Female Athlete of the Week: Alohilani Napalapalai, Waianae softballIn less than one full varsity season of softball, Alohilani Napalapalai has come a long way.
The statistics reflect just how much the Waianae freshman pitcher has matured through her team's first nine games this year.
After a debut that saw her give up nine runs — six of them earned — on 13 hits in a five-inning loss to Leilehua to open the season, things came full circle for Napalapalai Thursday afternoon. The 5-foot-8 right-hander posted a masterful one-hit shutout to lead the Seariders to a 5-0 win over three-time defending state champion Campbell Thursday afternoon.
"She was working hard during the week and that game she was just hitting her spots," Waianae coach Robert Kalaola said.
Napalapalai needed just 68 pitches in her complete-game effort. She threw 46 of them for strikes and registered first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 24 batter she faced.
"Campbell is a very tough hitting team and they were hitting her ball, but it was one of those days where the ball bounces our way," Kalaola said. "They were hitting ‘em in the air a lot, but she just kept hitting her spots."
The Sabers flied out 12 times and grounded out five times. Napalapalai struck out two batters and walked one. However, things got off to a dubious start.
Napalapalai hit the leadoff batter, Trinity Favela, with her third pitch of the game. After Alesia Ranches reached on a fielder's choice to erase Favela, Napalapalai found her rhythm and retired a string of 15 consecutive Sabers.
"She did a good job of settling down and she had confidence in what she was throwing and she believed in her defense," Kalaola said.
The Seariders turned in an error-free game behind Napalapalai, who had a no-hitter going after six innings. Campbell's only hit was Dyllan Sanay-Shiraishi's leadoff single in the top of the seventh. However, Napalapalai — who also drove in a pair of runs with her two-out single that was part of a five-run Waianae first inning — set down the next three batters to seal the victory and snap her team's four-game losing streak.
"It was a big win for us. I'm not sure when the last time Waianae beat Campbell, maybe 2012?," Kalaola said. "They're the defending champs so it was a big boost for the girls and hopefully we can carry that momentum going forward."
Any success for Waianae going forward will undoubtedly hinge heavily on their freshman pitcher.
"Waianae never did have a pitcher; we always depended on our hitting and our defense, so she's a big asset to the team and the community. Everybody wanted her to play and stay in Waianae and she's fit right in with these girls," Kalaola said.
Napalapalai, who is 2-5 on the season with a 3.61 earned run average, has had little choice but to grow up quickly on a roster that, aside from her, consists of eight seniors and 10 juniors.
"Earlier in the season she did try to overpower hitters, but now she's kind of learned to come with a different ball to throw to mix it up, but she's still a freshman and she's learning but she's learning quick and giving her hundred percent, so that's all we can ask for," Kalaola said.
Kalaola said Napalapalai's repertoire consists of five pitches, all of which have come in handy at one time or another this year.
"It's hard to say which pitch of hers is her best pitch because different pitches work for different teams, so I cannot really say which one is her best pitch. I would like to say her screw ball, but then again she's getting more confident with her other pitches that were working against Campbell," said Kalaola, who added that Napalapalai's change-up is her most improved pitch.
Napalapalai has allowed 20 earned runs on 51 hits in 52 1/3 innings — the third most innings by a pitcher this season.
"From the start of the year she's been very easy to coach, always well-manngered and just a hard worker. She's very poised and continuing to mature throughout the season," Kalaola said. "I think she's very inspirational and she's got a great future ahead of her if she stays healthy."
Napalapalai pitched all nine innings in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to No. 2 Kapolei. She allowed two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
The Seariders (4-7) conclude their 12-game Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West schedule with a home game against fifth-ranked Pearl City Thursday afternoon.
Male Athlete of the Week: Zach Alcos, Saint Francis baseballFor Saint Francis baseball coach Kip Akana, it seems like just yesterday that Zach Alcos was a wide-eyed freshman on the varsity squad.
Fast forward four years and Alcos, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, has well established himself as a pillar on the diamond for the Saints. It seemed only fitting then, that the four-year started played a key role in one of the program's biggest wins to date last week.
Alcos drove in a pair of runs with his first-inning triple to help Saint Francis come away with a monumental 5-0 upset of perennial Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball powerhouse, Mid-Pacific, at Damon Field Tuesday afternoon.
It was the second win over a Division-I opponent this season for the Division-II Saints. They also defeated Saint Louis earlier this year.
"That was a big game for us. We are a D2 program that's been in place for maybe six or seven years, so getting a chance to play against one of the top teams in the state on that day was a great opportunity and that's what we talked to our kids about, is all we want (are) opportunities and what we do with each opportunity falls upon us and we gotta live with it," Akana said.
The loss snapped Mid-Pacific's four-game win streak and was just its second defeat this season.
The Saints recorded six hits by six different players, including three extra-base hits to back a complete-game five-hit shutout by junior pitcher Kiyo Perry, who walked three and struck out three in 94 pitches.
"That day I think we turned four inning-ending double plays — we almost had five — but Kiyo threw a good game," Akana said.
Alcos and the offense gave Perry a five-run cushion before the 6-foot-2 junior even took the mound against the Owls.
After Makana Poole and JP Tilley led off the game with back-to-back walks, the right-handed Alcos hit a 1-1 offering from Mid-Pacific starter Kyle Layugan into the gap in right center to plate both base runners. Alcos eventually scored on an error as Saint Francis sent nine batters to the plate in the inning.
"He got us on the board with that hit, but he's been doing that," Akana said of Alcos, who typically bats third in the order.
"He's been in several key situations and he's delivered on so many of them this year that you almost expect him to deliver. He's worked hard on his approach and it's showing. Whether it be starting rallies or driving guys in, he's been on both ends of it, just clutching up for us."
The numbers back up Akana's claim: Alcos' 18 runs batted in this season is tops in all of D2 statewide. He also leads the state with four triples and ranks ninth in batting average with a team-best mark of .467. Alcos and teammate Bubba Akana are tied for the team-lead with 14 hits apiece.
"It's been good to watch him grow. He came in as a young kid as a freshman and got to watch how the seniors and the leaders of the team handled it and I think starting last year — because our team was young last year and we're still relatively young — Zach saw what his role would be," Akana said. "He's watched different styles of leadership, but this year is his year and he's put his own blend of leadership on the team. Being one of three seniors, knowing that he's playing on a relatively young team, his leadership is important and he's not only done it that off the field, but he's primarily done it for us on the field with his pitching, defense and hitting."
Alcos followed up his two-RBI day Tuesday with his best pitching performance of the season Saturday. He allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout in 7 2/3 innings pitched against Punahou Saturday, but Saint Francis came up short in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings.
"Saturday against Punahou he didn't have his best stuff," Akana said. "He has a good curve, he has a good change-up and a decent fastball, but none of them seemed to be working like how we expected to see those pitches, but he just kept grinding, kept guys off balance — unfortunately he had to go deep in counts — but to give up two runs to one of the best teams in the state while not having your best stuff, that's a testament to him."
Alcos, who is committed to play collegiately at Saint Martin's University (Lacey, Wash.), spent most of his time on defense last season at second base, but was more than willing to move over to third base this year when circumstances necessitated it.
"With some injuries in this season, he was the first guy to volunteer and say, ‘I'll do it, coach,' just the same way he's been doing it when he was a freshman. He unselfishly went with it and gave it his best," Akana said. "Zach is definitely providing that senior leadership that we're looking for. When we removed him from that Punahou game this past Saturday due to the pitch count, I think even some Punahou fans applauded his effort. He's come through for us in many ways and we're hoping he can keep it going."
Alcos and the Saints (7-3) hold a one-game lead over defending league champion Damien in the ILH D2 standings. They conclude the 13-game first-round schedule with games against No. 5 Iolani Wednesday, No. 6 Kamehameha Saturday before wrapping up with PAC-5 (2-11) Monday.
