Farrington's Eter, Radford's Steer provide postseason push

Male Athlete of the Week: Stephen Eter, Farrington football
Stephen Eter did not disappoint in his first full game at quarterback.

The Farrington senior accounted for five total touchdowns to help the Governors defeat Castle, 36-14, last Saturday at Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I playoffs.

Eter, who is 5-foot-9 and weighs 135 pounds, has played multiple positions for the Governors throughout his high school career, but has never played an entire game as the team's field general.

That changed last weekend when Eter had his best game of his career, completing 15 of 22 passes for 174 yards and four scores. He also added 46 yards on the ground while scoring his first rushing TD of the season.

"He has a good grasp of the offense, even though it's his first year, because he played free safety (last season)," said Farrington coach Randall Okimoto. "He showed that he could (understand) the offense quickly, as well as execute it."

Throughout 2017, Eter split time at quarterback with junior Chris Afe-Alaivanu, a burly 6-foot-1, 273-pound tank that also doubles as a tight end. When Eter wasn't behind center, he was running routes as a receiver.

Okimoto said that Eter's experience at multiple positions is a plus for his team.

"He's a smart player. He knows offenses, defenses, and he knows pretty much everything that we're doing so much that he's creative. He wants to create his own plays, which can get us in trouble at times, but I like that. It just shows his growth. It's good to see players learning and being able to think at that level."

While Eter has put in work to improve his throwing mechanics, the biggest area of his growth that Okimoto is proud of is Eter's leadership ability.

"Being the quarterback, it's not easy. His teammates look to him for leadership and he's a guy that touches the ball all the time. People seem to point the finger at the QB a lot. With that position comes a lot of responsibility, and he's grown in that area."

Eter's leadership was on full display after the first half against the Rams.

Radford, whose only win of the season was a forfeit over Kaiser, played Farrington tight through two quarters as both teams were tied 6-6 at the break.

Heading into the second half, Okimoto said Eter listened to his position coach and was more vocal in the huddle and sideline.

Eter would go on to throw three touchdown passes to three different receivers in the second half to give Farrington a firm 29-6 lead seven seconds into the fourth quarter.

"In the second half, we had a much better outcome, and that's a testament to his leadership," said Okimoto.

Having Eter at quarterback full time also allowed other players to have career games. Afe-Alaivanu caught two passes for 53 yards and two scores, his first receiving TDs of the season and wide receiver Chad Silva caught a season-high six passes for 84 yards and a 20-yard TD.

"He commands the offense, he's a field general, he will direct everyone and that's good," Okimoto said of Eter.

Eter and the Governors will look to extend their season when they travel to Waianae Friday night in the quarterfinal round.

Girls Athlete of the Week: Shaniece Steer, Radford girls volleyball
When the Radford girls volleyball team needed someone to take charge, Shaniece Steer never hesitated.

The Rams sophomore outside hitter had a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs to lead Radford over Leilehua in three sets last Wednesday night, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12, in a pivotal Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division match at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

Steer also added two aces and a block assist to help the Rams clinch the OIA West's final berth into the league's Division I postseason tournament.

Even though the Rams' playoff hopes were on the line, Radford coach Candice Fujiwara said that the pressure never fazed Steer.

"She was just true to her ability, and it really showed through the (match)," Fujiwara said of Steer. "She didn't get emotional, she just stayed focused and we really needed that so she really stepped up her play."

Fujiwara also said that Steer plays well above her age, but noted that the best is yet to come.

"She's such a great team player and is just a great example for her teammates. She's just a sophomore, but she has a lot more years ahead of her. She's just a great person on and off the court. She practices with fire, and plays with fire as well."

With just two six-rotation players on her team, Fujiwara said Steer's presence on the court is invaluable for her young squad.

One example of this is when Steer sprained her ankle in practice before the last week of September. Even though she was limited in her next match against Mililani, Fujiwara said they were "very desperate" to get her on the floor.

"Her team needed her on the court. She was probably at 30 percent of her ability, and we stuck her in there, just because her teammates were comfortable. Even if she couldn't give her 100 percent, just to have her on the court shows what kind of person she is and what her teammates feel about her, and I think that's huge just being a sophomore."

Fujiwara added that Steer has matured immensely since transferring in from Florida during the middle of the 2016 season.

"She's naturally talented, but the difference between last year and this year is her volleyball knowledge. She's just composed with herself, and not getting so excited and just wanting to hit balls, to make kills."

Steer's maturity was on full display on the match-winning point against Leilehua. After the Mules sided out, Steer recorded the match-clinching point on a soft-speed hit from the right side.

"The Shaniece from last year would not have done that," said Fujiwara. "She would have gone out to want to swing, but instead, she just went up and was very smart about it and just rolled the ball knowing that we've been hitting consistently and they've been digging balls."

To top off the week, Fujiwara said Steer promoted to captain when the role was made open last Saturday.

"I asked the team: ‘who wants to step up and be captain?' And she raised her hand, nobody did except her," Fujiwara said of Steer.

"She steps up and wants to be the leader. She's not afraid, even as a sophomore."

Steer and the Rams will take on Kahuku in the first playoff match at Waianae Wednesday night.
