MANOA — No. 7 Iolani's 17-2 win against No. 2 Leilehua was as simple as A-B-C.

The vaunted Raiders' first four batters of the order — Ailana Agbayani, Aleia Agbayani, Kai Barrett and Allie Capello — combined to drive in 14 runs to give the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I runners-up their first DataHouse Division I state softball crown since 2000 and third overall Saturday night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

It was the second consecutive tournament final to end with the 10-run differential mercy rule. The Mules (12-7) did the same in their 14-4 in win in six innings against Punahou last year. All 11 championship bracket winners in the tournament scored in double digits. The 17 runs were the most scored by the winner in a title game, breaking Campbell's 16-4 win against Mililani in 2015. Iolani (19-5) scored 50 runs in four games en route to the title, breaking Leilehua's 49, which it did last year in the same number of games. Unseeded teams have won the last five titles.

"Sometimes it goes, sometimes it doesn't," Leilehua coach Wendell Au said. "Just the bats weren't there and that's what we live and die by and that's how it is. Hat's off to Iolani. They came out as aggressors. They came out swinging."

The Agbayanis, Barrett and Capello represent the cornerstone and future of Raiders softball. Aleia Agbayani and Barrett are seniors who played in the state tournament as freshmen, who finished as consolation champions. They did not make it back the next two years. Infused by impact freshmen Ailana Agbayani and Capello, the Raiders returned with a bang. The four were named to the All-Tournament team along with senior Kalena Markham with Aleia chosen as Most Outstanding Player.

"It's been a go since my freshman year," Aleia said. "To actually make it this year, it's amazing, especially as a senior."

The seniors have set a foundation for future trips to states.

"We came out during the season and like the seniors haven't been here since their freshmen year, so we knew we had to come out strong," Capello said.

Aleia Agbayani, the starting pitcher for the Raiders, tossed 3 1/3 non-consecutive innings, allowing three hits and two runs along with a walk and strikeout. In her first two innings, she retired the Mules on five ground outs and an infield pop. But she labored a bit in the third, loading the bases with a single, hit batsman and walk. With one out, their father pulled Ailana from shortstop. After she walked the first batter to force in a run, Ailana struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

"The plan was to put her in, change it up a a little big," Aleia said of her sister taking over. "(Her performance) was great. Just to see her work really hard."

Ailana struck out the side in her next inning before giving the ball back to her older sister to pitch what would be the final inning. Aleia gave up a run on two hits, but leaped for joy when left fielder Lexie Tilton caught Alana Jarra-Parker's fly ball for the game-ending out.

"I know Aleia wanted the ball today," Iolani first-year coach Benny Agbayani said. "I told her, ‘This is your game and your sister's got your back.' I said, ‘Go out there, do your best.' I sent her back out there because this is her senior year, her final pitching moment."

The Raiders jumped on Leilehua starter Alyssa Abe in the bottom of the first. The Agbayani sisters each singled and scored on Capbell's three-run home run to left.

Iolani sent 11 batters up in a five-run second on five consecutive RBI singles from Ailana, Aleia, Capello, Barrett and Kaluna Markham.

The Mules got their first run in the third, when Kiana Domingo drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Raiders sent 12 batters up in a nine-run fourth. Rylie-Ann Wada and Capello each had two-run singles, Ailana and Aleia each drew bases-loaded walks and Barrett blasted a three-run homer to boot.

The win was emotional for the Raiders' first-year coach. As Benny Agbayani's oldest daughter leaves the program as a champion, his second-youngest child has just begun her journey.

"It is a special moment because one daughter's leaving and the other one just came in," Benny Agbayani said. "I thank God, I'm so grateful that they could win a championship together."
