Iolani's title defense was in full effect Monday night.

The defending Division I state champions defeated visiting Waianae in straight sets at the Lower Gymnasium of the Father Kenneth A. Bray Athletic Complex in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA D1 Girls Volleyball Championships.

The sets scores were 25-9, 25-17, 25-19.

Sophomore outside hitter Elena Oglivie put down 15 kills on 28 swings to lead the second-ranked Raiders in the win. Senior Saige Kaahaaina-Torres, the reigning All-Hawaii Player of the Year, added nine kills while middle Sasha Petticord put down eight kills on 12 attempts.

Jasmine Fonoti led the Seariders in the loss with seven kills.

The Raiders move on to take on Maui Interscholastic League champion KS-Maui Thursday night in the quarterfinals. The match is slated for 5 p.m. at Moanalua.
