AIEA — The Kailua Surfriders brought more than a wave to Aiea's homecoming game.

They brought a storm.

Visiting Kailua dominated the game from the get go and scored all of its points in the first half for a 49-7 OIA Division I win over Na Alii on a rainy Friday night.

The Surfriders made 11 tackles for loss and Cameron Friel threw four 175 yards and four touchdowns — all to different receivers — as Kailua earned its second straight win to improve to 3-4 on the year after starting the season with an 0-3 record.

The Kailua defense also had five pass breakups and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a 32-yard score by Kalai Cardin-Kiaha to give the Sufriders a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter.

"Our defense has been playing that way the whole season," said Kailua coach Hauoli Wong. "We know that if the offense catches up to our defense, then we have a really tough team. I think we're on the right track right now."

Wong's assessment was correct.

On the Surfriders' opening drive put together an 11-play drive that started with nine consecutive run plays. After an incomplete pass, Friel hooked up with Koalii Kohatsu on a fade route in the right side of the end zone for a 15-yard TD on fourth down. Molly Jones' PAT made it 7-0 with 8:30 showing in the first quarter game clock.

Aiea's opening drive was a different story. Running back Javon Miller was dropped for a loss on Na Alii's first play from scrimmage and Cardin-Kiaha picked off Aiea's Kayson Castillo two plays later to give the Surfriders a short field at the Aiea 36-yard line.

After three straight runs by Samson Rasay to start the drive, Friel hit Landon Clevenger for another 15-yard TD to give Kailua a 14-0 lead.

The Surfriders turned it over on downs on their next possession, but benefited from a shanked punt to regain possession inside Aiea territory. A 45-yard screen pass to Rasay set up Friel's 12-yard scoring strike to Kamryn Kahoonei to extend the lead to 21-0 with 10:25 remaining in the second quarter.

After Cardin-Kiaha's 32-yard pick-six and a 1-yard TD run by Brian-Allen Kamanu, Aiea finally got on the board when Castillo heaved a 77-yard TD pass to a streaking Dylan Soberano down the left sideline.

However, Kailua answered immediately with Rasay's 70-yard TD run on the Surfriders' next play from scrimmage.

Friel's 31-yard TD pass to Raynen Ho Mook with 8.4 left in the first half provided the final points of the game.

With just one league game on Aiea's schedule, Na Alii (1-6 overall, 1-4 OIA D1) has been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
