MILILANI — Ethan Senter scored one goal and assisted on another to lead No. 6 Kalani to a 3-0 win over Pearl City in the quarterfinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I boys soccer tournament Tuesday night.

A crowd of about 250 fans at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium saw the Falcons (9-1-1) shut out the Chargers (8-3-1) to clinch a state tournament berth and move on to Thursday's OIA semifinals.

Kalani, the second seed out of the Eastern Division, will play West top seed and top-ranked Mililani at 7 p.m. at Kapolei's Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex.

The Falcons got a much-needed clean sheet defensively after they allowed seven goals in their last two games, including a stunning 4-3 loss to Kahuku to end the regular season on Feb. 5.

"Well, we learned from our mistakes and how the opponent just scored on us on those times that we lost focus, so that was a good experience moving forward," Kalani first-year coach Keach Mizuno said. "Instead of just having a negative effect and just staying there, we just moved forward from there, so in a way it's good that it happened during the season so then we can learn from it and go on through the rest of OIAs and states."

Senter, a junior forward and attacking midfielder, said the result was just what the Kalani defense needed heading into the rest of the playoffs.

"It's been good for our defense. From the start we've been starting really slow and it's been hard transitioning to a new coach and I think the progress that we've made coming into this everyone has stepped up, especially our defense," Senter said.

Senter and the Falcons were well aware of what was at stake Tuesday night.

"We knew that this game gets us into states and we really needed to win this game and defense was on lockdown, everyone was playing well and we did our jobs," he said.

A Pearl City miscue led to the game's first goal. Kalani's Kenzo Taylor intercepted a poorly-played pass from a Charger defender and passed it ahead to Senter, who took a touch before he slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the goal and just out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

"I think it's just the Kalani way, you know? Full pressure, everyone stepped up, we did well, got them off a bad bounce and Kenzo was able to counter, get me the ball while I'm going in and I just put it away," Senter said of his eighth goal this year. "The ‘keeper wasn't expecting it because he came out and all in all, it was good."

About five minutes after Senter scored, he set-up another. A foul against the Chargers gave the Falcons a direct free kick from about 15 yards away on the left side of the pitch. Senter fired a right-footed shot that stayed low and was deflected with two hands by goalie Zyris Valencia. However, Valencia was unable to secure the ball and it ricocheted out of his hands and off the left post before Taiki Kobayashi's slid in to poke it into the goal.

"So we've been working on a lot of set pieces. Right now, Maka (Monaghan) is our number one, but I've been taking number two and our coach really wants me to take it," Senter said. "I was aiming for front post — because we've been practicing that — and everyone crashes that front post side, Taiki was able to get a rebound and put it away for us."

Pearl City registered its first shot on goal in the 25th minute. Chase Kaetsu ripped a low, driving shot from the left side, but it was saved by Kalani's Kaito Pruner, who tallied three saves on the night.

The Falcons looked to add to their lead just a minute later, but Monaghan's direct free kick from about 16 yards out hit the crossbar.

The Chargers had another quality scoring chance in the 51st minute, when Raine Fujimura restarted play with a service from about 30 yards out to the front post, where Kaetsu was able to connect with his pass, but unable to redirect it onto frame.

Fujimura had a shot on goal in the 69th minute, off of another set piece. A foul against the Falcons gave him a direct free kick from about 35 yards out, but his right-footed shot went over a four-man wall and was saved by Pruner.

Kalani added an insurance score late on Yamato Okumura's goal in the 75th minute.

The Falcons finished with seven shots on goal to three for the West third-seeded Chargers, who did not attempt a single corner kick.

Valencia recorded two saves in goal for Pearl City, which will play host to Kahuku at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bino Neves Stadium.

Scott, Martin power No. 1 Mililani past Kahuku, 5-0

Max Scott and Kai Martin scored two goals apiece to help top-ranked Mililani power past Kahuku, 5-0, in the late quarterfinal at Kauinana Stadium Tuesday night.

The West top-seeded Trojans (11-0) led 4-0 by halftime en route to their eight consecutive shutout to secure a spot in Thursday's semifinal round.

Scott, a senior forward, opened the scoring in the ninth minute and was followed by junior midfielder Keegan McGehee, who scored in the 14th minute. Martin, a sophomore forward, converted a penalty kick in the 26th minute and Scott capped his team's first-half scoring with his second goal of the match in the 35th minute. Martin closed out the scoring with his goal in the 45th minute.

Mililani had a first-round bye Monday, while Kahuku was coming off of a 2-1 win in overtime against Campbell.

The Red Raiders (8-4), who are seeded fourth out of the East, can secure a state tournament berth with a win over Pearl City on Wednesday.
