FINAL  1   2   3   4   5
KAIS (10-5) 22 25 22 25 13 2
ROOS (12-4) 25 19 25 20 15 3

Roosevelt managed to turn back Kaiser in a game that went the distance at Roosevelt High School Gym on Tuesday. The scores were 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25, and 15-13.

The Rough Riders were led by Jordan Kan"s 15 kills and a team-high five of Roosevelt"s nine aces. Paul Shin and Danny Lieu ran the assists show as both combined for 38 of Roosevelt"s 41 assists (Shin 11, Lieu 27).

Seth Harman led the way for Kaiser with 11 kills and three aces. Mihael Stromsdorfer logged a team high five aces, and he accounted for 33 of Kaiser"s 36 assists.

The first set was an evenly matched chess match with Roosevelt ultimately winning over Kaiser. Roosevelt was the first to go on a significant run early as they used a 6-1 run to pull a 9-4 lead. From that point on, both the Cougars and Rough Riders went blow for blow, as neither team went on another significant run after that.

Both teams traded points back and forth with neither exchanging three straight or more. A net violation by Kaiser ultimately gave the first set to Roosevelt 25-22.

In set two, Kaiser burst out of the gate first and managed to lead wire-to-wire. Roosevelt still kept Kaiser in striking distance, but plenty of mistakes rose up like whack-a-moles to prevent Roosevelt from taking the lead. The Cougars enjoyed as much as a nine point lead when the Rough Riders made a push.

Roosevelt used a 6-3 run, which included an ace from Jonathan Yadao to chop the deficit to four 17-13. Kaiser, however, responded back immediately and threw more monkey wrenches into Roosevelt"s plans for a clean sweep.

Kaiser ultimately locked up set two by outscoring Roosevelt 8-6 to win it 25-19. That included an ace from Evan Matsunaga. A net violation from Roosevelt gave Kaiser the set two victory and a 1-1 tie at halftime.

The Rough Riders came into set three with revenge on their minds. They proved it by immediately going on a 4-1 run right out of the gate. The Cougars did not back down though.

Kaiser turned things into another chess match after Roosevelt took the next three points, including an ace from Joey Kawahakui. Kaiser eventually tied things up at 17 apiece via a Harman ace, but Roosevelt was not planning to lose set three.

The Rough Riders outscored the Cougars 8-5 to take set three 25-22, including an ace from Justin Toyama.

In set four, it was another chess match. Kaiser and Roosevelt went blow-for-blow again. When it was tied at eight, Kaiser used a 5-0 run to surge ahead, which included back-to-back Harman aces. Roosevelt did not give up though.

The Rough Riders found a rhythm and ultimately tied the score on four occasions. When it was tied at 17, the Cougars surged ahead by scoring the next four points. Ultimately, numerous mistakes were made by the Rough Riders, and the Cougars managed to take set four 25-20 after a Stromsdorfer kill.

"I definitely do feel we could have closed it in three," Kan said.

In the fifth and final set, Roosevelt took the first two points, but Kaiser responded right away, and the chess match continued. Kaiser and Roosevelt eventually exchanged three ties at eight, nine, and 10 respectively.

The 10-10 tie was the start of four straight points for Roosevelt. Kaiser made a final push, but Kan delivered the winning kill for Roosevelt to take set five 15-13.

"We have a lot to clean up on and this game really helped us see what we need to improve on," Kan said. "We gotta cut down on service errors as well."

Roosevelt remains perfect at 4-0 overall and in the OIA. They now head on the road to take on the Kalaheo Mustangs on Thursday, Mar. 24 at 6 p.m. HST.

Kaiser dropped to 3-1 in the OIA. They have a quick turnaround, too, as they go on the road to take on the Kalani Falcons on Thursday, Mar. 24 at 5 p.m. HST.
