KAPOLEI — Cheyenne Mattos scored in the 89th minute and No. 8 Campbell came away with a 2-1 win over No. 5 Moanalua in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls soccer tournament semifinal match at Kapolei's Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex Thursday night.

The Sabers (10-1-1) overcame a brief one-goal deficit to rally past Na Menehune (9-1-1) and into Saturday night's championship final, where they will play No. 3 Mililani (12-0).

Mattos scored the golden goal in the ninth minute of the first overtime period after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through 80 minutes of regulation.

A Moanalua foul gave Campbell a free kick from about 30 yards out near the left sideline. Jaylee Curran took the kick and served it into the box. It eventually found the right foot of Mattos, who put it away into the right side of the goal to send her team to its first OIA title game since 2015, when it won its only D1 crown and one of just two league championships in program history.

"I looked at the area and I knew that was in Jaylee's range, that she could always hit that ball in the back post, so I had her take it and I saw the Moanalua players stepping up so I moved in line with their wall but I stayed back a little bit more so I wouldn't be offsides but when I saw her kick it, I tried to judge it and I just ran hard for the ball hoping I could get a goal," said Mattos, a senior midfielder.

It was her team-leading ninth goal of the year.

"We pulled out all their defenders and created space for our player to run in on a touch and it was some sort of collision and sometimes the ball drops in front of your feet and things go your way, so I think it just came our way this time around," Campbell coach James Curran said.

Curran was especially pleased for Mattos, who was sidelines for a 10-minute stretch in the first half with some knee discomfort.

"Something went down so she was able to get back out and muscled through and I'm happy for her because she deserves it," he said. "She's been carrying the load here."

Mattos said she wasn't sure what led to the discomfort in her knee, but she wasn't about to let it keep her off the pitch.

"I had a little pain in my knee," she said. "I'm not sure what happened, but I know I just really wanted to win so I just ran through the pain."

Neither team was able to muster a goal through 60-plus minutes of play, but the action picked up considerably soon thereafter.

Moanalua's Maleah Kanayama gave her team the lead in the 63rd minute with her goal off a right-footed shot from about 25 yards out. However, Campbell equalized just two minutes later on a Kaelyn Jaentsch goal

"It started to pick up," Mattos said of the final 25-plus minutes of the match. "I feel like after we got scored on, we were like, ‘Oh, we know we gotta get a goal. We gotta go, we gotta go,' so I think that's when we started to pick up the intensity a lot more, but I think throughout the whole game our intensity was up high and we did really good."

Curran said while the pace of play increased, he urged his players to remain even-keel.

"Well usually at about that time — especially when teams are just clearing balls — it gets kind of whacky, so I mean, fifty-fifty balls, bodies flying all over the place, you know, like I told the girls at every little break we had, was just, ‘calm your mind down and play soccer.' I think the pressure was kind of getting to their heads and that's all they had to do was slow the game down mentally," he expressed.

Na Menehune nearly won it just a minute into overtime after the Sabers were whistled for a foul. The ensuing restart — a direct free kick by Jeslyn Vallesteros from about 35 yards — hit the crossbar. They registered two more shots on goal in the 87th and 88th minutes, respectively, by Elana Melton and Sierra May Sandobal, but Campbell goalie Kelli Canella saved both shots.

Cannella tallied six saves in goal.

Moanalua, which went into double-overtime in its 1-0 win over Waipahu in Tuesday's quarterfinal round, had nine shots on goal to six for Campbell.

The Sabers now turn their sights on undefeated Mililani, which has outscored its two opponents in OIA tournament play, 10 to zero.

"Mililani, they're a powerhouse team right now," Curran said. "They got a lot of personnel, they're a solid, well-rounded team so it's gonna be a challenge, but we're gonna come to the fight, like usual."

Campbell, the second seed out of the Western Division, has won its last three games since a 3-1 loss to the Trojans on Jan. 28 during the regular season.

"It feels really good knowing that all our hard work is starting to pay off and we're really hungry for the win, so it feels really good to be able to make it (to the final) and it's my first time, too," Mattos said.

The rematch between the Sabers and the Trojans will take place Saturday night at Kapolei and will follow the D2 final between Kalaheo and Leilehua at 5 p.m.

Moanalua, the East top seed, will play Pearl City Friday for third place at 7:15 p.m. at Waipahu Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex.
