HAWAII KAI — Easton Yoshino tossed six touchdowns and the Cougars held off Kaimuki's second-half rally to pull away for a 45-31 victory in a pivotal Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II contest at Kaiser Stadium Friday.

The win helped the Cougars improve to 6-0 overall, 4-0 in the OIA.

The Bulldogs saw a two-game winning streak snapped to fall to 4-2 overall, 3-1 OIA.

Easton Yoshino threw for 280 yards on 11-of-19 passing and was intercepted twice.

"It feels good. The linemen, that's where it's at. It's won in the trenches. It give props to our linemen and our skill players," Yoshino said.

"I think it was about settling into the game. There is still the youth factor. Him being a freshman, sometimes it takes him a while go get going. When he does, that's the result right there," Kaiser coach Tim Seaman said of his signal caller.

Three of Yoshino's touchdown passes went to Kamakana Mahiko, who caught five passes for 124 yards. Dre Falls had four catches, 109 yards and a pair of scores, and brother Mason Yoshino caught a 24-yard touchdown.

"We have good receiver depth. They made the plays, I just put the ball there," Yoshino said.

Kaiser opened up their first offensive series on the Kaimuki 13 and it resulted in a 30-yard field goal from Kyler Halvorsen.

Jayden Maiava threw for 418 yards, four touchdowns, one interception on 15-of-41 passing in the loss.

Maiava's 36-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Faasoa gave Kaimuki their only lead of the night as the Cougars responded with three unanswered touchdowns.

Easton Yoshino's first touchdown pass went to Mahiko for 13 yards. After Duke Minihan recovered the fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Kaiser found the end zone as Easton Yoshino hit Falls for a 21-yard score. The Cougars had a 61-yard touchdown nullified due to a block in the back penalty, but two plays later Easton Yoshino hooked up with Mahiko for 12 yards to make it, 24-6.

"That was big. Our defense was a big help in our win. You have to give props to them too," Yoshino said.

Kurt Kawamoto added a 25-yard field goal just over 12 seconds before halftime. Kaiser led, 24-9.

Jesse Stroede's 53-yard kickoff return helped set up Easton Yoshino's 27-yard touchdown strike to Falls to make it, 31-9 to open the third quarter.

However, a 22-point lead slowly evaporated as the Bulldogs relied on defensive turnovers to put themselves back in it.

Matthew Williams picked off Brock Perreira and two plays later he took Maiava's pass 92 yards to the house to bring the Bulldogs within two scores and a two-point conversion, 31-16.

"Kaimuki played with so much heart. You knew they were going to make a big run and they did. I'm happy our kids hung in there. It was a night of big plays on both sides for both teams. Again, it's a win but yet we have another game coming up and we have to refocus," Seaman said.

Koby Moananu intercepted Yoshino and four plays later hauled in a 19-yard touchdown. Maiava's two-point pass to a wide-open Faasoa made it a one score game, 31-24 with 8:52 left in the fourth quarter. Moananu had a game-high eight receptions for 156 yards.

Three rushes by Calvin Lime set up a Yoshino-to-Yoshino connection as Easton found brother Mason from 24 yards out to give the Cougars a two-touchdown cushion.

After Kaiser's defense forced Kaimuki to punt, Yoshino threw his third touchdown, sixth overall to Mahiko for 60 yards to put Kaiser up, 45-24.

Naomas Asuega-Fualaau (three catches, 111 yards) took a short pass from Maiava and turned it into a 89-yard touchdown for the final score of the night.

Joseph Chin had four tackle for losses, Duke Minihan had two sacks to lead the Kaiser defense. Josh Okamoto had two of the team's four pass break ups and Ethan Domen had an interception.

"We made some big plays on defense but there are a lot of things we need to clean up as we move along," Seaman said.

Kaiser looks to keep the streak alive as it takes on Waialua on Friday, Sept. 20.

Kaimuki must bounce back quickly as it hosts unbeaten and defending OIA champion Roosevelt at Farrington on the same night.
