SALT LAKE — There's just something about playing the Aiea football team that brings out the best in Moanalua's Trequan Henderson.

The senior defensive back scored Na Menehune's last two touchdowns to preserve a 38-26 win for No. 15 Moanalua over visiting Na Alii Friday night in an OIA Division I contest.

When the two teams met in 2017, Henderson recorded four picks — which included a game-sealing interception in the end zone with no time remaining to give Na Menehune a 31-27 win. He had just one interception in the rematch, but he made it count, taking it back 88 yards to the end zone for Moanalua's last score of the night with two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Henderson also scored on a 85-yard kickoff return in the third quarter to swing momentum back on Na Menehune's side after giving up a fumble recovery for a score.

"Trequan is a game changer, he's definitely a game changer," Moanalua coach Savaii Eselu said of Henderson. "We like to try and ride that as long as we can, in terms of his effort, his tenacity...but nothing short of amazing as always with him."

Henderson was quick to defer credit, and for good reason. Moanalua's win was a true team effort as Na Menehune (2-0 OIA D1) got two passing TDs, two defensive scores, a field goal and a special teams TD in the win.

"It was a whole team effort, it took offense and defense coming together in order for us to win this game," he said.

For visiting Aiea (1-1-1 overall, 1-1 OIA D1), the valiant effort against Moanalua was a positive for Na Alii coach Wendell Say. Aiea trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but kept fighting with its 24 players that was suited up.

"It's probably going to be that way the whole season," said Say. "Our kids fought hard, they didn't give up, that's the main thing. I'm proud of them. All of them played hard, they did what we asked of them. We came out on the short end, but opportunities were there."

Aiea quarterback Kayson Castillo and receiver Zacharia Kalahiki-Basque — who both entered the game leading the state in passing and receiving yards respectively — was a big reason why Na Alii was able to make it competitive after a slow start.

The duo hooked up four times for 124 yards and three TDs, with their final connection being a 10-yard scoring strike to make it a 31-26 game with 1:36 to play in the third quarter.

Things took a turn for the worse early in the fourth quarter however when Castillo was sacked for the first time of the game by Micah Kim. Castillo was shaken up on the play and had to leave for three plays. When he did get back into the game, Castillo was picked off by Aukai Grace in the end zone with 9:20 left in regulation.

Castillo never returned after that and WR/DB Fabian Bautista handled quarterback duties the rest of the way. Say said that Castillo's initial injury may have been to the shoulder, but added that Castillo was displaying concussion like symptoms after his final pass of the night.

"Our success is going to depend on us staying healthy," Say said "It's going to be a battle every week."

Luke Palalay got Moanalua on the board on Na Menehune's first drive of the game with a 31-yard field goal that capped a series that lasted for about 7 1/2 minutes.

After a Keanu Kekawa picked off Castillo on Aiea's very next play, Nick Au found a wide-open Ezra Grace down the left sideline for a 25-yard TD pass.

Kalahiki-Basque got a 30-yard TD pass to get Aiea on the board with 4:47 in the second quarter, but Moanalua came right back with Au's 3-yard scoring strike to CJ Paleafei, who finished with a game-high 10 receptions for 124 yards.

Castillo's second passing TD of the night went for a 48-yard strike to Kalahiki-Basque to make it a 17-13 game at the break.

Buffalo Kruize III recovered a bad Aiea snap in the end zone for the first Moanalua score of the second half. Austin Mogote returned a fumble 65 yards for Aiea's first TD of the third quarter, but Henderson came right with his 85-yard kickoff return for a score.

Both teams were whistled for multiple penalties with a combined 26 fouls for 230 yards.
