Mid-Pacific claimed its first-ever ILH title with a 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23 win over host Damien Thursday night to capture the league's Division II championship.

Kaehu Keala put down a season-high 25 kills with three blocks to power the Owls (13-2) to their 10th consecutive win, which started after straight set losses to defending state champ Le Jardin and Damien earlier in the season.

It was also Mid-Pacific's second straight win over the seventh-ranked Monarchs (13-2), who was previously undefeated until the Owls' 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 win on Tuesday. The win two days ago gave Mid-Pacific the second-round title, which forced a winner-take-all playoff against first round-winner Damien.

"Tuesday, it was all about revenge because that first game we played we got smashed. This one was just blow for blow," said Keala, a 6-foot-3 senior.

"We knew it wasn't really about talent. We knew it was about who was going to work the hardest so we just worked are hardest and we got it."

Keala was the leading attacker for the Owls and hit 0.367 for the match, but she wasn't alone in the offense. Eleven different players attempted an attack for Mid-Pacific, with Emma Porter directing the controls with a season-high 41 assists.

Shyla Sato, a former libero, added seven kills with two aces, Amy Warrington had six kills with three blocks and Kalei Lyons came off bench after opening set to contribute five kills.

The Owls' were also solid defensively with four different players recording double-digit kills. Outside hitter Kamalani Kekoolani had just four kills, but she led the way in the back row with 16 digs. Erin Goya followed with 14 digs, Sato with 12 and libero Alyssa Muraoka rounded out the top passers with 11 digs.

"Every single person was critical. We can't win unless the whole team is involved," said fourth-year Mid-Pacific coach Tommy Lake, who also coached Moanalua to an OIA D2 title in 2009.

With both teams seeking their first league crown in school history, nerves were at an all-time high with a standing-room only crowd cheering on their respective teams. Damien was able to ride the momentum early on while Mid-Pacific stumbled out of the gate with 13 hitting errors in the opening set.

"We had the jitters," said Porter. "The crowd was going crazy so we just had to put that aside and (do) our business."

But in the end, it came down to a battle of attrition and numbers. The Monarchs did not have starting libero Rayne Pactol in the lineup on Tuesday, which forced one of their 6-2 setters in Elsa Radovan to the role two days ago. On Thursday, secondary outside hitter Kaira Wengler played libero and Radovan ran the offense with setter Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai taking swings in the offense.

Things also got bleak in the fourth and final set when Radovan went down with an ankle injury. Middle Cece Fenton also had to briefly leave the game after having an "anxiety attack" according to Damien coach Don Faumuina.

Both Radovan and Fenton was able to return to the main area of the gym after Damien burned back-to-back timeouts with a 20-16 lead in the final set, but nothing could stop fatigue from setting in as Mid-Pacific's last seven points were all on errors by the Monarchs.

"We were dropping like flies," said Faumuina. "That kind of put a kinked in it and we had no other subs. That's all we had. We tried our best to make the adjustments. I just asked the girls to play their best and play their hearts out, and they gave what they gave."

Shelby Capllonch had 20 kills and 14 digs and Kalulu-Sugai had 11 kills with 15 digs and eight assists to lead the Monarchs in the loss.

Both teams will participate in next week's New City Nissan D2 State Championships, which start on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The official brackets have not been released yet, but the Owls will most likely receive a first round bye.
