Male Athlete of the Week: Noa Cardinez, Kapaa baseballNoa Cardinez's value was on full display last Wednesday.
The Kapaa junior tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts while recording two RBIs at the plate in the Warriors' 2-0 win over Waimea at Ron Martin Field.
The victory locked up the Kauai Interscholastic Federation first-round title for the Warriors, who won their fourth straight game to improve to 4-1-1 in league play.
Kapaa eighth-year coach Bryan Aiwohi said Cardinez's approach on the mound against the Menehunes was impressive.
"The best part was he was calm, cool, collected. Nothing phased him. He was going on his business like another day at work."
Having that mindset and ability is testament to Cardinez's hard work and father Mike's tutelage, Aiwohi said.
"You don't really have to teach him much," the Kapaa coach said of Cardinez. "He's got so much talent. His dad has been his coach most of his life. I got to give him the credit because that's why the kid is so talented. He does a lot of work on his own and it shows. When he brings that kind of play that he's got on the field, it makes it easy for us as coaches."
Cardinez, who is 6-foot-2, is regarded by many on Kauai as one of the top prospects of his class. In addition to pitching, the Kapaa junior plays shortstop and catcher depending on who the Warriors use on the mound.
"He's got good range for a shortstop because of his size and big arm. He's tough behind the plate also," said Aiwohi. "He's being looked at by a lot of schools, (University of Hawaii) being one of them. I still don't think he's reached his potential yet."
The Kapaa junior also led the effort at the plate against Waimea. Batting third in the lineup, Cardinez brought home leadoff hitter Kaimi Malina from third base in the bottom of the first inning to give Kapaa the early lead. In the third inning, Cardinez hit an RBI double to right-center to plate Malina for the final run of the afternoon.
Getting the win against the Menehunes (2-3) on March 27 also ended the league's first round in the Warriors favor. It also prevented extra games from being played to determine the winner of the first round.
Had Waimea came out victorious last Wednesday, the Menehunes and Kauai (1-3-1) would have had to make up an earlier regular season contest that was rained out. If Waimea wins the make-up game against the Red Raiders, Kapaa and Kauai would have to finish out their 10-inning contest on March 13 that ended in a 4-4 tie. If the Warriors win that previously-tied contest against Kauai, Kapaa and Waimea would have to play each other one more time to determine the first-round title.
Fortunately for the Warriors, Cardinez's big day allowed the team to enjoy a nice break until league play picks up on April 10.
"It's good. It's a good rest pit for us. The guys' arms are a little tired. We go back to basics this week," said Aiwohi. "I think it's good for everybody. Good for the coaches too. We made it a little easier on us this time."
Cardinez and the Warriors next play against Kauai next Wednesday against Kauai at Vidinha Stadium.
Female Athlete of the Week: Allison Ogoso, Pearl City girls water poloAllison Ogoso put on a fireworks show to start OIA girls water polo second-round play.
The Pearl City senior scored a season-high seven goals in the Chargers' 12-11 win over Kalaheo last Wednesday at K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.
It was a contest where the Chargers had to rally from a 3-1 first quarter deficit.
"I would say that we started off a little slow, then after getting a little more motivated, we just all kind of came together and clicked as a team really well," said Pearl City assistant coach Kaylie Miyashita.
Ogoso was at the forefront of Pearl City's rally. The 5-foot-1 senior, who entered the match with just eight goals scored of the season, had her best performance of the year to help the Chargers get a key win that keeps them alive for a play-in spot in the league's postseason tournament.
Miyashita said that Ogoso's best asset is her speed in the pool, but noted that developing her shot over the season allowed her to have a strong outing against the Mustangs.
"One thing I can say about Alli is she's very determined and she wants to improve. I know that sometimes she gets frustrated because a lot of times her shots, they don't get in, so sometimes she hesitates. But I know she wants to improve and get better so I see her just taking those shots.
"I feel now, she's trying to adapt more to what's comfortable to her shooting and trying to find her spot in the goal and where she wants. She's motivated to have her shot to be better."
Ogoso's accuracy on her shot was on display in one of her seven goals against the Mustangs. During the match last Wednesday, Kalaheo left one of Pearl City's players unguarded to put another shot blocker in goal, but Ogoso was still able to find the seam between the two players to find the back of the net.
"Alli found that open space in that split second, and she was able to lob it or shoot it in," said Miyashita.
The Pearl City senior also netted the game-winning goal against the Mustangs. Ogoso was able to break free from a Kalaheo defender near the top of the offense and swam unabated to the 2-meter line for the final goal of the match.
"Alli did a spin move and she was able to turn the girl and spin the ball around her. She dribbled the ball and went all the way to the 2-meter line and pick it up and score," Miyashita said describing the play.
Ogoso, a four-year player in the sport, is also a leader for her teammates.
"We have a lot of new girls either in their first year or their first year was last year, so they are still kind of learning the game. The girls look up to her and looks towards her for help," Miyashita said.
Ogoso and the Chargers next take to the pool on Friday against Kailua at Kaimuki.
