KALAEPOHAKU—Top-ranked Saint Louis broke open the second quarter and dominated the third to thump No. 2 Iolani, 60-43, to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I championship for the first time since 2000 at the Clarence T. C. Ching Athletic Center Saturday.

"It was a good team win against a really good, hot team. It was back and forth and the boys hung in there and really wanted it. You can tell with the 50-50 balls, we were able to get those. Typical ILH basketball and both teams were going at it. We were fortunate to hit some tough shots and controlled the boards and that was our recipe," Saint Louis coach Dan Hale said.

The Crusaders (11-2) won the regular season and had the bye until the postseason final. Saint Louis drew the Heide & Cook/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships top seed and will get a first round bye and will face the winner of Kamehameha-Hawaii/Kahuku.

"It was amazing. I ain't going to lie. It was weird to sit there watch, but it was nice to tighten up on some things and focus on some of the things. Literally your schedule is that you play a game and you prepare for the next game. It was a nice chance for us to tighten things up and work on some things," Hale said.

Iolani (10-4) hosts the Roosevelt in the opening round on Monday, Feb. 21.

Aiva Arquette led all scorers with a double-double 19 points, 10 rebounds, five steals.

AJ Bianco added 16 points, four assists, and three steals and Shoncin Revuelto had nine points, two assists and three steals to help the Crusaders sweep the season series against the Raiders.

"Coach preached all week, we have to know who we are. We are an inside team, we got big bodies and just taking advantages of mismatches, just running up and down the court with our athleticism," Bianco said.

JJ Manadaquit, who leads Iolani with 15.4 points per game, was held to 11 points and Bailey Bumanglag scored all nine of his points from the 3-point line.

Cole Schmidt defended and chased around Mandaquit to make things difficult for him all game. He also blocked two of Mandaquit's attempts.

"I cannot say enough about Cole. He's that silent guy that people don't notice and he's not in the box score a lot. He brings tremendous defense and he's a veteran and knows what he does well. He had some fantastic plays tonight," Hale said of Schmidt.

The Raiders pulled within three to close the first quarter following Aaron Claytor's 3-point play but trailed, 17-14.

Bianco found Shoncin near the block to open the second quarter and Bianco followed up with two in the paint. He found Arquette to make it, 23-14. Shoncin nailed a 3-pointer in the left corner and Bianco added a steal and lay up to complete an 11-0 run.

"I thought it was great," Bianco said when asked about ball movement. "I thought everyone was unselfish and when we play unselfish ball, that's our best ball and we have to keep that going."

"We picked up the tempo. It's been what we were working on. They're terrific shooters. We worked on rotating and trying to get the ball out of their hands. That's what the traps were about," Hale said.

Mandaquit's drive at the 1:44 broke the Saint Louis scoring run for Iolani's only points of the quarter as the Crusaders led, 28-16 at halftime.

Arquette opened up the quarter with a steal and and was fouled as he made the layup. The Raiders were able to get within 10 off Bumanglag's 3-pointer but could not get any closer as Saint Louis answered with a 12-0 run to go up by as much as 23.

"We take pride in our defense. Defense wins championships. We had a great defensive game plan especially against JJ and Aaron, their main ball handlers. We were aggressive, communicated well, and executed at a high level," Bianco said.

"Our main goal was to shut down JJ and Aaron," Shoncin added. "They are their two main guys and I felt we did a great job tonight and how we came out with a win tonight. We helped on them, but made sure to get out on other shooters, we don't want to leave them open for wide-open shots."

Hayden Bayudan scored six of his seven points in the quarter and his baseline drive gave Saint Louis a commanding 47-26 lead going into the fourth.

Saint Louis' largest lead was 24 earlier in the fourth quarter, but Iolani managed to outscore the Crusaders, 17 to 13 in the final period. The Raiders and Crusaders emptied their benches and Iolani managed to get the deficit down to 14 late in the game.

"It was about staying focused. Coach Dan emphasized to grind this game and keep going. Play defense and make them pay on defense too," Shoncin said.

The Crusaders won the regular season matchups, 47-39 on Jan. 18 and 44-37 on Jan. 27.

Iolani was seeking its first ILH title since 2016.
