ALIAMANU — Jack Dillon drove in two runs in a four-run second inning to back his six strong innings on a muddy mound as Radford held off Farrington, 6-3, on a rainy Saturday at Donald Kimura Baseball Field.

With the win, the Rams (8-0) remain on top of the Oahu Interscholastic Associaton Division II standings. They are 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Waianae (6-1) and two over third-place Farrington (6-2). The Rams will play Waianae 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hans L'Orange Park and will play Farrington 11 a.m. Saturday at Joey DeSa Field before closing out regular-season play against Kaimuki.

"It's still a long ways to go," Radford coach Jacob Sur said. "We got Waianae Wednesday and we got Farrington again Saturday, but we're not looking past Waianae. They're definitely a very tough team."

Dillon (3-0) allowed season-highs in runs (3) and walks (5), while scattering two singles and striking out 10. He threw 114 pitches (he is allowed to exceed the daily limit of 110 if he is in mid-count to a batter). Tommy Tereschuck pitched a perfect seventh for his first save of the season.

The right-handed Dillon, who no-hit Farrington last season at Hans L'Orange Park, had held the Governors hitless through three innings. But freshman catcher Kamalu Sanchez led off the fourth with a ground single to center. He had all of Farrington's hits on the day, the other being an RBI single.

"Some of the guys were kind of reminding me of (the no-hitter from last year)," Dillon said. "But I tried to keep it out because when you try to live up to something that's pretty hard to achieve, it messes with you, so I just try to go out there, throw strikes, execute all my pitches."

The five walks he allowed were uncharacteristic of Dillon, who allowed only two in his previous 12 1/3 innings pitched. The muddy mound and wet baseball didn't help either.

"It's tough," Sur said. "He didn't have all his stuff because he couldn't drive off the mound like that. But he did an awesome job. He's consistent."

Dillon added that the baseball weighed differently at times depending on the moisture on it.

"Both us and (Farrington) did a good job of dealing with the elements," said Dillon, who is headed to the Air Force Academy after graduation.

After Sanchez's single broke up the no-hitter, coutesy runner Shayden Fujimoto took second when Caleb Sherman was hit by a pitch. The runners advanced on Dillon's wild pitch. But Dillon struck out Randy Wong and retired Reese Shioji on an RBI ground out to second and got Jayden Soriana to pop out to third.

Dillon labored in a 35-ptich fifth inning, when he walked three batters to load the bases and gave up Sanchez's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Sherman.

For the Governors, their downfall has been one bad inning. In their 9-7 loss to Waianae on Wednesday, they lost a 4-2 lead when the Seariders scored four in the fourth. Against Radford, a four-run second put them in a hole against Dillon.

"It's been like this in all the games in Arizona and Waianae," Farrington coach Eric Tokunaga said. "Jack (Dillon) is a tough pitcher. You cannot fall behind, 4-0."

Tokunaga was referring to his team's trip to Arizona over spring break.

After tossing a perfect first inning, Governors' starting pitcher Trey Kaawa (2-1) struggled to find the strike zone with two out and a runner at first. After hitting Carter Ogino with a pitch, Kaawa walked DJ Kabua and Michael Guana to force home the first run of the game. Dilllon's two-run single made it 3-0 and chased Kaawa for Treven Isobe, whose wild pitch scored Guana, before getting out of the inning.

Each team scored a run in the fourth to keep Radford's lead at four runs. Farrington closed to 5-3 with its two-run fifth, but Radford insured its lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth on Matthew Lukin's RBI double.

The game began with thunder and with both starting pitchers throwing perfect first innings. Rain started falling in the second inning and never stopped. The game was stopped about 10 minutes before the bottom of the third inning for field maintenance.

The rain was no issue for both teams, especially for Radford. The Rams also traveled during spring break, playing in Washington state, where it hailed and rained, Dillon said.

"On the mainland, it was a lot colder," Dillon said. "Thirty degrees colder; there's also turf on the mainland. But it definitely helped (having played in the rain in Washington). We knew how to deal with this, we played in it before, so everybody really stepped up and did a good job with it."

Farrington has three consecutive home games to close out the regular season. The Govs play Kaimuki on Wednesday, have a rematch with Radford next Saturday and close out April 11 against Nanakuli.
