Sales, Hoopii-Tuionetoa sparked title runs

Female Athlete of the Week: Chloe Sales, Campbell softball
Before joining the Campbell softball team as a freshman last year, Chloe Sales paid close attention to its long line of top tier pitchers. She followed closely the careers of former aces Summer Palipti and Elisa Favela before getting a first-hand look at Danielle Cervantes — the reigning All-Hawaii Division I Pitcher of the Year — as her back-up last season.

Despite a string of three consecutive state championships for the Sabers, Sales — now in the role of ace herself — led them to their first league championship in five seasons by going 3-0 last week. Sales, a 5-foot-4 left-handed sophomore, logged victories over No. 6 Mililani, No. 3 Kapolei and No. 9 Roosevelt on back-to-back-to-back days to help top-ranked Campbell to its sixth overall Oahu Interscholastic Association crown.

"Chloe has been a hard worker and she knows as a program what we've done in the past, but she's not trying to be there — she's helping the team be there — and she works hard at it," Sabers coach Michael Hermosura said.

In Thursday's 11-1 six-inning win over the Trojans, Sales allowed four hits and one walk. She followed that up with another one-hit gem with one walk and a strikeout in Friday's 11-1 five-inning win over the Hurricanes before closing out the week by gutting out a 6-3 win over the Rough Riders in Saturday's championship game. Sales surrendered one earned run on eight hits with one walk.

"She hit her spots, especially on the outside with that back-door curve and now and then we snuck inside, but her change-ups — whether it was good or bad — it gave the hitters a different look," Hermosura said of Sales, who throws a fastball, rise ball, change-up and two types of curve balls.

"The change-up has been a big factor. It keeps batters on their toes and she's learned to have more command with her pitches. She's worked hard to try and improve in her pitching."

Sales got off to a rough start this season. She was tagged for 10 runs — all of them earned — on 16 hits with five walks in four innings of relief in a season-opening 11-run loss to Leilehua back on Feb. 28.

However, she has pitched every innings of Campbell's last six games — all of them wins — and is 9-1 on the season with one save and an earned run average of 3.23.

"She's become more consistent as the season has gone on," Hermosura said. "I call the pitches and she'll throw it to the spots and do a good job of changing hitters' eyes. She's learned to change speeds and throw the pitch I want and like every pitcher I've worked with, they work hard."

While Sales may not have the same overpowering stuff that her predecessor Cervantes had, she makes up for it in craftiness.

"She knows that she has a good defense behind her and hopefully we can support her and she can bear down and get hitters to hit ground balls. Strikeouts are a plus, but she is more of a fly ball, ground ball pitcher right now," Hermosura said.

Still, Sales has drawn upon some of the traits that all three former Campbell pitchers possessed.

"She saw Palipti when she was younger and of course she watched Favela and Cervantes and the focus they each had on the mound, at the same time having fun and working hard and helping the team," Hermosura said. "When she first came she was all over the place and lacked confidence, but now she's got confidence and she's got seven players behind her and Dyllan (Sanay-Shiraishi) has controlled her real well from behind the plate and kept her in tune."

Campbell has won its last seven games heading into next week's DataHouse State Championships.

"That win was good for our confidence that they can do the job and it's just a big boost for us for states. There's no ‘I' in team and everybody is playing together as one," Hermosura said.

Sales and the Sabers will have a first-round bye. They will start play in the 12-team tournament on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Male Athlete of the Week: Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa, Baldwin baseball
Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa may not have had his best stuff on the mound Saturday, but the Baldwin senior pieced together another solid outing and the result was the program's ninth consecutive league title.

Hoopii-Tuionetoa, whose nickname is "Bubba," logged a complete game four-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks to lead the top-ranked Bears to a 5-1 win over No. 9 Kamehameha-Maui in the Maui Interscholastic League second round Division I final at Wailuku's Iron Maehara Stadium.

"He had some tightness about a week and a half ago behind his shoulder and I think it bothered him so I really think he didn't want to let it loose against Kamehameha," Baldwin coach Shane Dudoit said said of Hoopii-Tuionetoa, who also batted 2 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored in the win.

"He didn't have his best stuff. He was topping out around 88 to 89 (miles per hour) and he sat at about 86 throughout the game, but he was able to get ground balls. He gave up a few walks but he was also able to come back in three-ball counts to get ground balls, fly balls," Dudoit said.

Hoopii-Tuionetoa, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander, has put together a 5-0 record and has yet to allow an earned run this season. Through 30 innings of work, he has surrendered only seven hits with 36 strikeouts to nine walks.

Dudoit said a big factor in Hoopii-Tuionetoa's success has been his ability to keep his fastball — which has been clocked in the low 90s — down in the strike zone.

"His fastball will usually sit around 90 and it's low in the zone so he's able to get a lot of ground balls," Dudoit said. "Against Kamehameha he was able to get guys out with the fastball. I think he maybe threw a few curveballs, but a good percentage of it was fastballs middle in and down and if he did miss up, the batters weren't able to put it out of the park so we those fly balls as well."

In addition to his fastball, Hoopii-Tuionetoa possesses a splitter, curve, slider and change-up in his arsenal. It may come as a surprise that he hasn't seen much time on the mound for the Bears until this year.

"His sophomore year he was at third base and then last year he was in centerfield, but even as a sophomore he was on the team but not in the pitching rotation and last year he might have came in to close some games that were probably blown out anyway, but we thought we were OK with the guys we had," Dudoit said. "During the fall when I started to get velocities on these guys, he started to light up the (radar) gun and I thought, ‘we gotta get this guy on the mound,' " Dudoit said.

Hoopii-Tuionetoa, who is batting .276 and plays centerfield when he's not pitching, has drawn heavy interest from professional scouts, who have told him he could be taken anywhere from the 10th to 18th rounds in June's MLB Amateur Draft.

"He's a very natural athlete and his swing has come a long way," Dudoit said. "He's been able to get some clutch hits for us. He's just quick and strong and he's a very composed kid. He doesn't let anything get to him. If he needs to, he will take his time, walk around the mound to relax, refocus and get back up there."

Dudoit said Hoopii-Tuionetoa brings a quiet leadership to a team deep in experience.

"I think he does a lot for our team as far as confidence because he'll be in a tough situation on the mound and he'll look back at his guys and say, ‘don't worry, I got this,' " Dudoit said. "From a leadership and composure aspect, that's they guy you want on the mound when the game is on the line and he knows he's got eight guys behind him that will back him up. On top of all that, he's just a very good kid who comes from a very good family."

Hoopii-Tuionetoa and the Bears (13-1) will have a first-round bye in next week's Wally Yonamine Foundation State Championships. They open play in the 12-team tournament Wednesday at Les Murakami Stadium.
