Nanakuli can finally raise a girls volleyball championship banner.

The Golden Hawks captured their first-ever Oahu Interscholastic Association title with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-15 win over Pearl City in the league's Division II championship match at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium Wednesday night.

"It means a lot to us because this is our first OIA championship for volleyball," said senior outside hitter Janae Odom. "I really wanted my (senior) year to be the one to bring home the banner in our gym."

Nanakuli, who improved to 6-6 with the win, dominated the service line with 14 aces by six different players in its championship sweep.

"A lot of it comes down to them as that's the only thing they can control," said Wong. "They don't control anything else on that court but that serve, that toss and that swing. If they can control that ball, we have a better advantage at getting points as you saw tonight."

Nanakuli's serving prowess wasn't just key, it was clutch.

After dominating the opening set, the Golden Hawks fell into an early 3-0 hole in Game 2. Nanakuli battled back to tie it at 3 before the two teams traded points until it was a 6-all game.

Following a Pearl City ball-handling error, Odom rattled off three straight aces during a 7-0 run to put Nanakuli ahead for good, 12-6.

In the third set, the two teams battled it out for the early stages of the frame with neither team leading by more than three points until Nanakuli went on a 6-0 run to take control. Jeanie Palsis had, who had a match-high five aces, spearheaded the run with three straight aces that went off three different Pearl City players.

"They served really tough," said Pearl city coach Bryan Camello. "They were the aggressor tonight and they took us out of system. The No. 1 thing was they were the aggressor. They earned it and they did a great job."

Odom led the offense with 16 kills, 18 digs and four aces. She had eight of her kills in Game 2, which included a 5-0 stretch where she put down four kills and one block.

"We definitely have a great leader, and we couldn't ask for more from her," Wong said of Odom.

While Odom has been the Golden Hawks' main offensive threat throughout the season, she didn't have to do it alone against the Chargers (5-8). Carly-Rose Letatau-Kekahuna, ShayAnn Hoohuli and Kanani Diamond all had six kills apiece, while Puakenekene Cressy-Emos and Palsis had four and one kill respectively.

"That's pretty much what we worked on the last two weeks, which was incorporating everyone else in our offense and trying to get a more balanced offense," said Wong. "Through their hard work, we was able to distribute the ball much better as you saw tonight."

Cheylah-Marie Marfil was at the controls with 31 assists while Kaanela Pae and Palsis had 26 and 21 digs respectively to lead the back row.

"Everybody contributed and everybody just wanted it," said Odom.

Rebecca Matapua had seven kills, two aces and 17 digs to lead the Chargers in the loss.

Both teams will represent the OIA in the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Volleyball Championships, which begin on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
