EWA BEACH — Chloe Domingo made Senior Day one to remember.

The senior third baseman's walk-off single helped fourth-ranked Campbell topple top-ranked Leilehua, 6-5, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West contest at the Sabers' field on Tuesday.

"I didn't think I was going to get to," said Domingo on her late-game heroics. "I was like, 'Come guys, we can't get three outs, we have to get on.'"

The Sabers win their second game in a row to improve to 7-3. The Mules, who beat No. 2 Kapolei, 8-4, on Monday, fell to 6-3. Leilehua won the league opener, 16-5, in six innings back on Feb. 28, but today was far different.

"They really kicked our butts the first time and coming off of Kapolei's game and they had momentum going for themselves," said Campbell coach Shag Hermosura. "I thought it was going to be a battle."

A battle it was.

Trailing in the bottom of the seventh, 5-4, the Sabers took advantage of consecutive Mules errors. Trinity Favela reached on Lovey Kepaa's error and moved to third after Kamryn Kamakaiwi scooped up Alesia Ranches' bunt, but it sailed past first base. Leilehua made a pitching change, bringing in Alyssa Abe with no outs and runners on second and third. The umpire called an illegal pitch on Abe that brought in Favela for a run and Ranches advanced to third.

"She has been the pitcher that follows Kaena or Kamryn," said Leilehua coach Wendell Au, on Abe. "They compliment each other and it was a good setup. Unfortunately, it was a good hit on their behalf and an illegal pitch. That's how it falls."

"When opportunities knock, we have to capitalize on it. Fortunately we did," said Hermosura.

Abe needed six pitches to strike out Anastasia Iosia, but Domingo hit an 0-1 pitch into right field to win the game.

"I saw it was a little bit outside, but I knew I had to hit it to the outfield since it was one out and I had to drive in runs," said Domingo, on her hit.

Kamakaiwi pitched six innings and of the six Saber runs, one was earned as she was charged with the loss.

"She was good, but wasn't as effective as she was yesterday. I figured they had a lot of righties, so her backdoor curve or her screw ball would go away from the batters. I thought the matchup was favorable. It started off slow but picked up steam and the back-half got real tight, so the move to Alyssa wasn't too far fetched," Au said of Kamakaiwi.

For Domingo, it was redemption as she overcame a pair of fielding errors in the sixth and seventh innings.

"This is a big confidence boost for her. She hasn't really been hitting like how she did last year. It's a confidence boost for her and the season is still young and she's going to come around. She came back with a double play and with the winning run and I'm proud of her," said Hermosura, on Domingo.

The Mules plated eight runs on 11 hits against a solid Hurricane squad that caused concern for Hermosura. Brandi Leong led off with a walk and Kai Pinera's bunt beat the throw as Kamakaiwi and Gigi Araki followed up with RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.

"Yesterday we were pretty hot and today they turned in three double plays," said Au.

Campbell scored on a run as Favela drew a lead-off walk and Ranches singled to shallow left. Kamakaiwi walked Iosia to load the bases, but Domingo's fielder's choice brought in Favela, and Dyllan Sanay-Shiraishi popped out to third. Zoie Recolan singled, but Kamakaiwi forced Jaelyn Myers to fly out to center to end the threat.

The Sabers took the lead after Tommi Angelo-Kukar and Caisha Nunes singled and would score on an error in right field and a wild pitch to make it, 3-2.

Leong led off with a single and beat the throw from short then scored off of Kamakaiwi's high single to left field that dropped just inside the foul line. Araki hit another single to left field and she and Kayla Hale scored off of Alyssa Asuncion's shot to left field that Myers couldn't handle for the Mules' last runs of the game. Shea Tammarine grounded out into a double play that ended the inning.

Recolan hit her second single of the game and scored on an error on the short stop to bring Campbell within a run. The Mules and Sabers shut each other down for the next three innings with strong fielding to set up a make-or-break seventh inning.

"Games and championships are won by defense. I told them, 'You have to believe in yourself that what we do in practice is going to happen in games and put it into effect,'" said Hermosura.

Chloe Sales pitched a complete game to allow three hits but struck out three and walked one in the win.

The Sabers infield backed up Sales by converting double plays in the first, third and sixth innings that wiped out Leilehua opportunities.

"Those were very big for us," Domingo said. "We have been working on our defense and it was great to see that it paid off."

"I'm glad the seniors clutched up. Those were all seniors," Hermosura said of the double plays. "They played well defensively. For the seniors, I'm happy for them."

Kylee Ancheta-Maeda lined out to first and Leong reached on Domingo's second fielding error, but was tagged out on Gwen Maeha's fielder's choice. Kamakaiwi grounded to second for the third out as Campbell headed into the bottom of the seventh with newfound confidence.

Leilehua will play make-up games against Pearl City and Mililani.

Campbell closes out the regular season with No. 3 Mililani (5-4) on April 12 at McKinley.

This game was originally tabbed as our ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week on March 24, but the game was postponed three times until today.
