HALAWA — No. 10 Iolani got back on track with a 30-19 win over No. 12 Damien in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I contest at Hawaiian Financial FCU Field at Aloha Stadium on Saturday.

The Raiders snap a two-game skid to improve to 4-2 overall, 3-1 league.

"It felt pretty good, it felt overdue. We've been working hard the past few weeks just to get back into sync I think we found it this week," Iolani receiver Carter Kamana said.

The Monarchs fall to 3-2 overall, 3-1 in the ILH.

"They did a good job and they are well-coached and made the right plays at the right times. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot," lamented Damien coach Eddie Klaneski.

Iolani had 431 yards of net offense with 219 coming on the ground and 212 through the air. The Raiders had 27 first downs: 14 passing and 13 rushing for the game.

Raider running back Kaua Nishigaya rushed for 230 yards on 40 carries to average 5.75 yards per carry.

"We figured they would run with him. That kid is tough, man," Klaneski said of Nishigaya. "We told the kids all week to wrap him up. He was tough and was driving his legs and took three or four guys and still gained five or so yards."

Jonah Chong threw for 212 yards, no picks, and a touchdown that went to Kamana, who hauled in 12 passes for 141 yards to lead Iolani.

"This week our coaches did a good job implementing new red zone plays and the tight trips and different formations to make sure their defense didn't know what was coming," Kamana said.

Mika Makekau was 3-for-4 from field goals, 3-for-3 on PATs. She made field goals from 26, 44, and 28 yards out. Her 26-yard field goal gave the Raiders an early, 3-0 lead.

The Monarchs took the lead, 6-3 after Chong could not handle a high snap and Fosi Ulima pounced on the fumble. Holtz completed a 53-yard touchdown pass to Lindon Sevilleja, Jr. on a third-and-24, but the kick failed for Damien's only lead of the game.

From there, the Raiders scored 24-consecutive points to pull away.

After Christian Souza missed a 31-yard field goal attempt, Iolani drove 80 yards in a drive that took 16 plays, 4 minutes, 20 seconds that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown from Chong to Kamana for a 10-6 lead going into halftime.

Iolani's second half drive started at their own 10 and got down to the Damien 7. Chong lost 11 yards after Duke Hoohuli's sack. A false start penalty pushed the field goal attempt back five yards, but it was no problem for Makekau as she converted the 44-yard field goal to make it, 13-6.

Souza missed another field goal and Iolani turned it into points with Chong keeping it for a 20-yard score to finish a nine-play, 80 yard drive. The Raiders defense forced a Monarchs'punt and Lanakila Pei returned it 76 yards for a 21-point lead.

"We went into halftime and we needed to make a splash in order to get our mojo back and we came back with a lot of energy to make sure we did well," Kamana said of the third quarter scoring spree.

"We got into a bad spot there and we made mistakes and it rolled on us. We couldn't slow them down and we gave up too many plays here and there," Klaneski said. "That punt return broke the game open for us and if we didn't give it up, we might've had a better chance."

Jake Holtz passed for 288 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for the Monarchs. Two of his passing touchdowns went to Sevilleja, Jr., who caught a team high 121 receiving yards. His third touchdown pass went to Jarvis Natividad for seven yards.

"He did good at times, he's a work in progress for us," Klaneski said of Holtz. "He made some really good throws and sometimes he doesn't. We have a lot of work to do with him and we're glad he has a big arm and can make plays. We missed a few plays early that hurt us."

Damien had 19 first downs for the game, 13 were through the air. The Monarchs were flagged eight times for 80 yards.

"We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. It's tough when we do that. We have to correct it and it's on us. It's difficult when you have to play behind the sticks," Klaneski said of the penalties.

The Raiders host Radford (1-5 overall) in the afternoon sun at Kozuki Stadium on Friday, Sept. 21. Damien travels to face Moanalua (4-0 overall) later on the same night.
