Iwamura's grand slam led Lunas in extras; Hernandez fueled Bulldogs to latest win

Vincent Iwamura

Lahainaluna baseball  •   #3  INF/P  Senior

The stars aligned for Vincent Iwamura and the Lahainaluna baseball team last Friday.

Iwamura, a senior infielder and pitcher for the Lunas, belted a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift his team to a 9-5 win over King Kekaulike in the rubber match of a three-game series at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.

After Na Alii took the opening game of the series by a score of 7-5 Wednesday, Lahainaluna captured game 2 Thursday, 5-4.

The Lunas held a 2-1 lead after the first inning and stretched it to a 4-2 cushion after three. However, Kekaulike tallied three runs in the top of the fifth to pull ahead, 5-4, before Lahainaluna tied it with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The score held through the bottom of the eighth, when the Lunas loaded the bases to bring Iwamura up to bat.

Iwamura took the first pitch for a strike on a fastball down in the zone. The very next pitch was another fastball, but this one he didn't take. Instead, Iwamura put a healthy swing on it and drilled a towering fly ball well over the left field fence.

Lahainaluna coach Danton Hong said that Iwamura's blast was a no-doubter.

"Yeah, this one was kind of magical, you know?," Hong said.

"It's senior night, we had bases loaded, two outs and he just drove on. At the crack of the bat and based on the flight of the ball, I was like, ‘This ball is out of here.' It was pretty awesome," Hong said.

As he rounded the bases, the normally demure Iwamura couldn't help but let out some jubilation and his teammates certainly did the same.

"Everybody came out of the dugout and pretty much dog-piled him," Hong recalled. "He couldn't believe what had happened as well, but I think he knew once he hit the ball that he hit it well."

Hong said that Iwamura's homer went through a group of trees well beyond the left field fence at Maehara Stadium.

"It went through the trees and disappeared somewhere back there," he noted.

Hong described Iwamura's swing similarly to his stature.

"Vincent is short and compact and he has that type of swing as well: short and compact," Hong said. "It was pretty much do or die and it could have gone either way for either team, but the pitcher couldn't walk him already so he was forced to throw it over the plate and sometimes all the stars line up and it did for us that night. Like I said, it was senior night and that's what made it even more special."

The extra-inning heroics were a bit surreal to be a part of, Hong said.

"Needless to say, it was exciting. The guys were just elated, the whole stadium erupted and it was some of those moments in time where it'll be engrained in everybody's minds and it was awesome. We see it on TV with Major Leagues and walk-offs and stuff, but to see it in high school and to see it in person, it's awesome and I'm just so happy for the guys," Hong said.

Hong was especially happy for Iwamura, who has been on the varsity team since his freshman year.

"Maybe he couldn't believe what just happened, but sometimes in baseball stuff happens, especially in high school baseball, where it ain't over 'til it's over, but Vincent is a very good kid. His grades are good, he's physically fit and easy to talk to and a pretty humble kid," Hong said.

Iwamura is a student of the game, to be sure.

"He's just pretty fluent in the game. Vincent handles the ball well, he has a good IQ for the game. He's very calm in his demeanor, nothing pretty much rattles him and I can also say for a short guy, he's very compact and very strong in the legs and he hits for power," Hong added.

The 5-foot-5, 170-pound Iwamura primarily plays shortstop, but will be used as a relief pitcher, among other roles this season.

"In this particular game we had him catching, but Vincent has always been a starter. We've always had him at short and of course he can play the middles no problem — he can catch, he can pitch — but as far as Vincent, he's just one of those guys that you have to have in the lineup because he always makes contact, he'll drive it deep and he has a good glove," Hong said of the right-handed Iwamura, who bats third in the Lunas' batting order and is part of a nucleus of veterans who provide most of the leadership for the rest of their teammates.

"I think, for the most part, we have a core group of seniors that kind of take on that leadership role," Hong said of the quintet made up of Iwamura, Nephi Hong, Kealaula Medeiros, Ryan Pagdilao and Tony Felice.  "Even when they workout, the five of them will run it and the five of them, I want to say, played together since Little League time."

Iwamura, who will play for Linn-Benton Community College (Albany, Oregon) next year, finished the game going 2 for 5 at the plate with his four runs batted in.

"I think for just that moment in time, it was just spectacular and as for the team, they were out of their minds," Hong said. "They were very happy and we were happy for them."

Iwamura and the Lunas (3-6) sit in third place in the Maui Interscholastic League Division I standings. They will play Baldwin (6-0), the No. 4 team in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, in a three-game series Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Maehara Stadium.

Anela Hernandez

Waialua softball  •   #22  P/INF  Senior

Call Anela Hernandez the consummate team player.

The Waialua senior softball player has certainly paid her dues in her three-plus years on the team, according to coach Rodney Dicion.

"She was always a big value to this team ever since she came to the varsity and since she was a freshman, she's been one of the hardest-working ones," he said of Hernandez, a 5-foot-3 right-handed pitcher and first baseman.

Hernandez slotted into the heart of the order for the Bulldogs since her first year on varsity three seasons ago.

"She was a younger girl and still in club play, but she was all excited to be in a high school game when it came to her ninth grade year and she was my No. 3 hitter right away because she had a bat," Dicion said.

As a freshman in 2019, Hernandez led the team with 22 base hits and recorded a .415 batting average. She drove in 24 runs and scored 18 times en route to both All-OIA and All-Hawaii D2 first team recognition. Hernandez logged just 5 2/3 innings in three appearances in the pitching circle that year.

Her sophomore season, of course, was wiped away due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Bulldogs played only three games in the unofficial 2021 season last spring. Hernandez batted 4 for 12 (.333) with two RBI and three runs scored and went 1-0 with a save a 6.13 earned run average in eight innings pitched during her truncated junior season.

Dicion noted that during the unofficial winter season — between the JV and varsity seasons in the OIA calendar — Hernandez focused much of her efforts on pitching.

"She pitched most of our winter league and I know she was getting tired at times, but I told her to ‘suck it up and let them hit the ball and let your defense work, but at the same time, work your pitches and try not to pitch it down the middle,' " Dicion said.

He went on to explain that with the number of different pitches that Hernandez has in her repertoire, location is somewhat secondary to variation.

"During the winter league she tried different pitches and if it's working she'll stick to that, if it's not then she will change it up, but she has six different pitches, which she always had but she just didn't really grasp it real good until she got older and then that's when she realized, ‘Yeah, I can do it with hard work and trusting my release and trusting my movement and the calls," Dicion said.

Hernandez has worked in tandem with her fellow-senior, catcher Aliyah Crowley, behind the plate. Crowley has called the pitches in most games this season, Dicion disclosed.

"She knows Anela real well and she knows her pitches real well," he said.

The Bulldogs had allowed only nine runs in their four wins prior to a 16-6 defeat at the hands of Waipahu on the final weekend of March, which ended a string of three consecutive victories since an 8-4 loss to Aiea.

"That was a tough loss to Waipahu and it was just one bad inning that Waipahu scored twelve runs and our defense was trying to do things we never did in practice — that's the reason why they scored twelve runs — and our girls couldn't bounce back after that," Dicion said.

But Waialua bounced back with a 17-9 win over Kalaheo last Thursday, in which Dicion opted to start mostly reserves.

"The starters played a lot of our games so far so we played our second- and third-stringers and the only starters were Anela and Crowley, the pitcher and catcher, but that game everybody played," he said.

Sixteen of the 19 players listed on the team roster played against Kalaheo. The regular starters — outside of Hernandez and Crowley — each got one at-bat and then the spot starters re-entered the contest in their place, Dicion said.

"It wasn't like we wanted revenge because we lost to Waipahu, but instead of burning out the starters, let them rest and I would have done the same against McKinley Saturday, which they forfeited," he added.

Hernandez recorded a complete game with eight strikeouts and two walks. She allowed seven hits and eight of the nine runs she was charged with were unearned, a result of eight Waialua errors.

"Stats are good, but I keep telling her ‘Don't worry about stats because you've got teammates who haven't played before, so let's get them reps, feed them the ball so our defense can work.' They're gonna hit the ball, which is good because it's work for my defense and I want that ball put in play and I'd like for the other team to score because we don't just want to blow people out. I try to make this game fun for both sides," Dicion said. "Not just our side, but the other team as well."

That was the approach that he carried throughout the Kalaheo game Thursday.

"I told her that she's probably gonna have to slow her ball down to make it break and that's how Kalaheo was in the game, but for me, I rather have her pitch one whole game than just play five innings and that way I can have my second string, third string play, too," Dicion said. "Half my team hasn't played softball before, so we try to play more than five innings and with Anela trying her different pitches and different speeds that works out well."

In addition to her work in the circle, Hernandez also produced at the plate with an RBI-double — one of 14 hits the Bulldogs rapped out against the Mustangs. Hernandez also walked twice and scored as many times.

She has hit safely through the first seven games of the season and is 10 for 26 (.438) at the plate with seven RBI and 10 runs scored. Hernandez has been just as good in the circle, where she has quietly put together a 3-1 record and a 2.13 ERA; She has posted 16 strikeouts against eight walks and allowed 20 hits in 23.0 innings pitched.

Like her play on the diamond, Hernandez's personality is anything but brash.

"She's real quiet, very humble, soft-spoken, but when her bat is on, when her pitches are on … she's silent but deadly," Dicion remarked. "She's not a vocal person. She's more quiet, but she gets the message through to the younger girls as well, but not in a loud way."

Hernandez and the Bulldogs (6-3) fell short against first-place Nanakuli, the No. 9 team in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, by a score of 10-9 Tuesday afternoon. They will host Aiea (7-2) Saturday at 10 a.m.
