'Fab Four' goes out on top for three-time champion Warriors

Back in the 1920's, the University of Notre Dame's football team featured ‘The Four Horsemen.'

Roughly a century later, it was 'The Fab Four' who played a prominent role in the success of the Kamehameha girls soccer team, which culminated its season with a third straight Division I state championship with its win over Punahou in penalty kicks Saturday night.

The Warriors finished the season with an 11-1 overall record and their 11th state title in program history.

"It feels real good," said Kamehameha coach Missy Moore, whose team won its final seven games of the season.

The quartet that make-up The Fab Four are Leila Kahoano, Anuhea Aluli, Sienna Inouye and Charis Marie "Alohi" Ramos. All four players have been on the team since they were freshmen.

"There's four of us that have been there since the beginning and this is our senior year now," Kahoano said. "It was just the four of us since freshman year and we were together sophomore year, junior year and now this year, of course, so we call ourselves ‘The Fab Four.' "

Kahoano is a midfielder, who has scored five goals on the year, while Aluli leads the team with seven goals scored from her striker position. Inouye and Ramos are defenders for the Warriors.

The foursome have been together for three Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships. Kamehameha is 9-0 in state-tournament games with them on the roster.

Anything less than perfection would not have satiated the palate of The Fab Four.

"It was our mission to get this dub and to actually have done it, I'm so proud and honored to have this accomplishment," Kahoano said. "It feels good to leave this campus and this place with a win."

Kahoano showed some grit after she returned from an injury that caused her to miss 26 minutes of match time in the first half.

She eventually put away the final penalty kick for the Warriors, who edged the Buffanblu, 3-1 in the shootout, after 100 scoreless minutes of play.

"You know, I couldn't have done it by myself," said a gracious Kahoano. "It was all because of my sisters by my side and this team that I have on my back. They just mentally pushed me to keep going and when it was time for me to take initiative to take a PK, I had the most confidence going in because I had the best people having my back."

While there were certainly moments of trepidation throughout the match for Kahoano and her teammates, at the end of the night they successfully defended their state championship.

It was, as she says, a matter of faith.

"I think we just knew what the plan was and we just had God on our side. We always pray before games and we play about 300 percent — and that's talking about mind, body, spirit and a hundred percent in each — and we just went in with Ke Akua and we just took him by our side and that's what eventually gave us the win," said Kahoano, who is signed with the University of San Diego.

Aluli will attend Oakland University (Michigan), Inouye will play for Webster University (Missouri) and Ramos has signed with South Dakota State University.

Among those who expressed their appreciation for The Fab Four was junior goalkeeper Marley Roe, who was one of five Warriors selected to the All-Tournament Team.

"The Fab Four has always taken me in as if I'm in their grade. They've been like my best friends since middle school and being able to win for them was probably the best part tonight," said an emotional Roe. "That was awesome for them to get their last win."

Kahoano and Ramos earned All-Tournament Team honors along with junior Kainani Jacang and Aluli, who was tabbed as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
