Rainbow Warriors fall to CSUN on Senior Night

MANOA — Terrell Gomez blasted a season-high 32 points to lead Cal State Northridge past Hawaii, 73-84, to put a damper on Senior Night in the Rainbow Warriors' home finale of the Big West Conference season.

It was Hawaii's third-straight loss as it fell to 7-7 (16-12 overall) with two road games left before the Big West Tournament in Anaheim, California later this month.

Gomez, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, shot 11 for 21 from the field with five 3-pointers with16 points falling in the final 10 minutes of the game. Redshirt freshman Lamine Diane followed with 25 points and seven rebounds as CSUN improved to 7-7 for its third consecutive win.

Both teams are currently tied with UC Davis at the No. 4 spot in the conference standings.

Rainbow Warrior seniors Brocke Stepteau, Jack Purchase and Sheriff Drammeh played their final home games in front of a Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 6,673 and were honored following the game. All three were a part of the 2015–16 team that won the Big West Conference championship and made it to the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

Purchase, Hawaii's all-time leader in 3-pointers, had a team-high 20 points Saturday night and splashed six more treys to add to his count. Stepteau had 10 points and six rebounds while Drammeh chipped in three points, three boards and three assists off the bench.

Hawaii's three other starters: Drew Buggs, Zigmars Raimo and Eddie Stansbury each finished with double-digit scoring.

The game was all knotted up at 60 with 7:30 left in the game but CSUN managed a slight three-point lead going into the final three and a half minutes before outscoring Hawaii, 12-4, the rest of the way.

The Rainbow Warriors close out the season against UC Davis on March 7 and Cal State Fullerton on March 9.

Hawaii has finished 8-8 in conference each of the past two seasons.

Earlier in the day, the Rainbow Wahine team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 70-55, to improve to 8-6 as seniors Rachel Odumu, Tia Kanoa (Kamehameha '14), Leah Salanoa and Lahni Salanoa celebrated the final home games of their careers.
