Kamehameha's Obrey, Roosevelt's Visoria lead weekly standouts

Female Athlete of the Week: Kalina Obrey, Kamehameha basketball
If Kalina Obrey's performance in last weekend's Orthopedic Associates Sacred Hearts Invitational is any indication of things to come, expect a huge season from the Kamehameha junior.

Obrey, a 5-foot-11 post player, averaged 19.3 points and led the Warriors to three wins in as many days in the eight-team preseason tournament.

"She was her typical excellent self," Kamehameha coach Joseph Cho said of Obrey. "Ever since I saw her as an eighth grader, she has always performed exceptionally in my book and so this weekend was no exception. At times when we needed a big bucket, she was there. When we needed a big rebound, she was there. When we needed a big stop, she was there. But that's typical of Kalina, so I don't expect anything less and I don't think she does. I guess sometimes I take it for granted; it's easy to do with her."

In Thursday's 58-44 win over Kamehameha-Maui, Obrey scored 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had one steal and a block. She went off for 19 points, 21 rebounds, two blocks, one steal and an assist in Friday's 65-49 win over Waiakea before closing out the weekend with 18 points, seven rebounds, one steal and an assist in Saturday's 49-41 win over Hawaii Baptist.

"She's very polished, very well-rounded, and she does everything well," Cho said. "There's not anything that is extraordinary, but it's so solid. Her rebounding is solid, her defense is solid, her offensive moves are solid and she's a good leader, obviously."

The leadership part has been a work-in-progress for Obrey, a third-year varsity member.

"She used to be a quiet leader, but now she's a little bit more of a vocal leader," Cho said. "As a freshman she kind of, I wouldn't say stay in her place, but she always respected the seniors. As a sophomore last year, she respected Mikiala Maio, and now this year as a junior she's more vocal, which is great."

While the skills and ability have always been there, Obrey's consistency has made great gains, Cho said.

"I would say that whatever we need from her, she gives to us. If we need rebounds, she'll give us rebounds. If we need points, she'll give us twenty, but one thing about her is she lets the game come to her," Cho said. "She doesn't force anything. She gets hammered so much, more than any post I've ever coached. She's a battler and the good thing about it is she has the skills to battle with."

Obrey is among a handful of veteran returnees that the Warriors will count on to offset the loss of Maio — last year's ILH Player of the Year and a First Team All-Hawaii selection — to graduation. Obrey, herself a First Team All-ILH and Second Team All-Hawaii pick last year, is coming off a fall sports season in which she helped the Warriors win the D1 girls state volleyball crown.

"She got a taste of what a championship should be and I'm sure it's given her a little bit more of what it takes to be a championship team, so it can only help her," Cho said.

Cho said Obrey, who wants to study business in college, has already drawn heavy interest from Willamette, his alma mater in Oregon.

"One thing I want to say is she's an excellent basketball player and she's an excellent volleyball player, but what makes Kalina very special is she's a great kid," Cho said. "She's a great young adult, she has her head on her shoulders the right way and like any proud coach would say, I'm honored to coach her and her parents are happy, I'm sure, with how she turned out as an athlete, student and person."

Obrey and the Warriors (9-1) open ILH play against Sacred Hearts Thursday night.

Male Athlete of the Week:
Micah Visoria, Roosevelt basketball
To say that Micah Visoria had an eventful weekend would be an understatement.

The Roosevelt junior averaged more than 17 points in three games and led the Rough Riders to the championship title of the Keaau-Waiakea preseason tournament on the Big Island last week.

Visoria, a 5-foot-9 junior, led his team in scoring in each game. He scored 18 points in a 20-point win over Seabury Hall Thursday, 15 in Friday's four-point win over Keaau, and 19 in Saturday's 10-point victory over Mid-Pacific in the title game.

But that was only Visoria's on-the-court exploits. During some team down time, Visoria sustained a deep laceration to his knee, which necessitated a trip to urgent care for some stitches.

"First he slept funny and he can't move his neck at all, but he plays against Seabury and then the next day he slips and falls at the pool and slices a chunk in his knee and all he was worrying about was playing against Keaau," said Roosevelt coach Steve Hathaway, who wasn't so optimistic.

"I said to him, 'there's no way you're playing.' It was a nasty gauge. The doctor said he could stitch it, but I didn't think he was going to play," Hathaway said. "That's the thing is he was hurt all weekend, he was never close one-hundred percent, but he played outstanding."

Visoria was effective beyond the arc, where he made eight 3-pointers, and efficient at the free-throw line, where he shot 16 of 17 in three tournament games.

Hathaway said Visoria's shooting has been steady since he first joined the varsity team as a freshman, but noted that other parts of his game has shown improvement over the years.

"I knew right away that this kid is the best shooter I've ever coached," Hathaway said. "I coached his brother (Isaiah) when he was at Roosevelt and I don't want to take anything away from him, but Micah is now becoming the total package. I think his freshman year he was more of just a 3-point shooter. Last year he developed a little more and now he's taking guys to the hoop, he's got a nice pull-up jumper. He's got everything right now."

Hathaway praised Visoria's work ethic for the player he has become.

"Just seeing the all-around player that he's coming, that's the biggest thing," Hathaway said. "He put in the work in the weight room so he's stronger, which makes him hard to guard because he's not just a shooter. Now he can take guys to the hoop."

Visoria's hot shooting was a key factor in a quick start for the Rough Riders against Mid-Pacific Saturday. They jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the opening quarter.

"The Keaau coach was watching the game and he told me that we shot 100 percent in the first quarter. Micah shot 3 for 3 on 3's in that first quarter; he must have had about twelve or fourteen points in the quarter," Hathaway said. "I know there's some good shooters in the state, but I'll put him up there with any of them."

Hathaway said feeding Visoria, who also doubles as the setter on the volleyball team in the spring, throughout the season will be an area of emphasis.

"We've stressed from day one that we gotta get Micah fifteen shots a night, so we're focusing on that because we know that if we don't, we'll be in trouble," Hathaway said. "So far we've been doing a good job of that, and the guys are doing good jobs setting screen and getting him open."

Hathaway is hopeful the tournament title will give his team some momentum and confidence going forward.

"I think the guys are seeing that we can play with anybody," Hathaway said. "Beating Mid-Pac, a D1 ILH team, is a big win and so I think these guys are believing more this year than they were in the past."

Visoria and the Rough Riders (3-0) will get another crack at the Owls Thursday in the first day of the eight-team OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua. They will also face Iolani Friday and Saint Louis Saturday.
