put it out there that he's been putting in a lot of work on his own — not just this year, but the past two-three years — and it's finally coming to fruition; It's all just a testament to his hard work," Nagamine added.

But the statistics are not just nice to look at, they've resulted in wins, too. In fact, Kalani has won each of Weddle's five starts this season. In addition, he has made two relief appearances out of the bullpen. In 31 innings pitched this year, Weddle has allowed 26 hits and only eight earned runs. He has registered a total of 27 strikeouts against seven walks.

"I think if there's one word I had to describe him, just to encompass everything, it would be efficiency," Nagamine said. "He's very efficient. His fastball command has been great all year and I think that's what's leading to his overall success. Up until this point, I think what's been the most impressive with him, is due to his efficiency, it's kept his overall pitch counts down, so he's a guy that's going to attack the strike zone."

In addition to his fastball, however, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound Weddle has also established firm command of his secondary pitches.

"His slider and change-up, yeah," Nagamine elaborated. "I think that one area of emphasis was developing those secondary pitches — both his slider and his change-up — and I think it's definitely at a much better point than it was a year ago and not just having those secondary pitches, but also having command of those secondary pitches is a real game-changer, so he's put himself in a real good spot."

Weddle opened the season with a six-inning outing against Castle, in which he allowed one earned run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. He upped the ante with his next start, when he logged six scoreless innings of three-hit ball with eight strikeouts and no walks.

In his final start of March, Weddle went the distance against Moanalua and gave up only one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

"We couldn't ask for more than what he's doing this year and I think the success is a characteristic of his great work ethic. It's definitely showing, it's definitely paying off so we're really happy for him," Nagamine said.

Weddle's most recent start came Saturday against perennial Eastern Division frontrunner Kailua. Against the Surfriders' lineup of veteran bats, Weddle fanned six batters, walked two others and allowed one earned run on two hits over 6 1/3 innings of work in the 7-5 win for the Falcons.

"I think the stats don't really reflect on what was done," said Nagamine, whose team held a 6-0 lead after four innings.

"We ran into a little snag in the last inning or two, but overall it was very impressive and it was very good to see because Kailua is a great ball club and every time you play those guys, you can't really afford to make too many mistakes, but that was the pinnacle, I think, of Dylan's performances. Maybe with the exception of the last inning, he was efficient to the strike zone, his tempo was great and just overall his leadership was awesome."

Kalani overcame four errors to get the win over Kailua, which had its five-game win streak snapped.

The teams entered the game with identical records, but the win pushed the Falcons (8-2) ahead of the Surfriders (7-3) and into sole possession of first place in the OIA Division I East with one week remaining in the 12-game regular season.

"That was a big one, definitely," Nagamine affirmed. "Kailua had been playing some great baseball and so for us to come out on top was a big one."

Nagamine noted that while Weddle is typically on the mellow side, he showed a bit of another side Saturday.

"He is a quiet guy, but he loves to compete and we saw a little bit of that, which was fun to see on Saturday. He got a little fired up after a couple of inning. He's not normally a rah-rah guy; He loves to compete, but he does his deal and kind of keeps to himself, but we saw a little bit of that come out, so that was fun to see."

Weddle's mostly-quiet confidence, along with his aforementioned efficiency on the mound, has cultivated much optimism amongst his teammates and coaches when he toes the rubber.

"He's a bulldog. He's a fierce competitor, so along with the skillset, along with his pitching repertoire, that just adds making it very easy for us, and as teammates, knowing that he's on the mound, because every time he's on the mound you know you're gonna get a competitor, you know you're going to get his absolute best that day," Nagamine said.

Given his work ethic, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Weddle is not the superstitious type.

"I wouldn't call him superstitious, but I would call him very methodical," Nagamine expressed. "I think he definitely has his routines set in place to set him up for every time he goes out there, so that's something that, I think, sets him apart as well."

Weddle, who ranks among the statewide pitching leaders in several statistical categories, including wins and earned run average, is expected to get one more start in before the start of the OIA playoffs next week.

"It's a real proud moment for us as a coaching staff to see a guy basically experience the rewards of all the work, of all the blood, sweat and tears that he's put into the game and we couldn't be more proud," Nagamine said.

Kalani is assured of no lower than a second-place finish in the OIA D1 East and consequently will have a first-round bye in the 12-team OIA tournament.

Weddle and the Falcons will play Roosevelt (5-6) Wednesday and Kaiser (5-5) Saturday to wrap up the regular season. Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kahala Community Park.

Jenna Sniffen

Maryknoll softball  •   #13  INF/P  Sophomore

There is simply no tomorrow in the mind of Jenna Sniffen.

Instead, the Maryknoll sophomore pitcher and third baseman puts it all on the line each time she takes the field and the numbers certainly reflect that tenacity.

Sniffen, who bats fourth in the batting order for the Spartans, has hit the cover off the ball to the tune of a .556 batting average. In eight games this season, she has collected 15 hits in 27 at-bats, with 18 runs batted in and seven runs scored.

The 5-foot-4 Sniffen has belted four home runs this season, including two in Saturday's 15-8 win over Mid-Pacific at McKinley Tiger Softball Stadium.

"There's no doubt that she has Division-I (collegiate) power," Maryknoll coach John Uekawa said of Sniffen, who batted 3 for 4 with seven RBI against the Owls.

It was her second mammoth outing against Mid-Pac this season; She had a 4-for-5 day at the plate with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored in the Spartans' first meeting against the Owls back on March 23.

Given what Sniffen did in her freshman year, however, her off-the-charts production this season isn't all that surprising. After all, she batted an astronomical .717 with 17 home runs in 11 games, according to Uekawa. Sniffen was tabbed for Gatorade State Player of the Year honors in her very first varsity season.

But what sets her apart are the intangibles, Uekawa noted.

"Her drive to win, that's what makes her special. I mean, everybody wants to win, but she has that never-say-quit attitude about winning. All she wants to do is win and it's not only for herself, it's for her team and the second thing is that we gotta remember, she's only 15 years old, but she acts mature for her age," he explained.

Sniffen accounted for 40 runs driven in and 24 runs scored in 2021 and this season she's picked up where she left off. She has reached base safely in all but one game this year: a 10-3 loss to Kamehameha, when she batted 0 for 3.

Since then, however, Sniffen and the Spartans have been rolling. They have reeled off four straight victories; the sophomore slugger has gone 7 for 13 at the dish during that stretch, with three homers and 13 RBI.

Uekawa said the difference in his players has been their approach with a bat in their hands.

"We always believe in line drives and contact, (but against) Kamehameha we were swinging for the fences, every single player," the 17th-year Maryknoll coach said. "Now everybody knows what their responsibilities are and its led by those three."

The trio of leaders that Uekawa referenced are senior second baseman Carys Murakami, junior shortstop Nellian "Nelly" McEnroe-Marinas and Sniffen.

The triumvirate have been vital to Maryknoll turnaround since a 1-3 start this season.

"We kind of were overconfident at the beginning of the season," disclosed Uekawa, whose team went 8-0 in the Glenn Ah Sam Trojan Softball Classic back in the preseason, but lost its ILH opener to Punahou by a score of 10-3.

"Overconfident and once you get stuck in that you cannot really change it, so as the season has gone on, three individuals I have assigned to take a leadership role and so Nelly, Jenna and Carys, I told them to ‘take it upon yourself to let's move forward,' " Uekawa added.

Maryknoll picked up a pivotal victory last Tuesday in the form of a 7-4 win over Iolani — which, at the time, was the No. 1 team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings.

Sniffen certainly paid a large role in it; She hit a two-run home run, had an RBI-sacrifice fly and also drew a walk, in addition to her complete-game effort in the pitching circle.

"For us, that particular game was a must-win for us," Uekawa said of the victory over the Raiders, who beat the Spartans, 6-5, in their first go-around.

Although she allowed 10 hits, Sniffen held Iolani to a season-low four runs. She struck out five batters and issued only one walk.

"She did what we asked for, to begin with is throw strikes and the second one is don't walk anybody, because that's what they breed themselves on, especially talking Iolani, that's how they start rallies," Uekawa said. "We couldn't afford anybody getting on base free — they had to earn it — so that was the key and the other part is your demeanor and not worrying about what happened, but what you're gonna do. That's what we preach all the time: a different frame of mind."

Uekawa, whose roster includes seven seniors, has utilized both Sniffen and fellow-right-handed pitcher Sherreigh "Ua" Nakoa-Chung in the circle this season, but the former has seen her role increase as of late. Sniffen has gone the distance in each of her last three starts — all of them, wins.

"All she wanted was the ball and that's key, right? It's one thing to want to pitch, it's another thing that you want the ball and it's hard to describe, but that only comes out in basically these situations where it's intense," Uekawa said. "The true grit, hammer-it-out (style) is the the thing that is most noticeable with her; She's intense beyond limits and that's not very characteristic of a sophomore."

Sniffen's competitive nature never takes a break, Uekawa pointed out.

"She comes in full-bore all the way; you don't have to worry about motivating her. Sometimes she's too intense, to be honest, with the team that we have, so it's a matter of calming her down; it's strange, you don't find many players that way, but the thing about her is she can prove it," he said. "You've got players who can ‘rah-rah', but runners on second and third, two outs, strikeout, no can produce, but she lives that, she bleeds that, she wants to be the one and so does Nelly and so does Carys."

Sniffen tossed a complete game four-hitter to lead Maryknoll to a 9-3 win over Kamehameha Monday.

The Spartans (5-3) will host the Warriors (5-3) in a playoff for second place in the ILH Division I first round at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sand Island State Recreation Area. The winner will also be the No. 2 seed (behind Iolani) in the league's second round (double-elimination tournament), which gets underway Monday.
