Top-ranked Iolani handles No. 3 Maryknoll to stay unbeaten

KAPIOLANI—Lily Lefotu Wahinekapu only played a half, but top-ranked Iolani coasted by No. 3 Maryknoll, 44-35 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I contest at the Father A. Bray Athletic Complex Tuesday night.

The Raiders have yet to lose in league play and improves to 6-0.

"Iolani is poised and their ability to move the ball and their ability to find one another, they're a notch ahead of everybody," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said.

The Spartans drop to 2-4 in a logjam for second place along with Punahou and Kamehameha.

Lefotu Wahinekapu did most of her damage in the first quarter and finished with 13 points in the first half, but did not play in the second half due to an allergic reaction according to Iolani coach Dean Young.

"She played well in the first half and coming out of halftime, she said there was something wrong, she felt itchy," Young said.

Alexsandra Huntimer was the second leading scorer for the Raiders with eight points off the bench and Kylie Yung had seven. The Spartans had perimeter looks and was 2 for 9 in the first quarter and 3 for 11 at halftime.

"They (Iolani) played good D and it was difficult. We were trying to get stuff inside. Taimane (Faleafine-Auwae) was able to get loose a little bit," Furtado said.

"You have to close out on their shooters. They have a whole bunch of girls who can shoot and their posts are so big and strong and to close out on their shooters, so they're always a challenge for us. We had a pretty good size lineup in there too so we were closing out hard and just battling with the post so the girls did a good job," Young said.

Iolani closed out the first quarter on a 10-2 run and led by as much as 15 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Serenity Moananu had seven points and got four of her points from the free throw line as she cut a double digit deficit down to eight with 1:27 left.

Alexsandra Huntimer converted the three-point play and Jovi Wahinekapu Lefotu added another bucket to push it back up to double digits. Lilly Koki made a 3-pointer as the Spartans trailed, 30-20 at halftime.

Iolani led the entire third quarter by double digits despite Wahinekapu Lefotu and Alexis ‘Jo' Huntimer being in foul trouble.

Maryknoll switched it up to a 2-3 zone in the second quarter and continued it in the second half to try and slow down the Raiders.

"We tried to throw different things. I didn't think the man was going to be something we stayed in for long. By the time we changed to zone, we were down by at least 15," Furtado said.

"We have been working on that zone leading up to this game because we expected it. We were ready but there were a couple times we were too stagnant, we weren't moving or reversing enough. Once we got that going down to the baseline then it opened up the shooters too," Young said.

The Raiders tallied 11 steals led by the Huntimer twins, Alexsandra with four and Jo with three.

"We turned over the ball too much. They get run outs. They had two threes but everything was all around the bucket. That's what you happens when you turned the ball over against a good team. Their transition is good," Furtado said.

The Spartans were able to get the game into single digits late in the fourth quarter with over a minute left, but then it was too little too late.

Aloha Akaka led the Spartans with eight points and Maryknoll won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Iolani, 27 to 21.

"We battled to keep it close and everytime we get it to 10 or eight, we do stupid things and they run out too," Furtado said.

Iolani won the first matchup on Dec. 17, 53-47.

Up next for Maryknoll is a home game against Kamehameha, where they won on Jan. 3, 45-42 on Jan. 9. Iolani hosts Punahou on the same night.

Both teams are scheduled to meet again at Maryknoll's Clarence T. C. Ching Gymnasium on Jan. 14 and at Iolani's Lower Gymnasium on Jan. 20 to close out ILH play.
