PEARL CITY — Caylie Uyema scored a hat trick to lift Pearl City to a 3-2 win over visiting Mililani in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls soccer game Friday night.

A crowd of about 300 fans at Bino Neves Stadium saw the Chargers, No. 1 in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, improve to 3-0 pull into a four-way tie for second place in the seven-team division.

Pearl City avenged a trio of losses at the hands of Mililani last season, including 1-0 defeats in both the OIA title game and the third-place final of the state tournament.

"We kind of wanted to win because they beat us so many times, but it was a really good team effort," said Uyema, a sophomore. "This feels great. It was a really hard battle today."

Uyema got the Chargers on the board in the game's fifth minute. Her chip shot over Mililani goalkeeper Andrea Kenagy from about 25 yards out took one bounce before finding the left side of the net.

About midway through the first half, Uyema capitalized on another scoring chance. Her teammate, Kaila Takai, sent a cross into the 18-yard box from the right flank. The ball deflected a couple of times in front of the Mililani goal before Uyema collected it and fired a low, driving shot into the bottom left corner past Kenagy to make it a two-goal lead.

"Takai made that one run down in the corner and crossed that ball, that was fabulous," Pearl City coach Frank Baumholtz III said. "Most people would just stop, but she didn't. She was determined to get it and she almost fell on her back when she crossed that ball."

However, the third-ranked Trojans got goals from Jaylen Lum — off a 40-yard free kick in the 36th minute that deflected off the hands of Chargers' goalie Naomi Takata and into the goal — and Ali Fuamatu-Maafala two minutes later to pull even.

The match was tied, 2-2, at halftime.

The Chargers reclaimed the lead for good just seven minutes into the second half on a right-footed blast by Uyema from about 35 yards out.

"I kind of just won the ball and took a shot after," Uyema recalled.

Baumholtz credited Uyema for making the most of her opportunities and executing the game plan.

"She got three good touches. In practice she might miss every one of those, but tonight was her night, so she deserves all the credit," he said. "We kept emphasizing that the goalie keeps coming out and if we can get to the 20, shoot the ball."

Takata made three of her four saves in goal after halftime for Pearl City, while Kenagy made three saves for Mililani.

Each team registered six shots on goal.

"We didn't have an answer for their midfield transitioning to space so quickly and we weren't ready for the speed of play. Although we try to prepare for it during training, the intensity is not the same so we were a little flustered starting," Mililani assistant Darren Smith said, who served as acting coach in place of Ray Akiona Friday night.

Smith called the loss a wake-up call.

"We're certainly fine-tuning," he said. "It's going to be a work in progress, but it's something we needed to see and I'm happy that we saw it this early on."

The loss dropped the Trojans to 3-1 on the season.

Pearl City played without standouts Daelenn Tokunaga and Sunshine Fontes. Tokunaga was serving a league-mandated one-game suspension due to a red card — and consequent ejection — against Radford Tuesday, while Fontes is participating in a training camp with the U.S. Women's National Team U17s in Florida this week.

Fontes scored a goal in the 14th minute of the United States' 5-0 win over Haiti in an international friendly Tuesday.
