KAILUA — Pearl City scored early and often in a 47-6 rout of Kalaheo Friday night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II football game at Kailua's Alex Kane Stadium.

The Chargers (4-2 overall, 4-0 league) got five takeaways from their defense and used a quick start to pull away from the Mustangs (2-4, 2-2), who dropped their second straight game.

Makana Canyon capped Pearl City's first three drives of the game with touchdown passes in a 20-point first quarter. Canyon threw for 159 yards and fives TDs in all, but completed only 11 of his 23 pass attempts and was intercepted twice.

On the Chargers' third play from scrimmage, Canyon fired a third-down pass over the middle to Thomas King, who got inside of his defensive back and went untouched on the 50-yard touchdown.

The PAT was blocked by Jaden Amasiu, but Kalaheo went three and out on its ensuing possession and four plays later Canyon tossed a 22-yard scoring strike to Stanton Hong down the left sideline. King tacked on the extra point to make it a 13-0 lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter.

Justin Pfau intercepted a Noa Lapera pass to halt the Mustangs' next drive and six plays later, Canyon hooked up with King on an 11-yard slant route on another third down for a touchdown. The scoring play was set-up by Canyon's 19-yard pass to Herbert Hallers to move the chains on third-and-10 three plays prior.

"Offensively we're getting better each week," Pearl City coach Robin Kami said. "In the first quarter we tried to use the wind, so we tried to pass in the first quarter and then the defense gave us some opportunities and we took advantage and scored, so it helped our offense and our confidence for the second half."

King finished with game-highs of six receptions for 102 yards.

About midway through the second quarter, Loi Ulugalu recovered a Kalaheo fumble at the Mustangs' 40-yard line. On the very next play, Hallers ripped off a 31-yard gain on a first-down run and backup quarterback Christian Tielu tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Micah Quillopo-Jamile two plays later to make it 26-0.

Canyon tossed his fourth TD pass of the first half on a 7-yard comeback route to Quillopo-Jamile with 1:30 left in the second quarter.

Kalaheo failed to convert a golden scoring chance on its final possession of the half. Lapera scampered for 64 yards on an option keeper to put the ball at the Pearl City 11-yard line. Bryson Johnson then rushed for a nine-yard gain to set-up second-and-1 at the 2. However, Lapera threw an incomplete pass on the next play and then was sacked for an eight-yard loss by Adonis Aufaga on third down before throwing another incompletion on fourth-and-9 from the 10.

"That was a lot of momentum so we figured we'd put our first team back in there to keep them from gaining some confidence because holding somebody (scoreless) in the first half, it helps," Kami said of the goal line stand.

The Chargers led 32-0 at halftime.

Pookela Moses-Espanto rushed for a team-high 76 yards, most of those coming on a 59-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Mikey Ortiz-Maae closed out the scoring with his 1-yard TD pass from Canyon with four minutes remaining. That possession began at the Mustangs' 25-yard line after Tristen Mckinney recovered Kalaheo's fourth lost fumble of the night near the midpoint of the final quarter.

Pearl City recorded 21 points off of Kalaheo's five turnovers.

Pfau and Brady Faauliuli also recovered fumbles and Sione Siulangapo, Shayden Mcmoore and Blaze Patoc-Konia were in on sacks for the Chargers, who held the Mustangs to 4 of 16 on third-down conversions.

"I think our defense did a great job tonight. They gave us some opportunities to try to get some points," Kami said.

Kalaheo's lone score cut it to 32-6 on Lapera's 19-yard TD pass to Jordan Neufelt with 3:24 left in the third quarter.

Neufelt recorded five catches for 49 yards and Lapera finished 12-of-33 passing for 120 yards and an interception.

Carl Addy rushed for a game-high 85 yards on 16 carries for the Mustangs.

Pearl City has now won four of its last five games and remains tied atop the OIA D2 standings with fellow-unbeaten Kaimuki.

The Chargers have won their last eight meetings against the Mustangs, who were seeking their first win in the series since 2010.

Both teams continue league play next Friday. Pearl City will host Kalani (1-5, 1-3) at Bino Neves Stadium, while Kalaheo will visit Roosevelt (4-1, 2-1) Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
