KAPOLEI — Nadia Delzer pitched a two-hitter and Campbell squeaked past host Kapolei, 2-0, Saturday in Oahu Interscholastic Association West softball.
The Sabers (2-0) share first place with Mililani (2-0) in a division that is expected to go down to the wire.
"Both teams played tough," Kapolei coach Keoke Behic said. "The West is the best league in the entire state, I think. Whoever makes the least mistakes and gets the timely hits is going to win."
Delzer (2-0) allowed back-to-back sixth-inning singles in her complete-game win. She walked the first batter of the game before retiring 16 of the next 17 batters — one reached on an error in the second but was erased on a double play.
"I think it was just being too tense," Delzer said of the lead-off walk to Tatum Guzman to start the bottom of the first. "So I had to tell myself to relax. Coach Shag (Hermosura) told me to relax."
Delzer engaged former teammate Jade Behic (0-2), who kept the Sabers scoreless through five innings. Jade Behic was charged with two runs and five hits without allowing a walk in going the distance (She transferred from Campbell when her father, Keoke, was named head coach two years ago).
Delzer's outing was crucial for the Sabers, who are awaiting All-Hawaii Second Team pitcher Chloe Sales to get back to form. She apparently was exposed to new pitches in the offseason and lost effectiveness of her forte: the curve.
"Chloe has always been in the mix (to pitch)," Hermosura said. "It's just that I feel that (Sales) is not ready yet. Ever since she came back from Texas, her pitching style has changed. We're trying to get her back; we're giving her more time. Nadia's been productive right now. There will be times when I think and I feel that Chloe will get back on the mound."
If anything, the Sabers are building their pitching depth, which might be beneficial down the road.
"Nadia's a gamer," Hermosura said of her outing. "Nadia will give me everything I call for, whether it's the right pitch, right spot, she'll work hard to get there."
Both pitchers made quick work of the other team, but the difference came in the T6 with Alesia Ranches' triple to right-CF and then coming home on a wild pitch for the game-winning run. pic.twitter.com/FFZSzeCKy6 — Spencer Honda (@SpncerHonda) March 2, 2019

Another change the Sabers have made is moving All-Hawaii outfielder Alesia Ranches from centerfield to shortstop. That move sent Caisha Nunes from short to third to replace Chloe Domingo, who graduated.
"I think I have an outfield now that can protect the infield," Hermosura said. "I've always wanted Alesia at shortstop. Last year, I needed her in the outfield. We did have a good infield, but our outfield was kind of lacking, but now I think we can handle it in the outfield."
Seaerra Fuentes-Arellano has replaced Ranches in centerfield.
After being held to two hits in the first five innings, the Sabers' veterans got to work. Ranches tripled to right-center with one out but was stuck at third when Dyllan Sanay-Shiraishi ran into her bunt in front of the plate for the second out. But on a one-one count to Nunes, Ranches scored on a wild pitch to break the deadlock. Nunes followed with a triple to right-center and scored an insurance run on fleet-footed Jayda Favela's chop single to first.
"It was just a part of adjusting," Ranches said of her team's slow offensive start. "Our team has a kind of hard time adjusting. We take kind of too long and don't start executing till later innings. It was like that (against) Aiea, too. We didn't start hitting till the later innings. That's just us."
Ranches has signed with Iowa State, where she has been recruited as a shortstop.

Kapolei threatened in the bottom of the sixth. With two out, Guzman lined a single to center for the Hurricanes' first hit of the game and went to third on Chasity McKean's line single to right. Jade Behic hit a low liner to the right side where sophomore second baseman Favela made diving stab to end the inning. Favela is the sister of last year's All-Hawaii second baseman Trinity Favela.
"That's another Favela," Hermosura said Jayda in reference to her sisters Elisa and Trinity. "She's young, she a sophomore. She has two more years with us, three with this year. She'll get stronger and she's fast."
Although off to an 0-2 start, coach Behic expects his Hurricanes to be in the mix in the competitive West.
"I was pleased with our team effort," he said. "Coming off the Leilehua game (a 10-4 loss), this is a very positive step forward. Jade pitched well. We just didn't get the timely hitting that (the Sabers) did."
