SALT LAKE — Leilehua swept Kalaheo, 26-24, 25-13, 25-19 to win their first-ever Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II title at Moanalua's gymnasium Thursday night.

Trinity Tatupu led the way with 16 kills, 10 digs, four aces and Jamie Nena chipped in a double-double with 14 kills, 11 digs, and Maya Enanoria dished out 27 assists to help the Mules improve to 9-3 overall.

"It means a lot to the program and the girls. Anything is possible if they put their minds to it and set forth and do and it showed right here tonight. They came here ready to play," Leilehua coach Jeremiah Keola said.

"It feels amazing. Due to how COVID-19 impacted my sophomore year, we got something and I'm so happy right now," Tatupu said.

Both teams clinch spots in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II Girls Volleyball State Championships starting on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

"I'm excited, I want to win more. This is my first time to the state tournament," Nena said.

Leilehua led by as much as five in the first set, but Kalaheo (6-6 overall) closed the gap and scored off of errors. The Mustangs tied the game at 20 after the Mules were called for a double contact violation and took the lead for the first time in the set, 23-22 after a service error.

"It was nerves, being on TV and not wanting mess up anything. They didn't want to make any mistakes. They wanted to get out here and do the best they can. Once they got they got those jitters out, they woke up and it was hard for Kalaheo to stay with us. Props to Kalaheo, Ed (Chun) and his team, they fought a good fight, but I'm glad we brought it home," Keola said.

"It was jitters, our team is super young, we have three seniors. We didn't how it felt but until we got our groove back and our connection, it felt amazing," Tatupu added.

Faith Fujiwara landed a kill for a 24-23 Mustang lead, but Nena had back-to-back kills to regain the lead for the Mules and Lily Enanoria won the set, 26-24 with a kill off of Tatupu's assist.

"We started off really slow in the first set. It seems like we start off slow in the first set. Some of our serves were too hard, but that comes with the game. You have to shake it off and keep going. They woke up and the next two sets showed what they can do," Keola said.

Once the jitters were out, Leilehua was dominant the rest of the way.

The Mules jumped out to a commanding 11-4 lead in the second set after a block from Anniversary Filisi to force Kalaheo to call timeout. The Mustangs got within six twice, but the Mules dominated the rest of the way and went up by as much as 12.

Maya Enanoria passed out 11 assists in the set to get the Mules' attack going.

"Her passes are amazing," Tatupu said. "When I'm in the front row and she's in the back row, I don't doubt her. I know she will be there."

Momentum from the second set carried over to the third set as the Mules galloped out a 9-1 lead. Kalaheo chipped away to get within five twice following Madison Millard's and Maile Seeger's kills.

"Once we got comfortable and knew our plays, it was easier for us to score more points," Nena said.

Tatupu took control with a kill and her fourth ace and Nena added a kill to put Leilehua up eight.

"She's only a junior, I told her in the beginning of the year that this is your team. This is you. You have to be that leader. She stepped up and what a leader needs to do. Jamie did an awesome job too," Keola said.

The Mustangs mounted a comeback with a 4-1 run to get within five off of Jazzahlei Satele's kill. The Mules got a kill from Filisi and won the match after a service error.

Kalaheo was seeking its first league title since 2014.

Satele led the Mustangs with seven kills, eight digs, Seeger had 11 digs and a block assist, Millard had three blocks, and Shae Hazzard passed out 13 assists in defeat.
