KALIHI — Kaimuki weathered the elements and Roosevelt's rally and Koby Moananu had a game-sealing interception to preserve a 28-26 victory in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II showdown at Farrington's Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field Friday.

The Bulldogs (5-2 overall, 4-1 OIA) rebounded from a 45-31 loss to Kaiser (6-0 overall, 4-0 OIA) last week to hand the No. 15 Rough Riders (5-1 overall, 4-1 OIA) their first loss of the season.

"Every win is important. Nothing is as big as a win over a team like Roosevelt. Those guys are on fire and you saw what those guys did and they had as much of a chance to win. We played a hell of a good team in Roosevelt," said Kaimuki coach David Tautofi.

Koby Moananu, Kaimuki's versatile two-way player, had two momentum-changing interceptions go along with five catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.

"That's what Koby is capable of doing. We hope we can get that consistency every single game. There's a lot he can work on and a lot he can get better on. Proud of him, but he's not where we know he can be. We'll go back to work on Monday," said Tautofi.

Jayden Maiava, who passed for 418 yards the previous week, passed for 217 yards and a pair of scores on 15-of-24 passing and no picks.

"He's still young and he's still learning. Tonight his composure showed," Tautofi said of Maiava.

Workhorse Naomas Asuega-Fualaau rushed for 116 yards and two scores on 39 carries.

"We hop on their backs. Jayden and Naomas played phenomenal tonight. They played their hearts out for our homecoming game," Moananu said.

"When you can have a good running attack and playing a good team like Roosevelt that won't go down, having the advantage we had it was crucial for us to control the clock. It went well, we controlled it the way we wanted to, but still some things that didn't go the way we needed it to, but glad the ball rolled our way tonight," Tautofi added.

Kaimuki drew experience from their rain-drenched state tournament game last year against Kamehameha-Hawaii as the Bulldogs played through the pouring rain that came in spurts throughout the night.

"The boys handled it very well. We knew it was going to rain tonight and it didn't faze them much," said Tautofi.

The Bulldogs decided to forgo the field goal since their holder was hurt and ended up turning it over on downs on Asuega-Fualaau's 3-yard loss. Sky Ogata threw 19 and 9 yard passes to Devin Naihe and Aalona Moneilh and rushed for a 7-yard gain before Myka Kukahiwa scored on a 34-yard run. Ogata's pass to Monteilh fell incomplete as the Rough Riders trailed, 28-26 with 4:03 left on the clock.

Kaimuki ran six plays and took two delay-of-game penalties to milk the clock, but the process loss yardage and was forced to punt on fourth-and-27. Roosevelt took over on the 50 and with 27 seconds remaining, Ogata launched it deep but Moananu nabbed the pass for his second pick of the night on the Bulldogs' 12-yard line and took a knee to end the game.

"I saw the ball up in the air and I had to go get. I came up with it on that one," said Moananu.

Ogata passed for 186 yards on 16-of-31 passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions—two coming from Moananu in the loss.

Roosevelt broke the scoreless stalemate and took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after Ogata threw a 13-yard touchdown to Chase Akana.

Kaimuki scored 21-unanswered points in the second quarter as Asuega-Fualaau rushed for a 2-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7 and the Bulldogs turned Avin Tanioka's interception into points as Asuega-Fuaalau shed tackles to rumble in for a 21-yard touchdown.

Maiava was 9 for 16 with 100 passing yards before getting the ball to Moananu for a 23-yard score to give the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead.

"On that play, I think it was designed for the backside but he looked my way and he threw a nice ball through the safety and corners and I had to go get it," Moananu said.

Shepherd Kekahuna, who had 126 kickoff return yards, raced past Kaimuki defenders for an 89-yard touchdown to give Roosevelt some momentum heading into halftime as it trailed, 21-14.

The Bulldogs went up two touchdowns after Maiava threw a 34-yard strike to Kaulana Kaluna, who had a game-high 93 receiving yards, on a scoring drive that started on their own 41.

The Rough Riders responded with a eight-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Ogata to Kolea Pa-Macalino, but the kick failed as Roosevelt trailed, 28-20.

Roosevelt ran 13 plays on a drive that started late in the third quarter on their own 42 and picked up four first downs but could only get to the Kaimuki 14 as Moananu snuffed the potential scoring drive with his first interception.

"All night they've been throwing that hitch. So our coaches told me to play at seven (yards) and jump it if they throw it again. I read the quarterback's eyes and got it," said Moananu.

In a rematch of last year's OIA title game, Kaimuki avenges their 28-18 loss.

Roosevelt will host undefeated and first-place Kaiser at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium on Friday, Sept. 27.

Kaimuki travels out to Pearl City (2-5 overall, 2-4 OIA) to take on the Chargers on the same night.
