ALA WAI—No. 12 Iolani jumped out to a 38-0 first-half lead en route to a 46-7 win over PAC-5 at Eddie Hamada Field on a windy Friday afternoon.

The Raiders improve to 2-0 in league play while the Wolfpack fall to 0-1 in their season debut.

"We've been saying, ‘Don't take anything for granted, just play your heart out.' You don't know what's going to happen. We saw it happen to other schools. It's all about being smart. We have to be careful who we hang out with, what we do, it's all about safety. Think about the team and others around you. We're trying to play a season," Iolani running back Brody Bantolina said.

Kena Heffernan, making his debut as head coach, was grateful for the opportunity to take the field after their season opener last week against Saint Louis II was canceled.

"We have a lot of things we need to develop. I tip my hat to Wendell and his coaching staff. They're good at coaching up their kids. Any mistakes I take responsibility for it. The kids we have, we have nothing to lose out there. 80 percent of the kids never played football before. For us to get some plays is a victory. Win or loss, as long as we do it together, it's a victory. You never know what will happen next week. Regardless of the score, the sideline was happy to play some football," Heffernan said.

Micah Hoomanawanui finished the afternoon with 124 yards on 9-of-13 passing, two touchdowns. He added a rushing touchdown late in the first quarter.

Allison Chang hit a 34-yard field goal at the 8:52 mark for the game's first score. Chang went 5-for-5 on PAT attempts.

After a short punt, the Raiders drove 43 yards capped by Hoomanawanui's 11-yard touchdown pass to Kai Preusser for a 10-0 lead.

Hoomanawanui flipped it to a sweeping Keao Miyahira, who took it 62 yards for a score on a drive that just took 20 seconds.

"The character the team has. Coach Look has preached to us from day one that we are not a rah rah team. We make the noise with our pads. Shout out to coach Look, he keeps us on track and in our place," Hoomanawanui said.

Ryan Tsuruda recovered a botched handoff on the Wolfpack 3 and two plays later, Hoomanawanui's 4-yard keeper made it, 24-0.

Following a 2-yard punt, Iolani took over on the PAC-5 19. Preusser caught an 11-yard pass and Torres' 8-yard run set up Brody Bantolina's 1-yard run for a 31-0 lead.

"It's all up front," Bantolina said, crediting his offensive line. "They work their butts off to block for me and the other running backs. They push on the line. I do what I can to find the holes, but it's all them."

Gifted with good field position on the PAC-5 22, the Raiders had a chance to pad the points but turned it over on downs at the 2:17 mark. Hudson Della-Lucia picked off Ezekiel Rodrigues and returned it to the Wolfpack 9. Iolani capitalized on the turnover with a 4-yard rushing touchdown from Cainen Torres for a 38-0 lead going into the half.

"The thing I wanted them to focus on halftime was to have fun and play for each other. They did that," Heffernan said of his team.

Iolani's defense held PAC-5 to 104 yards of net offense and four different Raiders recorded an interception.

"Our defense does their job. They work really, really hard. Last week we were up, 14-0 against Damien, Hudson (Della-Lucia) had a pick and almost took it to the house but it was called back. That was a big play, they were in the red zone and if they scored, they would've had the momentum," Hoomanawanui said.

Mason Mizuta recorded the third interception of the afternoon and returned it 40 yards to the Wolfpack 3 that set up Miyahira's 3-yard score. Stirling Sakashita turned a bad snap into a two-point run to make it, 46-0.

PAC-5's defense held on and forced Iolani to punt. The Wolfpack strung a offensive drive that started on their own 38. Neivyn Kahoopii rushed for a 36-yard gain, Chad Schmidt and Blade Kaululaau added 14 more yards on the ground and Joshua Arcayena got down to the Iolani 1 to set up Rodrigues' 1-yard keeper to get the Wolfpack on the scoreboard.

The two-way warrior, Arcayena finished with 32 net rushing yards and added a tackle for loss on defense.

"Josh is a hammer. He's a great kid in and outside of practice. He tries to make his teammates better. For him, he's one of the guys you can look forward to on both sides of the ball and he's one of the leaders," Heffernan said of Arcayena.

Schmidt had 51 kick return yards, Kaulalaau added a sack, and Kahoopii had a tackle-for-loss.

"Just for them to get out here is a win. Just being able for them to get out here and now they understand where to line up and they can't take themselves out of the game. For these kids who never played before, they can see the intricacies of why we are holding them to a higher standard," Heffernan said.

The Raiders are scheduled to face Kamehameha II at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 10. The Wolfpack face Damien at Saint Louis on Sept. 11 at 10 AM. Both teams are scheduled to meet again on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 pm.

Fans were not permitted at Kozuki Stadium.
