KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — Devin Kahahawai's regular-season debut for the Kamehameha girls volleyball team was a successful one Wednesday night.

Fresh off of helping Team USA to a bronze medal at the FIVB U18 World Championships in Durango, Mexico, the 6-foot-3 senior put down a match-high 28 kills to lead the Warriors to a four-set win over visiting Iolani at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-17, 19-25, 25-23 and 25-22.

"It was awesome," Kahahawai said. I'm glad to be home with this team and this game, this was a good team win for us."

In addition to Kahahawai's 28-kill effort, Kamehameha also had Nadia Koanui record 10 kills and Adrianna Arquette added nine kills and nine block assists as it improved to 3-2 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings.

Coach Chris Blake's squad rebounded from being swept in their previous match, last Friday against Punahou.

"I think it's huge. Our league is really tough, just like all the leagues," Blake said. "The little adjustments that we have to do for us to be successful is key. We're still working through a lot of things — I would like to say it's still early in the season, we do have a long way to go — but Iolani is well coached and they put us into a lot of tough spots."

The Warriors seized control of the opening set, which was tied at 6 early on, with a 14-4 run that gave them a 20-10 cushion. The Raiders scored five of the next six points to get to within 21-15, but Adrianna Arquette's kill out of the middle, assisted by Sierra Scanlan, closed out set 1, 25-17.

The Raiders held a slim 16-14 lead in set 2 before they opened it up with a 5-0 run that included three consecutive kills from the left side by Anuhea Hauanio-Lore. They finished off the set with a Brooke Naniseni kill to win set 2, 25-19 and even the match at one set apiece.

Set 3 was a back-and-forth one with neither team scoring more than three consecutive points outside of a 4-0 Kamehameha run that turned a 17-15 deficit into a 19-17 advantage on an Arquette kill. However, Iolani forced ties at 22 and 23, the latter the result of a kill by middle Mari Lawton, off an assist by setter Mokihana Tufono.

But the Warriors got some stellar defense on the ensuing serve-receive from libero Payton Oliveira, who sprawled out for a well-placed pass to Scanlan. The senior setter found Kahahawai out of the back row with her set and the University of Texas-commit put it away to set-up set point.

"Her being a senior and one of our captains, when it comes down to end game, her composure and her ability to execute when it matters the most has been huge for us, so she did a great job for us when it mattered and then she was able to back it up with overall solid play throughout the match," Blake said of Oliveira. "She's huge, she's been huge for us."

Kamehameha's duo of Arquette and Marley Roe combined on a block of a Naniseni attack to win set 3 for their team, 25-23.

The teams traded runs in the fourth set. An ace by Baylee Goeas Galdeira capped a 6-1 run for the Warriors and gave them an 11-8 lead. The Raiders answered with a 7-3 run to pull ahead 16-14, including back-to-back hitting errors by Kahahawai.

But there was no timeout called by Blake. Instead, his team responded with a 5-0 run to storm ahead, 19-16.

Kahahawai said that it is a matter of trust, but trust that has been build over some time.

"I've played under coach for four years under him, six in this program and I think he knows that even if I make a mistake I won't let it get to me," she said. "In my head I'm like, ‘hey, I'm gonna swing again,' like you said, I had back-to-back swinging errors and I may have hit it out, but I'm gonna go for it — I'm not gonna tip it — so I think he just knows and trusts in me and I trust in myself that no matter what, I'm not gonna let them scare me or anything and just keep swinging."

Blake said that he was proud of the way that Kahahawai handled the adversity.

"The thing that we're really happy about with Devin is that through her maturity and what she can do, she's able to fire back and understand that when you're the one who they're gonna be keying after, that's going to happen, so for her, taking care of that business and getting out there and firing back and answering back was key for us," Blake explained.

Kahahawai's 27th kill gave her team match point at 24-20. Iolani fought off two match points to force a timeout by Blake, before Roe set-up Kahahawai, whose attack drew a touch off the Iolani block to close out the match.

"That was an awesome team win and I'm so proud of the girls," Kahahawai said.

"We did well in that first set, but we know they were gonna be able to play tough, which they did and then they came back in the second set and it was a battle in sets three and four, so we were happy," Blake said. "it was a good team win for us."

Roe, a junior setter and opposite, tallied 30 assists, three kills, two aces and one block assist.

"We're asking a lot out of her, because she's not only setting, but she's also playing some front row," Blake said.

Senior Sierra Scanlan, who also dabbles as an opposite hitter, recorded 20 assists, one kill and two aces.

"Both of our setters are doing an excellent job in execution of our game plan. Coach Uila Peaua has been doing a lot of great things with them and then getting to make sure that we're executing as best as we can is key and she's a big part of that," Blake added.

The Warriors registered eight service aces against just three service errors. They also totaled 10 team blocks against the Raiders' six. Tia Kapihe tallied six block assists and teamed with Arquette on a number of them.

Blake spoke highly of the sophomore duo.

"Last year, even though they were freshmen, it was their first real season and they were beginning to see what it's like and the strides that they have made from last year to now are huge. We have a long way to go with them, but for them, taking care of business on that side of the net helps us to be able to be a lot more blanked and disciplined," he described.

Hauanio-Lore led the way for Iolani with a team-high 18 kills. Naniseni added 13 kills and a block, Lawton tallied nine kills and three block assists and Ambri Hanohano chipped in with eight kills and a block assist. Setter Mokihana Tufono tallied 42 assists, two kills and four block assists.

"Every team that's in system is tough to beat and number 11 on that side, Moki, she's awesome and the way that she distributes, the way that she plays defense she makes that team go and she did a lot of great things in order to keep them in the match, but again, we're really stoked to end up where we did," Blake said.

Both teams were without a star hitter in senior Maui Robins (injury) for the Warriors and junior Senna Roberts-Navarro (illness) for the Raiders.

"Knowing that Maui was out, everyone did more than they usually do, which was awesome; it was really important for us," Kahahawai said. "Marley, Adrianna, everyone did awesome."

Robins sustained an ankle injury during a practice last week that prevented her from playing against Punahou Friday.

"She's progressing well, so we'll see how things go as we continue to move along," Blake said of Robins.

It was Kamehameha's second win over Iolani this season. It rallied to a four-set win in the first meeting, on Sept. 28. The teams are scheduled to meet again on Oct. 22 at Iolani.

"It was a great match and we're definitely going to have to figure out a way to get better the next tie we see ‘em and our next chance is tomorrow."

Both of the Raiders' losses have come against the Warriors. The teams are tied at 3-2 in the ILH standings, one game behind first-place Punahou (4-1).

Kamehameha continues league play at Mid-Pacific (0-5) Tuesday. Iolani will visit Punahou that same evening.
