KALIHI — By his own standards, Jayden de Laura had one of his poorest performances of his career Friday night, but the senior quarterback still passed for 377 yards and factored into five total touchdowns as top-ranked Saint Louis rolled to a 41-7 win over No. 13 Farrington in an Open Division football game.

A Senior Night crowd of about 2,000 fans at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field saw the reigning three-time state champion Crusaders (8-0) rack up 527 yards of total offense en route to their 34th consecutive win at the expense of the host Governors (2-6), who were held to just 105 net yards in the loss.

De Laura, who earlier in the week verbally committed to Washington State, completed 21 of 28 passes. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior threw touchdown passes of 14 and 66 yards to Matthew Sykes and another for 10 yards to Koali Nishigaya and also rushed for a touchdown in each half.

On Saint Louis's first play from scrimmage, de Laura hit Sykes on a deep post pattern for a 50-yard gain. Three plays later, de Laura kept on a read-option and eased his way into the end zone from two yards out to open the scoring.

The Crusaders' next score was again set-up by a de Laura-to-Sykes pass play. The pair connected for a 21-yard gain to the Govs 10-yard line. On the very next play, de Laura hit a crossing Nishigaya, who picked up a block from wideout Roman Wilson to spring him free on the touchdown.

Farrington went three-and-out and a short punt gave Saint Louis the ball back at the Govs' 30. On first down de Laura completed a 16-yard pass to Wilson on the right side. De Laura then displayed his scrambling ability on the next play, when he eluded a heavy pass rush, rolled out of the pocket to his left and found Sykes in the back left corner of the end zone for a 14-yard TD pass.

"We had a play and it wasn't originally supposed to go to me but Jayden was scrambling, so I found the sideline, he threw it to me and I just caught it," said Sykes, who finished with a season-high 159 yards on five receptions.

Saint Louis held a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, but struggled to build upon it in the second. De Laura, specifically. He was intercepted three times in the second quarter. In a span of 11 pass attempts, de Laura doubled his interception total on the season (6).

"I'm not going to make any excuses, but that's just on my part. I just gotta take care of that," de Laura said.

His first turnover came on a pass intended for Sykes along the left sideline. However, Abraham Taialpu jumped the route and beat Sykes back to the football to come down with the pick.

De Laura got the ball back in a haste when Kamoi Latu intercepted Farrington's Darius Chaffin two plays later. But on the very next play, de Laura under threw a receiver on a pass over the middle and Koalii Kama-Toth went up in the air to secure the pick.

"I mean, I stepped up through it and I thought I got it over, but I mean, shoot, that was just a bad throw on me," de Laura said.

The Govs eventually recycled the takeaway into their lone score when Chaffin made a throw on the run for a 5-yard TD pass to Kainoa Mane after play-action fake to Jonah Aina-Chaves with 5:31 left in the second quarter.

Saint Louis answered the Farrington score in just five plays with a 66-yard touchdown on a short throw from de Laura and a long run after the completion by the UCLA-commit Sykes.

"I had a little hitch. I got that, turned it up, made the first man miss — which is what coach tells us to do — and then I was gone from there," Sykes said.

After Lason Napuunoa added the PAT, Saint Louis held a 28-7 lead with just under four minutes to play in the first half.

The Crusaders forced another three-and-out on defense and the offense regained possession at their own 20-yard line with 1:35 until halftime. De Laura hit Isaac Silva for a 18-yard pitch-and-catch and also completed back-to-back 10-yard passes to Nishigaya to get them to the Farrington 36-yard line. However, on first-and-10, de Laura threw into double coverage on Sykes in the end zone and AJ Fernandez came down with it for the Govs and a touchback.

"My night on my part, just straight up, I don't think I played a great game at all, but I take all that blame for that though — I think the O-line, everybody did their job — it was just my part," de Laura said.

De Laura did, however, complete his first nine pass attempts for 162 yards. He also capped the Crusaders' first second-half possession with a 1-yard TD run and led the offense on another scoring drive — which began with his 22-yard scramble and culminated with Kaohu Kamakaiwoole's 5-yard TD run on a draw play — before giving way to backup Connor Apo.

Sykes detailed some of the conversation he had with de Laura after the latter's third interception of the night.

"I told him some of it was my fault — we all had to take the blame — but we just had to look at the iPad, look at the film, make our corrections," Sykes said. "We weren't really stressing, but we don't like to make mistakes like that so we had to fix it, come back, score more points."

Saint Louis coach Cal Lee applauded Farrington's defensive effort while expecting de Laura to learn from his mistakes.

"Well, I mean, it happens, you know? You don't want to throw interceptions, but I don't think he did it on purpose, but give credit to their defense. They did a good job playing D and they came up with (three) interceptions," Lee said.

Lee's defense wreaked havoc in the Govs' backfield throughout the night. The Crusaders recorded five of their seven sacks before halftime. Outside linebacker Nicholas Herbig led the way with 3 1/2 sacks.

Farrington was limited to 10 first downs. It was 0 of 12 on third downs.

"Yeah, well, we played pretty good defense," Lee said. "When they run the ball, you gotta stack the box. It's no big secret, if you run the ball you gotta put more guys in the box."

Chaffin threw for 71 yards on 8-of-13 passing in the loss.

Saint Louis was 5 of 8 on third downs and passed for 19 of their 28 total first downs.

The Crusaders close out the regular season at Waianae Friday, while Farrington will visit No. 4 Kahuku next Saturday.
