WAIPIO — The Pearl City baseball team is starting to make it a habit of thriving in the clutch.

Eli Oshiro threw 10 strikeouts in five innings and closer Devin Hayashi got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to help the ninth-ranked Chargers down No. 8 Campbell, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

Pearl City stranded 10 runners in the win as it improved to 4-0 atop the OIA Division-I West standings while the Sabers suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 3-1.

It was the Chargers' third straight win that was decided by two runs or less. One week ago Pearl City outlasted Aiea in a nine-inning marathon for a 6-4 win in a primetime night game on TV. In their previous game against Mililani last Saturday, the Chargers rallied from an early deficit and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 win.

Pearl City assistant coach Eric Boyles expected nothing different against Campbell on Wednesday.

"We knew this one was going to be a tight one, so we were prepared," said Boyles. "The boys did an awesome job."

Hayashi, who earned pitching wins in relief the past three games, relished the opportunity to perform in these tight situations.

"The lights, the camera, the buildup and the pressure, it's exciting," said Hayashi.

Both Oshiro and Hayashi delivered on the mound against the Sabers. The final out in each of the first five innings was a result of a Oshiro strikeout and Hayashi had back-to-back strikeouts to end the sixth inning with two Campbell runners on and helped end the seventh-inning threat with a 1-2-3 double play.

Hayashi, who earned his first save of the season, spoke highly of Oshiro after the game.

"That man is probably one of the clutchest pitchers I've ever known. I know he can get out of any type of situation and I love it."

The Chargers scored first in the top of the third inning thanks to timely back-to-back doubles by Eliaz Duropan and three-hole hitter Dacoda Agoto, who had a two-run RBI to put Pearl City ahead, 2-0.

It was the first hit of the season for Duropan, who was limited by a groin injury early in the year.

"That kid was due," Boyles said of Duropan. "He started off a little rough, but we stuck with him and kept him in the two-spot and we knew that he was eventually going to come through."

Boyles added that Agoto was in a similar slump with no hits in the previous two games and noted that the Chargers' home field is still under renovation so batting practice has been limited.

"He's our hitter, we rely on him," said Boyles. "It was just a matter of time before he starts producing like that."

The Sabers manufactured a run in the bottom of the same inning thanks to a stolen base by Kayne Carlos and a RBI single by Jayden Flores, but couldn't cash in on any other opportunities against the strong pitching of Oshiro and Hayashi.

Oshiro and Hayashi also supported their pitching performances with a hit apiece at the plate. Hayashi's hit came in the top of the sixth, which led to an insurance run when pinch hitter Ranson Aquino drove him home.

Xavier Streadback was tagged with the pitching loss for Campbell. Deion Jones came in for relief for him after the fourth inning while Kamanui Saito finished the game on the mound to help pick up the final four outs.
