KAPOLEI — Chauncee Lopez ran for three touchdowns and No. 5 Campbell puts the clamps on defensively in a 36-3 throttling of No. 7 Kapolei Saturday night.

A crowd of about 600 fans at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex saw the Sabers rally from an early deficit with 36 unanswered points over the final three quarters to improve to 3-0.

The Hurricanes, who had nearly 20 players unavailable for the game due to COVID-19 protocols, were held to just 61 yards of total offense and fell to 1-3 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division standings.

"I'm just happy that we played good defense, to be honest," Campbell coach Darren Johnson said. "Real happy."

‘Good' might be an understatement. The Sabers racked up a dozen tackles for losses and a half-dozen sacks, with Kana Nelson accounting for three TFLs and two sacks on his own.

"Our defense, I'm so proud of my defense. We work so hard and I'm definitely proud of them," said cornerback Carson Murakami, who had a pair of second-half interceptions off of Kapolei quarterback Esaiah Gideon.

Gideon started in place of Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa, who was among the contingent of Hurricanes out for the contest. He finished 7-of-15 passing for 88 yards and three interceptions.

Campbell got five takeaways from its defense and recycled them into 28 points. Lopez's first touchdown, from four yards out, came three plays after a Kapolei fumble that was recovered by T'nias Tavale at the ‘Canes 5-yard line.

After halftime the Sabers cashed in three more times on Kapolei turnovers. Murakami's first pick led to Rowen-Ray Bucao's diving 10-yard touchdown catch from Chayne Kuboyama-Hayashi. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lopez punched it in from a yard out four plays after Diego Betancourt's recovery of a fumble forced by teammate Kela Moore.

Murakami's second pick led to a 4-yard TD run by Lopez to close out the scoring with 6:34 left to play.

"They did a superb job," Johnson said of his defense. "My hats off to them because they created turnovers for us to score easy and they make it possible to win and for the points to come easy."

Kapolei's offense averaged a meager 1.4 yards per play and ran just 43 plays from scrimmage. It ran the ball 28 times for minus-27 yards and was 0 for 10 on third-down conversions.

"We were just gaining more momentum with each turnover and score," Murakami said. "Everyone was just pursuing to the ball and that's what we practiced and worked on all week and I'm glad it paid off."

The Hurricanes actually had a fortuitous start to the game when they recovered a Campbell muffed return on the opening kickoff and got a 27-yard field goal by Hurley Kennedy out of it.

The Kapolei defense then came up with a couple takeaways of its own to halt the Sabers' first two possessions. Maika Kahele-Akeo recovered a Kuboyama-Hayashi fumble, but the ‘Canes offense went three-and-out and punted. Riley Camarillo then intercepted an under-thrown ball by Kuboyama-Hayashi on the fourth play of Campbell's next drive, but Gideon lost a fumble three plays later.

After it was shut out in the opening quarter, Campbell took its first lead on Lopez's 4-yard TD run four plays into the second stanza.

"We just had to pick up the pace, we had to get things going; I think we were getting mentally complacent," Lopez said.

Johnson said his team's slow start was partially due to a lack of possession early on, but also a lack of focus.

"(Kapolei) actually had the ball that whole first quarter, so we just needed to correct some mistakes, get rid of our penalties and play better football and not playing to the crowd, or not playing to nobody, but play our style and brand of football," he said.

Later in the second quarter, Kapolei punter Tryton Keliikipi had the snap sail over his head and result in a 29-yard loss. The Sabers started their ensuing possession at the ‘Canes 30 and stretched its lead with Kuboyama-Hayashi's 10-yard TD pass to Jonah Tofagau-Tavui on the final play of the first half.

The drive was kept alive after a personal foul against Kapolei for roughing the passer to negate an incomplete pass on fourth down. It was just one of the 15 penalties the Hurricanes were called for.

The teams were flagged a combined 27 times for 206 penalty yards.

Kuboyama-Hayashi was on the receiving end of a hard, but legal hit just after he released the ball on the TD pass to Tofagau-Tavui.

"He showed great effort fighting through adversity," Lopez said of Kuboyama-Hayashi, who finished with 163 yards on 12-of-27 passing. He was intercepted one and threw two TDs in the win, despite being sacked four times.

"Chayne took some big shots and we tell them we expect our quarterbacks to get hit, but they're not supposed to," Johnson said.

Kuboyama-Hayashi's second TD pass came on a screen pass to Bucao late in the third quarter and stretched his teams lead to 22-3 following the extra point by Calzzic Ili.

Lopez provided a pair of fourth-quarter TD runs for insurance and finished with 19 carries for 57 yards.

"We're proud of Chauncee because he was running with his shoulders square through the line of scrimmage and getting upfield," Johnson said.

Campbell ran 62 plays and had 243 yards of total offense. It was just 3 of 10 on third downs, but 5 of 6 on red zone scoring chances.

Betancourt had the other pick for Campbell's defense.

Andy Liaina had 12 total tackles to lead Kapolei defensively. Iosefa Tapeni tallied 2 1/2 of his team's five total sacks.

The Sabers' average starting field position was the Hurricanes' 49-yard line.

Campbell, which was coming off of a 39-0 win over Waianae last week, has now outscored its three opponents this season by a combined 113 to 9.

Kapolei was coming off of a 27-14 win over Farrington last week. In its three losses this year, it has been outscored 97 to 10.

The ‘Canes have a bye next week and will next play on Nov. 19, when they host Waianae (1-3).

The Sabers, one of three unbeaten teams remaining in the OIA's Open Division, will visit winless Leilehua (0-3) Saturday night.
