SALT LAKE — Jalen Ah Yat drove in five runs and Bryson Ewaliko got it done on the mound as No. 10 Kailua wiped out Leilehua, 11-1, in five innings at Moanalua's field Thursday.

The Surfriders (11-2) advance to the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I semifinals at Les Murakami Stadium and will take on Campbell in Friday's 4 p.m. game followed by Mililani and Kaiser.

"This is a big win for us so we can secure a spot into states," Ewaliko said.

Kailua limited a Mules team to one run and five hits after Leilehua posted 17 runs and 14 hits to plaster Roosevelt the day before.

"I knew going in, they could hit the ball and they showed that they could. We were fortunate enough to hold them to one run today," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said.

Ewaliko struck out six batters, walked four and scattered five hits in five innings of work on 78 pitches to improve to 5-0 on the season.

"Earlier in the game, we had our fast ball and slider going, and later in the game, we started getting our curve ball over that kept them off balanced," Ishigo said.

The senior pitcher struck out lead off hitter Hunter Sasaki, Ty Yukumoto singled to right and Ewaliko walked Kaika Cordero before fanning the next two batters.

Brandon Sarae led off with a walk and Ah Yat brought him in with a home run over the right field fence. The Surfriders followed up with two hits and two walked batters to later add three more runs to take a 5-0 lead.

"I went up to the plate and be more relaxed. My at bats this year were slow and I tense up too much. I was trying to stay relaxed through the at bats," Ah Yat said of the home run.

"That was a big energy booster right there," Ewaliko said after his team had a five-point cushion heading into the second inning.

Kailua's infield backed up their pitcher with key stops. Ewaliko struck out Zane Staszkow, and Kayde Iranon sparked the double play to end the inning. In the third, Taylor Takata had the unassisted out to second then tossed it over to first for the first two outs before Ewaliko got Yukumoto to pop out to short.

"They have been doing good for us and we have more double plays than last season for sure. They've been coming up big for us lately," Ah Yat said.

"Our middle infield came up big today. We had solid defense," Ewaliko said.

Ewaliko went 2 for 3 at the plate and took Lii Wofford's first pitch offering over the left field fence for a solo home run.

"I seen the ball I could hit and I went for it. I didn't swing too hard, coach said to go loose and quick and big hits would happen," Ewaliko said.

"Bryson has been hitting for us the whole year and he's been pitching for us for the last three years so we expect that out of him," Ishigo said.

The Surfriders added four more runs on three hits after the third inning. Matthew Kaleiohi led off with a single and Chavis Canceicao walked. Sarae drove in a run before Ah Yat blasted his second home run around the same area as Kailua led 10-0.

"We went up more relaxed than usual. We were trying to look for base hits and the big hits just came," Ah Yat said.

The Mules threatened to score after Cordero reached on an error, but was gunned down as he was sliding into home. Wofford and Jaxon Hotta each singled and Jaku Hanohano was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ewaliko struck out Staszkow and center fielder Kaleiohi robbed Nathaniel Dela Cruz's deep hit as Kailua came away unscathed.

Kaleiohi went 2 for 2 and tripled in the fourth and Conceicao drove in his second run of the afternoon to make it, 11-0.

Masen Reis led off with a walk then scored off of Cordero's single to left field for the Mules' only run. 

Kaleo Nishimoto pitched 1/3 inning to allow five runs, all earned in the loss. 

Leilehua (8-6) will take on Farrington as four teams will battle for two state tournament spots. The sixth place finisher will take on the Big Island Interscholastic Federation for final spot on May 4.
