KAILUA -- Returning from a rare four-week October layoff, visiting 'Iolani still looked to be in sharp midseason form Saturday night in rolling past Kailua, 28-0, in nonleague football action.

Brody Bantolina rushed for 153 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries and added a 65-yard TD reception, and the Raiders defense came up with three turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble recovery) to help 'Iolani, ranked No. 9 in the state by ScoringLive, remain unbeaten at 7-0. The Surfriders, who suffered a key injury early and were plagued by two red-zone turnovers in the first half, fell to 0-2.

A vaccinated and masked crowd of about 500 at Alex Kane Stadium also watched quarterback Micah Ho'omanawanui complete 16 of 21 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns for 'Iolani, which last played on Oct. 1 in a home victory over Saint Louis (II).

"When you take that amount of time off, there's going to be some kinks, but we just practiced what we could and our coaches did what they could to prepare us," said Bantolina, a senior running back. "We were definitely anxious (this week). When you take a long break like that, you're gonna want to play, so we just came out and played with intensity."

The Raiders did not show many kinks early, forcing Kailua into a three-and-out after the opening kickoff and then marching 74 yards on 10 plays, culminating in Bantolina's 5-yard scoring run up the middle. Allison Chang's extra point made it 7-0 with 6:35 still to go in the first quarter.

After forcing another punt on the ensuing possession, Ho'omanawanui scrambled 11 yards for a third-down conversion, and then two plays later threw a screen pass to Bantolina in the right flat. Bantolina, who is listed at 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, weaved his way through some traffic upfield and then found a seam toward the left sideline and used a couple of key blocks to gallop to the end zone. Chang's PAT extended 'Iolani's lead to 14-0 with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter.

Making matters worse for Kailua, the Surfirders lost starting running back Ikaika Quidashay to a leg injury on the next series. But after punting and then forcing 'Iolani into a three-and-out, Kailua appeared to find some rhythm on offense and advanced the ball to the Raiders' 28-yard line. On the next play, however, quarterback Romeo Ortiz threw downfield and his pass was first knocked up and then intercepted by 'Iolani defensive back Bronson Morioka, who returned it about 74 yards down the left sideline to the Surfriders' 16. Four plays later, Ho'omanawanui found receiver Nela Taliauli in the left corner of the end zone and Chang's extra point made it 21-0 with 7:07 left in the second quarter.

"What this team does is they create turnovers, and it makes our offense's job a little easier with a short field," Raiders coach Wendell Look said.

'Iolani came up with another key red-zone turnover on Kailua's next drive, after the Surfriders got all the way down to the Raiders' 16 yard-line. On thrid-and-4, the ball came loose and was recovered by defensive back Braydon Morioka on the 13-yard line.

The 21-0 lead held until halftime, and in the first two quarters Ho'omanawanui completed 8 of 11 passes for 97 yards and two TD's, and Bantolina amassed 86 yards rushing on 16 carries.

"Coming off of that long layoff, we're happy that they got back in the groove and were able to keep going from where we left off," Look said.

Meanwhile, 'Iolani's defense held Kailua to only 15 yards rushing on 10 first-half carries, in addition to more than a few hard hits and solid tackles. And after allowing 127 passing yards in the first half, the Raiders gave up only 54 yards through the air in the final two quarters.

"I thought they played excellent again," Look said of his defensive unit. "We knew they were going to try and come out throwing the ball, and we had never really been tested (against the pass) except for that Saint Louis game, and this was a good test for us. We've got some work to do, we have some young kids on the outside and stuff. ... But our focus is to be good tacklers, because we're not going to overpower people. We've got to be sure tackling, and these guys have worked hard at it."

'Iolani's offense gave the defense a well-deserved rest midway through the third quarter, by putting together a clock-eating 15-play, 90-yard scoring drive capped by Ho'omanawanui's 26-yard TD pass to Keao Miyahira on fourth-and-19. Miyahira, a running back, found himself wide open down the left sideline and made the catch in the end zone, and Chang's fourth PAT made it 28-0 with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Kailua had one last scoring threat late in the fourth quarter, after marching 51 yards in 12 plays to the Raiders' 29, but on fourth-and-14, 'Iolani DB Hudson Della-Lucia picked off a pass in centerfield to preserve the shutout.

Ortiz finished 14 of 31 for 171 yards.
