Female Athlete of the Week: Tiari Hernandez, Pearl City softball
At first, the move to varsity softball was a little overwhelming for Pearl City's Tiari Hernandez.

Hernandez, a 5-foot-7 freshman corner infielder, excelled during the JV season over the winter, but largely struggled during the varsity preseason last month, but she busted out of her slump in a big way Saturday.

In the Chargers' 12-7 win over then-No. 3 Kapolei, Hernandez batted 3 for 4 with three singles from the clean-up spot. She came in to score each time and also drove in three runs and stole a base for good measure in the victory.

"It was a good start. She's starting to swing the bat the way we expected her to swing the bat. It took her a while, but I think she's finally understanding that she doesn't have to do more than what she is and that she is good enough, Pearl City coach Chad Obara said.

The Chargers actually trailed early on after Kapolei scored a pair of first-inning runs. However, they stormed back with nine runs in the bottom of the second, including a bases-clearing single by Hernandez on an 0-2 offering from Hurricanes' pitcher Cira Bartolotti.

"If I recall correctly, she fell behind in the count and I remember her looking up at the clouds and then I knew she was going to be okay," Obara said. "She used that as a coping mechanism and she's done it before, so once I saw her do that I knew she was in a good place mentally and she put a good swing on that pitch and it ended up working out for her."

Obara said it's a trick Hernandez developed back before the start of league play.

"During the JV season she was lights out, but once it became varsity she struggled a lot in the preseason and so we've been having a lot of conversations as far as what's going on in her head, what kinds of things she can do when she's dealing with (tough) situations and when she's feeling some anxiety and stuff like that and she's been receptive to everything we've told her and she's found something that works for her," Obara said.

Obara said Hernandez's preseason struggles got to a point where it was more of a mental obstacle than a physical one.

"I think she was feeling like she had to do more than what she usually does and what she proved she can do in the JV season," he said. "She struggled the whole preseason, swinging at pitches over her head, in the dirt, super early. She was just mentally overmatched and then we told her that we'll take it slow, get her some at-bats here and there and gradually work her way up."

Hernandez came off the bench in pinch-hit situations in each of Pearl City's first two games, but she showed enough in a 9-3 loss against top-ranked Leilehua last Tuesday to earn the starting nod Saturday.

"I was impressed with the way she was able to stay calm and not let the moment overwhelm her," Obara said. "She's not letting the results drive her right now so as long as she keeps doing that, I think you'll be talking about her a lot more."

Obara feels that Hernandez, one of six freshman on his team, has a chance to become a special player in due time.

"Her work ethic is undeniable. She's always putting everything that she can into every rep," Obara said. "Every opportunity she gets she's putting maximum effort and focus both mentally and physically — and that's all the time — plus she's a good teammate and she's one of the biggest jokesters on the team, so she brings a good balance to the team as a freshman, which makes it that much more impressive."

You won't likely find Hernandez boasting much about her exploits, however.

"She's extremely humble, to the point where she might be too humble, like she does not realize how good she is, but if she figures that out, watch out," Obara said. "I'm not so worried about her getting overly confidence because of her extreme humility. Again, sometimes I think she's too humble, but I think she's doing things for the right reasons and hopefully it will help her gain at least some confidence in herself, which I think is going to happen anyway."

Pearl City is in the midst of replacing six starters from a season ago, but this year's team isn't so much interesting in filling their shoes as they are in blazing their own trail.

"I think this team has a good understand of how competitive the state is right now and I think they've set a good goal for themselves, which is just controlling what they can control — their effort — and just making sure they put in maximum effort and letting the results take care of themselves and I kind of like that goal for this team," Obara said. "That's all we ask of them and that's all we're asking of each other and we'll see how that goes. It's hard to replace six starters so we didn't want to make it too overwhelming for all of them so we're just trying to keep it as achievable as possible."

Hernandez batted 2 for 4 with an RBI in a 5-4 loss to three-time defending state champion Campbell Tuesday.

The Chargers (2-2), ranked third in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Softball Power Rankings, will host Waianae at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Male Athlete of the Week: Cole Kashimoto, Saint Louis baseball
Cole Kashimoto has gotten off to a torrid start this baseball season.

Through his team's first five games in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play, the Saint Louis junior has collected a state-best 10 hits and boasts a gaudy .556 batting average.

Kashimoto, who bats left-and throws right, has notched a base hit in every game this season for the Crusaders, including an impressive 4-for-4 day in Friday's 6-5 win in extra innings over third-ranked Mid-Pacific at Mike Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai. The left fielder and leadoff hitter was a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

"That was an unbelievable game in terms of our emotions," Saint Louis coach George Gusman, whose team overcame six errors to twice rally from a one-run deficit in the late innings.

"Our pitchers were pitching well and we were not playing well defensively. We gave them probably about four runs that were two-out ground balls, (but) the guys rallied and stayed composed, so that was really nice to see."

The Crusaders were down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, trailing the Owls, 4-3, with Kashimoto at bat.

"He had two strikes on him and he hits a line drive into left-center for a triple that scored Douglas Cabinatan and tied the game for us," Gusman recalled.

Kashimoto, who Gusman calls "the ultimate competitor," also doubled and stole a pair of bases earlier in the contest.

"It's more than just that game, I think. That game is kind of a microcosm of where Cole is. If you have guys like him that can compete, you're going to be in a lot of games," Gusman said.

The key for Kashimoto has been harnessing his competitive nature.

"He's so competitive that we've tried to work really hard to not getting to that 10," Gusman said. "He operates on a playing level of a seven with his competitiveness and he's so much more dangerous when he stays at that level. He's been working really, really hard at doing that and I think what you are seeing at the fruits of his maturity and just understanding that baseball is not an easy game. You can go 4 for 4 one day and then you can 0 for 10; that's just the nature of the game, but I'm just so pleased with him and his maturity level and where it's going."

Kashimoto's versatility has also made him quite the valuable commodity for the Crusaders.

"He's actually an infielder, but for our team we asked him to play in the outfield and he's grabbed a hold of that," Gusman said. "He just does what you ask and is one of those kids that will do whatever it takes for the betterment of the team, so he's a great example for the rest of the guys.

As a freshman last year, Kashimoto was promoted to the varsity squad after the completion of the JV season. However, he was mostly limited to pinch-running opportunities.

Over the offseason, Kashimoto worked diligently on his strength — which has continued on a daily basis even in season.

"He is unbelievably strong for a guy his size. He works really hard in the weight room and he's to the point where when he's waiting for his turn in the batting cage he's doing push-ups and sit-ups," Gusman said. "Nobody is telling him to do this; he does this on his own and he does this every day. He has no prior experience in the outfield, but he's worked really hard at it and he has a better arm than you'd imagine in the outfield."

Gusman compared the 5-foot-4 Kashimoto to former Saint Louis standout Kaeo Aliviado, who went on to star collegiately at the University of Hawaii.

"He's not like Kaeo, but yet he is," Gusman said. "He probably works harder than Kaeo did at this stage, he has as much power as Kaeo that people have not seen yet, but he can hit one out if he gets the right pitch. I just can't say enough about how much he's sacrificed for us and the other thing about him is he's a National Honor Society guy and he has great grades."

After Kashimoto's game-tying RBI triple in the seventh, Mid-Pacific reclaimed a one-run lead in the top of the eighth. However, Saint Louis answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to walk off with the much-needed victory.

"It's a short season — just 15 games — so you don't want to get too far behind everyone else, so for us to win that game against a team of that caliber and of that coaching ability, that was huge for our young guys. It was definitely huge for us to give us some confidence that we probably needed and it also brought us together just because of the way we had to battle back."

Kashimoto batted 1 for 4 in a 2-0 loss to Maryknoll Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders (2-2), ranked seventh in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Baseball Power Rankings, will take on No. 10 Kamehameha Thursday, 3:30 p.m. at Ala Wai Field.
