Capello, Biondi helped Raiders, Saints triumph

Male Athlete of the Week: Lucas Biondi, Saint Francis volleyball
There were no big-game jitters for Lucas Biondi Saturday night.

The Saint Francis outside hitter recorded match-highs of 19 kills and 14 digs to lead his team to its second straight state title with a four-set win over Kapaa in the title game of the New City Nissan Division II Boys Volleyball Championships at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena. Biondi, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, also had three solo blocks, two set assists and a service ace and was selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player by media and the HHSAA.

"He did an awesome job," Saints coach Dandi Holder said. "He did great defensively as far as on the net and also in the back row, and offensively he put balls away and did a very good job. He took smart swings and he did what he needed to do."

Holder said that while Biondi's play has been steady all season, he stepped up to the proverbial plate for the state tournament.

Biondi had 15 kills, two aces, one dig and an assist in a quarterfinal-round sweep of Nanakuli Thursday. The following night he tallied 15 kills, nine digs, four aces, two solo blocks and an assist to help the Saints rally to a four-set semifinal win over Seabury Hall after dropping the opening set. Friday's match was the final home game for the program, with the school set to close its doors after 95 years at the end of the school year.

"I don't know if that dropped set was just second-round nerves or us not playing to our potential, but the level of play was a little bit on the lower side for us, but Lucas really kept his cool throughout the whole game," Holder said. "He wasn't getting frustrated and he was letting his teammates know that ‘this is the last step before we can go to the championship game. Visualize that this is the last time you guys will be here on this court as a Saint Francis Saint, so let's push ourselves to do better and be better right now.' He gave a speech and it just resonated with the kids and they pushed through those next sets."

In Saturday's title match, Biondi took 43 swings and hit .256.

"It's something that he's been talking about from the very beginning, they all have from the very beginning," Holder said. "Their goal was to bring back another championship for Saint Francis and he was prepared. He came in and he's like, ‘I'm ready to go,' all the kids were prepared to go."

Holder said between the third and fourth sets, Biondi implored his teammates to give it their all.

"He said that this is the last thing we can do for Saint Francis and that sunk in with us. There were a little bit of tears in some of us hearing that and realizing that this is the last of the last. It sunk in and they came out in the fourth set and it was all out from there," Holder said.

The Saints hit .444 and limited the Warriors to a negative .231 kill percentage in the fourth and final set.

Biondi was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Makua Marumoto, Faaope Laloulu, Walter Berthold and Jesus Garcia.

Holder called the composition of this year's squad "unconventional."

"Basically we had a bunch of leaders in their own sports, Kordel and Kam (Ng) from basketball, (Laloulu) from football and then Jesus, Luke and Makua with volleyball, so there was a lot of I would call it, alphas, on the team, but each one knew their own role, which worked really well for us because everyone brought their leadership within their own roles and it played out awesome for us," Holder said.

Biondi, a member of the Spike and Serve volleyball club, attended Saint Francis as an eighth grader before transferring to Roosevelt for his freshman season. However, he did not play for the Rough Riders last year and wound up returning to Saint Francis for his sophomore year.

"This was his first year playing on a high school team, but he's very passionate about volleyball and he really loves being out there," Holder said. "He was a big help for us at the service line, he got a lot of aces this season, but he'd put a tough serve out there all the time. His play was consistent throughout the entire season."

Holder said Biondi has not yet decided on which school he will attend next season.

"Wherever he goes, they're gonna be mighty lucky," Holder quipped.

Saint Francis completed the season with a 17-3 record and its second state championship in as many years, but the celebration has been a bittersweet one.

"Overall it's heartfelt, but it's sad at the same time. mean, you could feel the happiness, but you could also feel a lot of sadness within the kids and for the parents and supporters as well," Holder said. "It's just sad to see a lot of people's hard work kind of slip away. I really wish there could be another year (because) my team is young. I wish we could have made another appearance, but from here on out I wish the best to all my kids and all my athletes and I know wherever they go, they'll be just fine."

Female Athlete of the Week: Allie Capello, Iolani softball
For the Iolani softball team to capture its first state championship in nearly two full decades, it most certainly took a team effort and among the many contributors to the title run was freshman right fielder/pitcher Allie Capello.

Capello put together a stellar first season at the varsity level and capped it off with a solid week of play during last week's DataHouse Division I State Championships. She batted 6 for 11 (.545 average) in four games last week, including a 3-for-4 effort with six RBI in Saturday's 17-2 win over defending champion Leilehua.

Iolani coach Benny Agbayani praised the play of the freshman No. 3 hitter.

"I think she stepped up to be a leader," Agbayani said. "There's a lot of pressure coming in as a freshman batting third, behind Aleia (Agbayani), but I think she did a very good job making the adjustments as the tournament went on."

After going 0 for 3 at the plate in Wednesday's first-round win over Waianae, Capello led the way in Thursday's quarterfinal rout of Kealakehe — but did so with her arm. The right-handed Capello tossed a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and three walks in the five-inning win over the Waveriders. The outing was key, Benny Agbayani said, to allow for his daughters Aleia and Ailana — the team's top two pitchers — to rest their arms for the rest of the weekend.

"That was huge. That was another thing, she stepped up with the pitching and we didn't have to use Ailana and Aleia, and it helped," he said.

It was Capello's ninth pitching appearance this season and the second time this season that she registered nine strikeouts. In 28 1/3 innings pitched, she has allowed 26 hits with 35 strikeouts and 14 walks and has an earned run average of 4.22.

"She's still learning, but nothing fazes her," Agbayani said. "She just goes out there and she works hard."

Capello also batted 2 for 3 with a walk against Kealakehe with one double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored. The following night she drove in three runs, walked once and scored twice in an 11-8 semifinal win over Baldwin. She belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning and pushed across another run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

"She's been playing the game for a long time and especially in those pressure moments, sometimes she didn't do it, but most of the time that we really needed her, she came through and that's a big thing coming out of a freshman starting out at the varsity level," Agbayani said.

But the 5-foot-5 Capello wasn't done yet. In her first at-bat against Leilehua in Saturday's state final, she opened the scoring with a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning. Capello singled to right and brought in another run her next time up and then reached on a fielder's choice in her third at-bat. She drove in two more runs with her single up the middle in the fourth and came around to score as part of a nine-run inning for the Raiders.

Agbayani, who collected 299 hits, including 39 home runs in a five-year MLB career before posting 613 hits and 90 home runs in a six-year stint in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, offered a blunt scouting report of Capello the hitter.

"Don't throw it over the plate because she's gonna smash it. She knows the strike zone and she knows what she wants to do when she gets up there," he said.

Capello has surely benefitted from a familiarity with Agbayani. She plays for his club team, Crush, and her father Josh is a close friend of Agbayani.

"I've known her since she was born, basically, so I would never be surprised by what she's done because I've seen her grow as a child and I knew what I was gonna get and I knew what she was gonna become. The other thing is I think she feels comfortable because I've been around her since she was born, so I mean, all I knew is I had to coach her up and she'd be good," Agbayani said.

Agbayani added that Capello's ability to provide protection for Aleia, while batting in front of clean-up hitter Kai Barrett, was pivotal to Iolani's success.

"I think hitting behind Aleia was a lot of pressure because if Aleia gets on (base), (Capello) is next to drive in the runs, so I think having great at-bats, keeping her composure was one of the great things about her season, but she had a tough job as a freshman to hit between a two seniors in Aleia and Kai. I was very fortunate that we had all of them hitting at the same time," Benny Agbayani said.

Capello, who can also play both corner infield positions, was one of five Raiders selected to the all-tournament team. She was joined by Barrett, Kalena Markham, Ailana Agbayani and most outstanding player Aleia Agbayani.

"She can play where I need her to play and that's what she does best. She's a very coachable kid," Agbayani said of Capello. "She's very mature. She's young and she doesn't think, she just goes out and tries to do her best, and I think that's what makes her successful because she knows there's nothing to lose and she goes out there and she gives it her all."

Capello batted .423 on the season with 30 hits — 14 of them for extra bases, including nine home runs — with 42 RBI and 27 runs batted in.

"It's fantastic. I mean, it's a great season. She set a really high bar for herself for the next three years and she's only going to get better," Agbayani said.

The Raiders finished second in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and were unseeded in the 12-team state tournament, but overcame the odds to claim the top prize for just the third time in program history and finished with a record of 19-5.

"It kind of sunk in over the weekend, but I think a lot of these girls had to pinch themselves because I think they kind of realized that all the hard work that they did really paid off for them," Agbayani said. "Everyone from the bench to all the starters."
