KAPIOLANI — A big first and third quarter helped Incarnate Word (St. Louis, Missouri) thump Kalani, 70-42, in the opening round of the Iolani Classic at Iolani's Lower Gymnasium Thursday.

The Red Knights advance to the winners' bracket semifinals on Friday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. to face Clovis West (California) after the Eagles throttled Sacred Hearts, 72-30.

"What an opportunity for high school girls to come out to a place like Hawaii to see this beautiful part of the world," Incarnate Word coach Dan Rolfes said.

The Falcons, the top team in the Hawaiian Electric/ScoringLive Power Rankings, took a break from Oahu Interscholastic Association play and will face the Lancers at 3:30 p.m. on the same day.

"The Mainland teams play at a different speed and it was a good experience for the girls," Kalani coach Chi Mok said.

Incarnate Word's three Division I signees scored 51 of the team's 70 points and all players who registered minutes scored at least two points.

6-foot-4 center Rickie Woltman (Purdue) scored a game-high 20 points, grabbed six boards and blocked three shots, and Kiki Britzmann (Belmont) with 12 points and seven rebounds carved up the smaller Falcons in the paint.

"We felt we had a size advantage going to the game. We talked about getting to the rim and exploiting that," Rolfes said.

Marissa Warren, a DePaul signee added 19 points, four steals and got it going in the third quarter shooting a perfect 6 for 6 from the field.

Incarnate Word opened up the first quarter on a 14-0 run led by Woltman and Warren as both players scored in the paint with ease.

The Red Knights' size bothered the smaller Falcons as Kalani shot 3 of 14 (21.4 percent) from the field in the first quarter. Shelby McDaniel's baseline jumper with 3:10 left in the quarter was Kalani's first basket of the game as they trailed, 22-8, after the first quarter.

"We wanted to jump out at them and play with a lot of energy," Rolfes said. "We were sluggish at times, but our start was huge."

"The first quarter, it was the bright lights and it's a Mainland team. They settled down and played their game. We made a run at them a little bit so at least that gives them confidence," Mok said.

Incarnate Word led by as much as 20, but Kalani felt more comfortable with their offense and shot 50 percent from the field (7 of 14) in an 8-2 run to close the first half and outscored the Red Knights 17 to 14.

The Falcons whittled the deficit all the way down to 13 after Hallie Birdsong drained a 3-pointer and trailed, 38-25, at halftime.

"Our game is that we're going to drive to the basket and kick it out for the 3's. We were able to get some layups, but when (Incarnate Word) got back on defense, they were just too tall," Mok said.

"I thought we lost a little bit our intensity, I thought we had a chance to put them away and we let them climb back in," Rolfes said.

Kalena Halunajan led the Falcons with 10 points and scored eight of her points in the quarter to ignite Kalani's run.

Kamalu Kamakawiwoole finished with eight points and seven rebounds, and Kandyce Woods came off the bench to add eight points and six boards.

"Kamalu tried to take it in and their length bothered us. Their length changed their shots a lot more that what she thought they would," Mok said of Kamakawiwoole.

Warren's 13 points helped reclaim the Red Knights' offensive intensity to start the third quarter as she got it going with a jumper and her 3-pointer made Kalani call a full timeout. She used her quick hands as she knocked the ball loose from a Falcons guard bringing it up court and took it in for a layup to make it, 49-30 before Incarnate Word built up its lead by 20 and led 60-34 going into the fourth quarter.

"We let them slip a little bit in the second quarter, but we came out with the same intensity in the third quarter as we did in the first quarter. We changed what we were doing offensively and she attacked the rim a little bit more," Rolfes said of Warren. "They get out and deny so hard, so the driving lanes were open."

The Red Knights outrebounded the Falcons 31 to 21 and shot 56.3 percent from the field (31 of 55). Kalani shot 18 of 51 (35.3 percent) and was 3 for 14 (21.4 percent) behind the arc.
