MAKIKI — Maryknoll took control in the first and third quarters to flatten Iolani, 51-31, for their fourth-straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I title at the Clarence T. C. Ching Gymansium on Tuesday.

The Spartans clinched the seeded berth and owned the season series winning 52-36 on Jan. 4 and 82-43 on Jan. 17. Maryknoll finished league play at 12-0, 26-2 overall.

"When you get to this pinnacle, you have an eye on the bigger prize, but you have to get through this to get to that. The kids did a great job tonight with the game plan," said Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado.

"It feels great to make history, but we're not done yet. We're taking steps to our main goal," said Kodee Viena.

The Raiders (9-4 ILH) make their first state tournament appearance since 2013 after knocking out Kamehameha on Monday, 48-44.

"It was a fun journey for us to see these freshmen come on. No one knew what to expect from them and to see them go through adversity and grow and contributing," said Iolani coach Dean Young.

Kodee Viena led the Spartans with 14 points, three assists, and two blocks, Kamalu Kamakawiwoole added 10 points, and Bella Cravens anchored the paint with eight points and 14 rebounds.

Lily Lefotu Wahinekapu poured in a game-high 18 points and scored Iolani's only basket in the first quarter as the Raiders shot 1 of 11 from the field. The Spartans dominated with an 18-0 run to close the first quarter.

Taylor Wu sank a pair of 3s that forced Furtado to call an early timeout. Lefotu Wahinekapu scored 10 of her 12 first-half points and hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, 28-21. The Raiders shot 5 of 9 from the perimeter.

"We needed to be patient in our offense. We're not used to playing at a slower tempo and it took them time to get into a rhythm. We came off a huge, tight game on Monday so it was hard to get them up and going. We fought back and cut it to seven so I'm proud of them," said Young.

"Those are all things we prepare for. It really bothers me the most when you prepare to do something and you lose focus of that. I'm a firm believer the game is not only played physically, but mentally. Three of the their best players got five of those 3's, that's unacceptable," said Furtado, on Iolani's hot streak.

Maryknoll held onto a 29-21 halftime lead.

"We had to recognize their shooters and focusing on those three (Lefotu Wahinekapu, Wu, Maeda)," said Viena, on second half adjustments.

The Spartans raced out to a 7-0 run to start the third quarter led by Kamakawiwoole and Viena to make it, 36-21. Similar to the first quarter, Iolani had open looks but couldn't get it to fall as it shot 1 of 10 from the field.

"I thought we had really good looks, but couldn't hit. It could be the legs and fatigue from last night," said Young.

"We felt we got back to what we do best in the third quarter. We did a better job protecting the 3-point line. Iolani is a tough to prepare for," said Furtado.

Lefotu Wahinekapu continued to attack the rim and Kellie Okamura's free throws brought the game within 11, 40-29 early in the fourth, but Maryknoll was too much and pulled away from there.

"It was big to focus on defense because if you let them shoot 3's, they can get back into the game," said Viena.

Okamura's free throws (2 of 2) were Iolani's only attempts of the game while the home team shot 8 of 16 (50 percent).
