HAWAII KAI—No. 14 Kaiser rallied from a three-point halftime deficit and scored 38-unanswered points in the second half to rout Radford, 52-17, at Kaiser Stadium to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II title for the first time since 2013.

The Cougars (9-0) are seeded second in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II Football State Championships and will take on third seed and Maui Interscholastic League Champion Kamehameha-Maui on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. at Farrington.

Kapaa, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion, was selected as the top seed and will take on fourth seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Hawaii Preparatory Academy at 3 p.m.

The Rams end their season with a 6-3 overall record.

Easton Yoshino passed for 272 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks. Kamakana Mahiko caught a game-high eight passes for 154 receiving yards and had a pick-six in the fourth quarter.

"He's my QB, I got to trust him, he has to trust me. During the game he started off cold, but we had a talk, we got out of our own heads and got it done," Mahiko said of Yoshino.

Justin Kanekoa added 134 yards on six catches and Hopo Aholelei added a pair of scores on the ground in the second half.

After Radford turned it over on downs, Kaiser struck first with a 10-play, 76 yard drive that culminated with a 8-yard touchdown pass from Yoshino to Donovan Reis.

The Rams answered after Syncere Dillard took the kick off 88 yards to tie the game at 7.

After the Cougars took advantage of a short field after a bad snap to the punter, Yoshino connected with Kanekoa for a 38-yard touchdown for a 14-7 lead.

Kalob Victorino-Avilla threw for 181 yards and his only touchdown pass went to Roch Schaefer, who hauled in five passes for 67 yards, and caught the pass off a deflection to tie the game at 14.

Kaiser had a chance to put more points on the board but a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kai Blackston was wiped out by an illegal-man-down- field penalty and turned it over on downs the next play.

Radford responded with a 15-play, 78-yard drive that started on their own 22 and Harrison Hoskins' 22-yard field goal as time expired gave the Rams a 17-14 lead at halftime.

"We have to focus and look at the score. I took that personal so I went on that field and wanted to score," Aholelei said of the second half.

Kaiser forced Radford to punt and Yoshino hooked up with Mahiko for 38 yards. Three plays later, Aholelei rushed for a 3-yard touchdown but the kick was blocked for a 20-17 lead in the third quarter.

"That was a new package we put into this game. I'm proud of Hopo because he did good and we just put him in that position, knowing he didn't play offense before. He did a great job today," Mahiko said of Aholelei.

The Cougars forced the Rams to go three-and-out again and on the first play from scrimmage, Blackston took a lateral from Yoshino and threw it to Kanekoa for a 37-yard gain. The trick play set up Aholelei's 1-yard run for a 26-17 lead.

"Coach said, ‘Run the ball'. That's what I did, I looked for the open space and got there," Aholelei said playing on offense. "Kai got that speed and me, it's the heavy package if we have two yards left."

Blaze Kodama had the first interception but Kaiser could not capitalize on the turnover and gave it back to Radford after turning it over on downs.

The Rams punted for a third straight possession and Kaiser scored in three plays after Yoshino found Mahiko for a 55-yard touchdown.

" We realized the safeties were coming over and double teaming. They watched film of course, because of last game. Throughout the game we had to learn, adjust and call audibles," Mahiko said.

Taye Debina forced a fumble and Noah Pacheco recovered it in Radford territory. Aholelei's third rushing touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty, but Kanekoa took the end-around for 20 yards for a 40-17 lead.

The Cougars poured it on with a pair of pick-sixes. Caleb Garcia returned the interception 47 yards and Mahiko followed up with a 35-yard interception return for the final scores of the night.

Caleb is a good player, he does his assignment. I'm proud of him. That was a big impact for us, because that sealed the game," Mahiko said.

Jack Carlson caught a team-high seven passes for 89 yards, Christian Payton rushed for 56 yards on 19 carries. Jabez Aloalii-Maanaima had two tackle for losses and Elijah Falaniko added a sack in the loss.

Kaiser won the regular season matchup on Nov. 5, 34-14.

Radford was seeking their first OIA Division II title and state tournament appearance since 2015, the same year they won the state title.
