Maryknoll got its quest for a three-peat started on the winning track, battling past Punahou in a nail biter, 52-50.

Logan Dias led all scorers with 16 points, including the go-ahead basket with just over a minute left in regulation, and grabbed nine rebounds, also a game-high.

"The gameplan was just to not get ahead of ourselves, take it one basket at a time," said Dias. "Everyone played well, everyone contributed and we're just happy to get the win."

Punahou actually led 26-17 at the break, after outscoring the home team 14-4 in the second quarter, but Maryknoll steadily chipped away at the margin.

It was a wild finish to a back-and-forth contest, that began when Zach Shapira was hacked on a drive to the hoop with 0:51 seconds left. Shapira made one of two free throws to get the Buffanblu to within a point.

Then, with 38 ticks in regulation Jaren Kaneshiro was fouled near the top of the circle, and made the first attempt to put the home team back up by two at 52-50 but the second attempt rimmed out to give Punahou a chance to take the lead or tie on the ensuing possession.

Maryknoll stood its ground defensively, forcing the game clock down to 15 seconds before forcing a timeout by Punahou. Coming out of the timeout, Shapira got a decent look at a three from the right wing, but the shot went wide right and out of bounds with just 2.2 seconds to play.

"Defensively it was switch everything. Once they got the ball it was just stick to the gameplan I guess," remarked Dias.

Micah Sakamoto was fouled on the inbounds with one second left and missed the first of two shots before being called for a lane violation on the second attempt, giving Punahou a sliver of hope with the ball out of bounds with a single tick still on the clock.

That inbounds throw was deflected by a Maryknoll player out of bounds and three-tenths of second was placed back on the clock, giving the Buffanblu a last gasp play on the near sideline.

Drake Watanabe got the ball in his hands but could not release it in time to beat the buzzer, so the shot that glanced off the front of the rim would not have counted regardless.

Watanabe scored 11 points in the loss, but was saddled with foul trouble for much of the contest. His backcourt mate, Peyton Macapulay, had a nice all-around game chipping in eight points to go along with five assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Parker Grant also stuffed the stat sheet, with five points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Maryknoll also got contributions from Sakamoto (nine points, five boards), Justin Yap (eight points, two three-pointers) and Daniel Jones (four points, six boards).

"Their team is really tough, they play really hard. We know each other so there's banter between us but we just stuck to our play and didn't give up until the end," said Dias.
