WAHIAWA — Kiaka Pio recorded two of his team's five sacks to lead No. 12 Leilehua to a 23-13 win over No. 13 Waipahu in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football game at Hugh Yoshida Stadium Friday night.

The Mules (3-0 overall, 2-0 league) did all of their scoring before halftime. The Marauders (1-2, 1-1) got all of their points after the break.

Leilehua's defense accounted for four takeaways and limited the Marauders to 120 yards of total offense despite allowing 182 rushing yards by Waipahu running back Alfred Failauga, who became the state's all-time leader in rushing yards in the loss.

"I told them that I don't mind if he gets the record because he only got a certain amount against us, so he got the record off other people, we just happened to finished off the last few yards, but that's fine because we will take the team award than the individual award and that's how the kids played tonight," Mules coach Mark Kurisu said.

Pio, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound junior defensive end, was one of four Mules to register a sack and also forced a fumble. Jaku Hanohano-Baptista, Jashawn Wakefield and Kalani Atwood each had a sack and Hanohano-Baptista also recovered a fumble.

"Everything starts with the d-line, not just me getting to the quarterback, but the rest of the d-line, without them my job wouldn't be easy, or the secondary's job wouldn't be easy, so overall it starts from the d-line," Pio said.

Cy Acohido, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior linebacker, recovered a loose ball in the end zone after an errant long snap on a Waipahu punt for a touchdown late in the first quarter. He also intercepted a pass in the second half, as did Ethan Kuth and Narwin Luther forced a fumble for the Mules.

Kurisu was pleased by another week of improvement by his defense, which limited Waipahu to 3 of 12 on third down conversions. It put consistent pressure on Marauders quarterback Cody Marques, who was only able to complete 5 of his 20 pass attempts for 18 yards and no touchdowns.

"We're young and we got a lot of new guys, we graduated a bunch of guys last year that were just tremendous playmakers and we're putting a bunch of new guys in there and it's good to see growth in tough moments and this was a tough game, it was really was, so it good to see them fight," Kurisu said.

Kalei Akagi passed for 122 yards and two touchdowns. The junior quarterback completed 15 of his 30 pass attempts and was intercepted once.

Akagi's 2-yard TD pass over the middle to Vitale Afoa on third down opened the scoring. The PAT was blocked and Leilehua led, 6-0, with 6:58 left in the first quarter. Three plays prior to the scoring play, Akagi threw a dart over the middle to Jayzon Ramos for an 18-yard completion to move the chains on a third-and-16. After back-to-back handoffs to 6-foot-2, 230-pound Jashawn Wakefield, Akagi faked the give to him before pulling the ball out and tossing it over the middle to a crossing Afoa for the touchdown.

Less than a minute after Acohido's special teams' score, Leilehua got the ball back after Pio recorded a strip-sack of Marques and Hanohano-Baptista recovered in the red zone. It eventually led to a Joseph Edwards a 30-yard field goal that gave Leilehua a 16-0 lead with 10:24 left in the second quarter.

On their next possession, the Mules found some success by motioning a second player into the backfield and utilizing misdirection. Akagi hit his cousin, Cody Akagi, for a 15-yard completion and later in the drive, he found Benjamin Lockman for a 12-yard pick-up. Along the way, Ramos picked up 15 yards on a nifty reverse to the short side of the field on an option pitch from Kalei Akagi.

Leilehua took advantage of an encroachment penalty against the Marauders on 4th-and-2 from the 14-yard line and capped the 10-play drive with a 10-yard TD pass from Akagi to Ramos on a wide receiver screen two plays later. Edwards added the PAT to stretch the score to 23-0 with 4:53 remaining in the first half.

Ramos finished with game-highs of six receptions for 70 yards. Eight different players caught at least one pass for the Mules.
