Attitude, communication and effort — the winning formula in Pearl City's first Oahu Interscholastic Association championship run since 2002.
The Chargers captured their 11th league title in school history with a straight set win over Kalani, 25-20, 25-14, 26-24, in the OIA Division II title match Wednesday night at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.
"It's a great feeling," said Pearl City coach Sean Chang. "It's a great reward for them, they put in a lot of work these past years.
"We talk about what we call our 'ACE', our attitude, our communication and our effort. We always say if we want success, we have to have good 'ACE,' and tonight from the start we had it."
Jeremiah Perifanos-Taamu did his thing with 16 kills, 17 digs, two aces and Zion Tupuola-Fetui was solid with 11 kills and 11 digs, but it was the contributions of the Chargers' role players that took them to another level against the Falcons.
Sonny Tofi added five kills and 12 digs as a secondary outside hitter and Mason Passi had three kills from the middle in a dominating second set. Setter Cameron Reimer also racked up 34 assists, 10 digs, four kills and four aces, libero Eric Schlitzkus managed a kill with 14 digs and Seth Sugimoto had his hand in two blocks.
"We always talk about being more of a spread-out offense," said Chang. "I know a lot of times we tend to go to our big outside hitters, but if we want success, once we hit the higher-level teams, we're going to have to be more spread out in terms of our offense."
Pearl City was in control for the first two sets, but faced a deficit for most of the third stanza. The Falcons led by as many as six, 20-14, in the final period of play before the Chargers started their comeback.
Kills by Tofi and Reimer cut the lead to four and a pair of hitting errors by Kalani eventually made it a 21-19 game.
After Kai Anderson put down a kill to push the Falcons up by three, the Chargers went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set since leading 3-0 to start the frame.
But Kalani, who was seeking its first-ever OIA title, would not go down quietly. A solo block by Seth Tina-Soberano tied the game at 23 and a kill by Leimana Naki gave the Falcons a 24-23 lead.
Instead of folding however, the Chargers remained positive and scored the final three points of the match. Perifanos-Taamu had a hand in back-to-back blocks and a hitting error sealed the deal in Pearl City's first title in 16 years.
"I was just encouraging them (in the moment)," Perfianos-Taamu said on the message in the crunch. "There's nothing else you can say but to lift them up because if not, we're going to be down (emotionally) the whole time, but definitely positivity won us this game."
It also helped that the Chargers had experience playing in tight games during the year, losing four three-set matches during the regular season.
"It really gave us this drive to find success later on," said Chang.
Keoni Thiim had 12 kills and nine digs to lead the Falcons in the loss.
Both teams will represent the OIA in the New City Nissan Boys Volleyball Championships next week. The Division II start tournament starts at Thursday, May 3.
