Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Crusaders, Buffanblu to face off for ILH crown

After three months of prep football, as many as four leagues will crown champions over the weekend.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association will hold its Division I and II title games in a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium. Roosevelt and Kaimuki will take the field first in the D2 final at 5 p.m., with the D1 championship between No. 15 Castle and No. 11 Waipahu to follow.

Over on Hawaii island, Kealakehe and No. 9 Hilo will face off for the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's D1 crown at 7 p.m. Friday at Dr. Francis Wong Stadium. The D2 final between Kamehameha-Hawaii and Konawaena will be held Saturday, 7 p.m. at Julian Yates Field.

Also Saturday, Kapaa can clinch a league title and secure the Kauai Interscholastic Federation's lone state tournament berth in the 6-team D2 field with a win over Waimea. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Hanapepe Ballpark.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu's Open Division will take center stage Saturday night when Saint Louis and Punahou, the top two teams in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, face off in a winner-take-all clash at Aloha Stadium.

Kickoff between the top-ranked Crusaders (8-0 overall, 7-0 league) and second-ranked Buffanblu (7-2) is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Aloha Staidum.

Despite running the table in the Open Division — including a win over Punahou back on Sept. 15 — there is no security blanket for Saint Louis, the two-time defending state champion.

"I think the boys are excited," Crusaders coach Cal Lee said. "They know it's a big game and you win, you keep going. You lose, you wrap it up. I think everybody knows that, so all you can do is just keep practicing, keep getting better and work on the things you need to work on. It's just business as usual because we know what's at stake."

Saint Louis has been feasting on its opposition this season, winning by an average of more than 35 points per game.

Offensively the Crusaders are averaging nearly 48 points each time out. Junior quarterback Jayden de Laura has completed 70.9 percent of his passes (95 of 134) for 1,644 yards. He's thrown 16 touchdowns against six interceptions — but four of those came against the Buffanblu.

Punahou allowed 293 yards on 19-of-32 passing by de Laura in a 35-28 loss, but picked him off four times — twice by Alakai Gilman.

"I can't remember when we played them, but it was a while ago and we made some mistakes, but that's a credit to them," Lee said of the Buffanblu. "They did a real good job playing us. We've made a few mistakes along the season, but you hope that you correct them and do a better job when you play again."

To his credit, de Laura did rush for 84 yards and two second-half touchdowns on 17 carries.

De Laura is just one of the playmakers who have kept Punahou coach Kale Ane busy this week.

"Offensively, they're very explosive. They have the fastest kid in the state (wide receiver Roman Wilson) — and I believe it after I saw him — he's pretty good," said Ane, who also serves as defensive coordinator.

Wilson, who has a runner-up and third-place finish in the 100-meter dash in two track and field state championship meets as a freshman and sophomore, respectively, put his speed to use on an 80-yard TD pass from de Laura in the second quarter against Punahou.

"They do what they do and they don't make any bones about it. We all know what they're gonna do, but they just execute and you have to take your hat off to them," Ane said.

The Crusaders defense has held its last three opponents to single-digit points. It allows an average of just 12 points and 160 yards per game.

"Defensively they're a very physical, aggressive, tough group and again, they make no bones about it: ‘This is what we're gonna line up in and this is what you have to do to beat us,' " Ane said.

Saint Louis is ranked 15th in the USA Today Super 25 national ranking and 10th and 12th, respectively, in MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and Freeman Rankings.

"Any time we play Saint Louis there's intensity and there's something on the line, so I don't think that's anything different. We all know this is where we wanted to be, with an opportunity to get to the state tournament and we're there now," Ane said.

Arguably no team is playing as well as Ane's squad as of late.

The Buffanblu have reeled off four consecutive wins since the seven-point loss to Saint Louis, including shut outs over Waianae (52-0) and No. 6 Kamehameha (35-0) in back-to-back weeks.

"I hope we haven't played our best ball yet, because we're going to have to Saturday, but it's nice to have some momentum from the last few games and I think the kids are understanding what they need to do to be successful as a group and as an individual, so it's really been nice," Ane said.

Punahou is averaging 37 points per game on offense and has been paced by its prolific passing attack, which is averaging nearly 310 yards per contest — tops in the Open Division.

Quarterback Hugh Brady has thrown for 2,316 yards and 26 touchdowns through the air. He has been intercepted 10 times — four of them coming in the game against Saint Louis — but is coming off a pick-free performance against Kamehameha in which he completed 76.2 percent (16 of 21) of his passes.

"(Brady) got to play a little bit last year, but not extensively, and to play the way he has and also (backup QB) Kobe (Muasau) getting some playing time has been nice to see," said Ane, who also noted an increase in production from the run game this season.

The Buffanblu have enjoyed steady production from running backs Vincent Terrell (76 carries-402 yards-3 rush TDs-5.3 yards per rush) and Sitiveni Kaufusi (71-282-4-4.0).

"I think our offensive line and running backs have developed a nice cohesiveness and are playing well. Our receivers we knew they would do well, but they've lived up to the hype and that's nice," Ane said.

Four players have recorded at least 200 receiving yards and four touchdowns this season, led by Tamatoa Falatea's 62 catches for 914 yards and nine TDs.

Defensively the Buffanblu are holding teams to fewer than 18 points and 298 yards per game. They allowed just 103 yards against Waianae and 164 to Kamehameha.

"Defensively we have some great players, but they've managed to come together and play well as a unit," Ane said.

Ane said the loss to the Crusaders six weeks ago was an opportunity to grow.

"When you play a quality team like Saint Louis it gives you a chance to evaluate where you're at and what you need to work on to compete with a team like that, so the game was fairly close, but there's so much more we could do to get better and I think that's the mindset going in, that we didn't play our best game and we can do a lot better, so that's the expectations going into this game. We want to play better," Ane said.

While the Buffanblu will seeking their first ILH championship since 2014 — its last of four straight league titles — the Crusaders will be trying to retain the crown for a fourth consecutive season.

"I think Punahou is a real good, well-coached football team. The kids are playing hard and I know everybody knows this is winner-take-all, so both teams will be playing hard and giving the best they can and may the best team win," Lee said.

The winner of Saturday's game will represent will the top three teams from the OIA in the First Hawaiian Bank Open Division State Championships, which get underway on Nov. 16 at Aloha Stadium.
