MAKIKI — Christian Academy rebounded from a lopsided-loss the previous day and rallied from 11 down in the fourh quarter to defeat St. Andrew's Schools, 32-30, in a dramatic Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division III regular season finale at Hawaiian Mission Academy's McKeague Hall Thursday.

The Patriots improved to 9-2 and will face Island Pacific Academy at Halawa District Park for their third game in three days.

The Pride, who routed Christian Academy yesterday, 46-29, dropped to 9-2. Christian Academy viewed Thursday's game with a clean slate.

"Yesterday they handed us a big loss. We didn't play the best of our game and we had a lot of turnovers and bad passes. St. Andrew's out rebounded us on their offensive side. Those were the three focus points we wanted to cover," Christian Academy coach Tracy Pagud said.

Hailey Gasmen converted an assist from Maya Reed and Amelia Levy drained a 3-pointer from the left corner to put St. Andrew's up, 28-17.

Hooliieasu Baptiste, who was averaging 11.8 points per game before the contest, scored a game-high 14 points.

"She's our juggernaut, she's our leader and captain. So she plays whatever out there we ask her to do if it's rebounding, defense," coach Pagud said of Baptiste.

Baptiste hit the first of three 3-pointers in the quarter to kickstart an 11-0 run to give the Patriots life as Christian Academy outscored St. Andrew's in the final stanza, 15 to seven.

"We had to change our game plan and put pressure on defense. We had to knock down 3-point shots. St. Andrew's played a heck of a defense with a 1-2-2 zone. We were having a hard time getting shots in the middle," coach Pagud said.

Kierstyn Valenzuela hit a baseline jumper and freshman Kyra Pagud hit two 3's to bring the Patriots within two and her second triple banked off the glass to give Christian Academy a 29-28 lead.

"She's a freshman and has no fear. She wants to win and compete. The three points is what we wanted and she took it and luckily it went in," coach Pagud said of his daughter Kyra.

Kyra Pagud, the second leading scorer on the team with 10.8 points, finished with eight points.

"It was pretty big. I didn't do it for me, I did it for my team," Kyra said.

"Those were unexpected, we all didn't think she would make the second one, but she banked it in and we'll take it," Baptiste said.

Gasmen answered with a bank shot of her own to give the lead back to the Pride. Hevani Malohi missed the first of a one-and-one free throws. With 16.0 seconds remaining, Christian Academy's Joy Luna converted two double bonus foul shots for a 31-30 lead.

"We were down by seven with less than two minutes left I think, but I trust my team and they'll keep fighting until the very end no matter what," Baptiste said.

"We knew we couldn't foul so we had to play more aggressive and stop ball and get in front and have more anticipation," Kyra Pagud said of focusing on defense down the stretch.

Olivia Reed's potential-tying shot was no good as Christianne Canoneo got the rebound and was fouled. She made both free throws with 6.4 seconds left and Baptiste blocked Amanda Lee's shot at the end to preserve the victory.

"She knew she couldn't reach over and get a foul and that's the experience of being a senior," coach Pagud said of Baptiste's clutch play.

"It's really nerve wracking at the very end and if they get a shot at the last moment we wouldn't be able to get it back. I think at the end we really clamped down on defense because we knew we had to pull it out," Baptiste said of the final play.

Both teams got off to a slow start before the Pride started pulling away in the second quarter. St. Andrew's held a 12-7 lead after a free throw from Catherine Mount and Maya Reed had a put back off a miss to give the Pride a 14-7 lead at halftime.

Christian Academy got within three following a layup from Kyra Pagud, but Olivia Reed hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to put the Pride up six, 19-13 and that lead held up until the end of the third quarter.

Gasmen and Olivia Reed each scored eight apiece and Maya Reed had seven for St. Andrew's.
