EWA BEACH — On a night when its top scorer Gieani Balino was held to eight points under her average, Campbell showed it has others who can deliver too.

Danielle Silva drained a 3-pointer from the right baseline to snap a 32-all game with two minutes, 51 seconds left to rally Campbell by Nanakuli, 36-34, Friday night in a nail-biting finish of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls' basketball game at the Sabers' gym.

The Sabers remain tied for first with Mililani — both are 7-0 — while the Golden Hawks fell to 5-2.

"I was kind of off in the beginning, but that 3-pointer made me feel better," Silva said.

Balino led the Sabers with 10 points and Silva followed with seven, all coming in the second half.

Kalei Cates pulled a double-double for Nanakuli with a game-high 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also had two steals and a blocked shot. Kanani Diamond added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Silva had one of the Sabers' four 3-pointers, all of which came in the second half. That proved big for Campbell, which has relied on Balino who averaged 18.5 points per game entering the contest.

"That was clutch," Campbell coach Summer Aona said of Silva's 3-pointer. "I was telling her from the beginning that she needs to shoot. She has a nice touch on her ball. She doesn't use it as much, as she tries to do other things, like drive. Normally, people think Gieani's the only shooter, but we have a lot of tools in our toolbox. For Dani, I try to tell her to step up."

Nanakuli's defense made it tough for the Sabers to work the ball to Balino.

"I thought we played some good defense for three quarters and some of the fourth quarter," Nanakuli coach Sasha Montez said. "We just didn't play a complete game today and fell a little bit short. From the start, I said if we limited G (Gieani Balino) to half of what she's been making, I'm OK. Very proud of my girls coming out. We just fell a little short"

Nanakuli took a 17-12 lead into the second half but saw Campbell use the 3-pointer to chip away, and of course, take the lead.

The Golden Hawks opened their lead to 19-14 to start the third, but Taylynn Saniatan's 3-pointer pulled the Sabers to 19-17. Later Shantelle Sagucio's 3 tied the game at 20 with 3:38 left in the third. Sagucio followed with another basket with an assist by Balino to open Campbell's lead to 22-19. But the Golden Hawks regained control with an 8-2 run to end the period and a take a 27-24 lead into the fourth.

A foul two seconds into the quarter put Nanakuli's Misnash Savea to the free-throw line where she converted only one shot to make it 28-24.

A 3-pointer by Kimberlee Ung pulled Campbell to within 1, but Cates opened the lead with a field goal to make it 30-27. But Campbell tied it at 30 with 6:22 left when Balino converted a three-point play. Ung scored with 5:40 to put the Sabers ahead, 32-30, for only the second time in the game Campbell led. About two minutes later, Nanakuli tied it on a basket by Leila Kekuawela.

Silva's 3 came on Campbell's ensuing possession that put it ahead, 35-32. Nanakuli turned over the ball on a foul, but Silva missed the front end of a one-and-one and Cates got the rebound for Nanakuli and drove the length of the court to score and pull Nanakuli to 35-34 with 34 seconds left.

Nanakuli later fouled Balino, who made only the front-end of her one-and-one. But Cates' pass to Diamond went out of bounds with six seconds left. Balino was fouled with nine-tenths of a second left and she missed her foul shot and time ran out.

Aona admitted being nervous before the game. The Sabers had three lopsided victories in their last four games before facing Nanakuli.

"This was going to be a game that showed us what we were made of," Aona said. "I'm hoping that they could understand that. We have a chance to play on the last day of our season. If they can continue to play how we're playing, that's we want."
