Through the lens: Glen Pascual

Maui-based photographer Glen Pascual has been a contributing photographer for ScoringLive since 2014 and a key cog in our coverage of games on the Valley Isle.

Here is a set of Glen's favorite captures from this 2019-20 sports year, and some commentary from him as to why each was selected.

Sunset at Sue Cooley Stadium

Nothing is as beautiful as watching a football game at Sue Cooley Stadium at Lahainaluna during the sunset. Usually, I am on the field getting shots of the Lunas players singing the Alma Mater, but on this wet and rainy occasion, I went up into the stands to the concession area to get a wide shot of the field and stadium during the sunset.

Josh Tihada and Judge Cardoza

I love this picture because it shows how much joy Josh Tihada has playing the game of football.  After scoring a touchdown to give the Lunas a two touchdown lead 31-17 in what had been a close game (tied 17-all in the third quarter), Josh extended a handshake to the official, Judge Joseph Cardoza, and later put his arm around his shoulder as they walked the ball back to three yard line for the extra point attempt. Loved the spontaneity of the moment and showed what a class act Josh TIhada is on the field.

Lahainaluna senior football players with their parents

Class of 2020 senior football players. The only class that can claim they were four-time state football Division champions (Josh Tihada and Tuipulotu Lai were the only four year varsity players).

Lahainaluna football group shot with the Division II championship trophy

I had to have a group shot of members of the Lahainaluna football team posing around the Division II Football State Championship trophy on the turf at Aloha Stadium.

Fireworks on Lahainaluna Road

The beauty of small-town living is that family, friends and townspeople can line up along Lahainaluna Road at 11:30 p.m. on short notice, and welcome home the four-time state champs with signs, cheers and aerial fireworks as they ride the buses up to the campus at the top of the road. Win or lose, Lahaina always welcomes home their football team with aloha.

Wrestling

This was taken during the Garner Ivey Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center (also known as the Maui Invitational Tournament). For the championship matches, they had a single mat at center court and set up lights. It was pretty cool. Pictured are Lahainaluna's Jesse Dudoit and Basil Othman from Benicia, California in the 145 pound division.

Girls soccer

Young, and small but determined. I included a shot of the girls soccer team even though they won only one game the entire season, it was the teams' first win in at least three years.

Girls basketball

With a very young squad (no seniors), and a couple of hungry and talented MIL teams looking to knock them off, the Lady Lunas basketball team shook off an early season loss that marked the end of an incredible MIL girls basketball winning streak at 164 and the loss of key players to injuries throughout the season, to capture their 16th consecutive league championship.

Boys soccer

I like this spontaneous shot of the team during the last home game. They started off the season with several close losses but managed to find their groove to end the season on a high note.

Boys basketball

Although they did not win the MIL this year, the boys basketball team was a close-knit group that fought and played hard for each other and their coaches. I like this picture because it symbolizes that. Senior Juztin Gaoiran with his senior "dunk," with a little boost from his friends.

Lahainaluna boys and girls wrestling team photo

This shot was taken at the conclusion of the MIL Wrestling Tournament when they announced the team winners, with the Lunas boys and girls team each claiming the MIL team championship. I don't believe either squad was favored to win it going into the season, but the youngsters on the team really came up big to make it a championship season.

Baseball

"Strike!" I love this shot of the Lunas' Nephi Hong ducking to avoid getting hit by a high and tight pitch, only to have the ball hit his bat for a foul ball strike.
