Knights' Turner, Owls' Higuchi keyed big wins

Female Athlete of the Week: Mele Turner, Castle softball
Mele Turner delivered her best pitching performance of the season last Tuesday and the result was Castle's first back-to-back win.

The 5-foot-5 senior tossed a five-hit complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks to lead the Knights to a 7-1 win over visiting Kalani. Turner improved to 3-2 on the year with the victory and lowered her ERA to 3.61.

Castle coach Jon Berinobis said Turner had her best command against the Falcons.

"Kalani has some hitters that put the ball in play well, but she mixed up her speeds and kept the ball down," Berinobis said. "She used the change-ups a lot more, so she got some batters on that, which was good to see because we've been working on that with her."

Turner's seven strikeouts are the most she has recorded since she fanned 13 in a season-opening win over Kaimuki on March 2. Berinobis, however, was more pleased at the fact that Turner issued no free passes Tuesday.

"The other thing is she didn't hit anybody that game," he said. "Every other game she's hit at least two batters and last year she hit quite a bit because she tries very hard to keep the ball inside but sometimes it gets away from her and she ends up hitting batters, so one of the other things we're trying to work on is working on the other side of the plate."

Turner is one of four fourth-year players on the team, along with Shayla Young, Rayjah Majit-Gorian and Julieanna Souza. Last season, Turner shared the pitching duties with Ashaiya Lopes but has taken over the role this year. She has been the lone pitcher used in five of the Knights' six games — all but six of the team's 33 innings.

"She's been improving a lot. Toward the end of last year and during the preseason tournaments (this season), we've been trying to focus more on becoming a pitcher versus just being a thrower," Berinobis said.

For Turner, that's meant more pitching to contact and less of trying to blow it by every batters.

"They want to throw harder when they get hit and the more they got hit, the harder they wanted to throw, so this year she's a lot more focused on the mound and she's working on all of her pitches and mixing up her speeds and that's been helping us out defensively by keeping it close, whereas in the past we've been trying to throw harder and harder and getting hit and not helping, so that's been her biggest improvement this year," Berinobis said.

The Knights dropped a string of three straight games earlier this month — including a pair of one-run losses to division-front runners Roosevelt and Kaiser — but have won their last two to even their record at 3-3. They currently sit in fourth place in the seven-team Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East standings.

"We hung with Roosevelt. We took the lead, but just couldn't hang on to it and Roosevelt one through nine (hitters) has got a lot of speed, and they're good hitters so it's hard to shut them down and they kept coming back," Berinobis said. "The Kaiser game, both runs we gave up were unearned runs and then in two innings we ran ourselves off the bases — which probably cost us two or three runs — but they're playing a lot tougher and Mele has been keeping us close, so we just gotta continue doing that."

Berinobis said the recent victories, as well as the narrow losses, have served Turner well.

"She's gained a lot of confidence. We've been in every game and the ones we lost, we coulda won, (but) we just made some adjustments on defense that have really helped us out and we've been making more defensive plays and that helps her pitching because she knows she's getting help behind her," Berinobis said.

Part of Turner's success this season has also come with a jump in maturity.

"I think she came back this year with a little more matured attitude, a little more focused on being a better teammate and being a part of the team versus doing things on her own and that's made a big difference. She's counting on her teammates to help her versus just trying to do everything herself," Berinobis said.

Turner, who plays third base or shortstop in the few instances that she is not pitching, began the season as the Knights' third batter.

"I had her hitting third, then I had her hitting fourth and she went as low as fifth, then she started putting the ball in play well and I moved her up into the leadoff spot," Berinobis said of Turner, who is batting .333 on the season.

The quartet of Turner, Young, Majit-Gorian and Souza were freshmen when Castle struggled with low numbers and forfeited much of its season. It's a far cry from where they find themselves now.

"This year has been a whole lot different," Berinobis said. "The attitudes, the commitments — they're just a lot better teammates to one another — there's no cliques, they all get along well and that has made a big difference. I think for them, they kind of realize that now because they've come back a little more mature and a little more committed to what we're trying to do and that's probably why we're a little more successful this year."

Turner and the Knights return to the diamond Thursday afternoon with a home game against Kaimuki before taking on Moanalua under the lights Saturday evening at McKinley.

Male Athlete of the Week: Mackenzee Higuchi, Mid-Pacific baseball
Off the field Mackenzee Higuchi is described by his coach as a quiet kid, but between the lines the Mid-Pacific sophomore has been making a lot of noise with his bat as of late.

Higuchi, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound catcher, is batting .375 from the leadoff spot and is currently on a five-game hit streak entering Tuesday's Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game against No. 3 Iolani at Damon Field.

It was against the then-second ranked Raiders just over the weekend that Higuchi had his most productive day at the plate. He batted 2 for 3 with a home run, double and four runs batted in with one walk to lead the Owls to a big 11-5 win.

"He did a good job," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said. "He did a good job of hitting, moving runners over, he did a good job all around."

That came just two days after Higuchi collected his first multi-hit game by going 2 for 3 with a double, RBI, two runs scored and a walk in a rout of Maryknoll Thursday.

"He works really hard. He'll come and hit early in the morning with the other two sophomores (Bryson Ho and Kennedy Hara) and the freshman (Kodey Shojinaga)," Muramaru said. "They come early in the morning on Saturdays, like six-thirty. He just works hard all the time. It's not like he'll come sometime, he just comes all the time. He's one of those baseball rats."

Higuchi's first at-bat Saturday — a strikeout to lead off the game — was one of his few hiccups that day. The Raiders went on to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning, however, Higuchi drove in the tying run his next time up on a first-pitch sacrifice fly to even the score at 3 in the top of the second inning.

"He works really hard so he'll just make adjustments throughout the game and he's getting pretty good at it," Muramaru said. "For a sophomore kid, he's a pretty advanced hitter."

In the top of the third inning, Higuchi lined a double to drive in another run and extend the Owls' lead to 7-3. He drew a walk in the fifth before wrapping up the day with a two-run home run to left field in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.

"He did that right down the line," Muramaru said of Higuchi's first homer this season. "Mac's home run kind of cemented the game because up until then it was 9-5 and it was real tight. It was touch-and-go the whole game. At our field they would have had five home runs."

Muramaru was beyond pleased to see his team battle back from the early deficit.

"They did a good job that game. Top of the first we hit into a double play after we had runners on first and third, one out, and then they come back, single, walk, three-run homer, so we were down three runs after three batters," Muramaru said. "It would have been easy to say, ‘OK, here we go again,' but we scored four in the second by doing a bunch of stuff — we didn't hit the ball over the fence or stuff, we just had to keep working — but we pulled out all the stops; we even tried to steal home, but there was catcher's interference so the run scored."

As a freshman last season, Higuchi earned All-ILH first team honors as a designated hitter. He caught a few games last season as the primary backup to three-year starter Kyle Layugan, but has taken over the role full-time this year.

"It's just a work in progress. He makes his mistakes — we have to allow him that — but last year, I don't think he understood a lot of things because you gotta have a certain level of expertise before you start understanding what's actually happening, so I think as he plays more, then things start making more sense," Muramaru said. "The things I tell him last year I think would go right over his head and then this year he goes, ‘Oh, now I know what you're talking about,' but it's fun working with him because you can always give him new stuff to learn. He works really hard, so it's easy to teach him the next-level stuff; he's just a sponge to learn."

Of Higuchi's nine hits this season, five have been for extra bases — four of them doubles — including a walk off two-bagger to lift Mid-Pacific to a 5-4 win over PAC-5 two weeks ago. He has registered a walk in six of his team's nine games this season.

"He gets a lot of walks. He's our best hitter, so they don't want to pitch to him and now that he's batting leadoff, he's starting to take advantage of it," Muramaru said.

Just don't expect Higuchi to say much about his recent hot streak — or anything else, for that matter.

"He's very quiet, really quiet. I don't know, sometimes we don't even know what he sounds like," Muramaru quipped. "We're trying to get him to be a little bit more vocal, but it's like pulling teeth. I guess he doesn't feel comfortable yet — he's only a sophomore — but he's gotta be one of those leaders on the team."

Saturday's game marked the first back-to-back win in ILH play for Mid-Pacific (5-4) and the first loss for Iolani (7-1).

"It's huge because we're not experienced at all and so we really don't have that kind of a window to play with, whereas before we could play a little poorly and win," Muramaru said.

Higuchi and the Owls made their first appearance in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings this week at the No. 9 spot. They host Iolani Tuesday and Maryknoll Thursday before taking on Kamehameha Saturday morning at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park.
