Leilehua's McGary, Moanalua's Crisostomo headline top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: James McGary, Leilehua football
James McGary outdid himself Saturday night.

The junior running back carried 26 times for an incredible 319 yards and two touchdowns to help Leilehua to a 38-14 win over visiting Kailua on homecoming night.

McGary, who is 5 feet, 11 inches and weights 170 pounds, averaged 12.3 yards per rush and scored on long runs of 56 and 40 yards in the first half.

"We've come a long way from where we started the season to now and we played better (Saturday)," Mules coach Mark Kurisu said. "James hit his spots and he broke off a couple. We didn't know he would break it off for that many yards, but he made the offense run a little more efficiently."

That would, most certainly, be an understatement.

Leilehua posted a 511 yards of total offense, including 336 rushing, and did not turn the ball over.

Kurisu backed up McGary's post-game praise of the offensive line, which had been a work in progress for much of the season.

"I think he said it best, you've got to give it up to the o-line," Kurisu said. "He just trusted that o-line. When you tell someone to hit a hole at full speed without chattering your feet, that eliminates a lot of possible tacklers and looking at the video, you can see how many tacklers he got by. Once he broke the cease, he just took it to the next level and that shows his growth and the level he's running at now. Kailua is a great defense; for him to have done that was pretty special."

As McGary has grown, so have the bulldozers up front, Kurisu said.

"We've been moving some linemen around. We've got a couple of defensive linemen playing both ways, but it's just everybody understanding what their role is on the team and they're doing their job," he said. "We know we can still get better, and we know we can clean things up a lot more."

McGary's first TD run of 56 yards gave his team a 14-0 lead with 4:54 left in the first quarter. His 40-yard TD run with 9:47 remaining in the first half stretched the lead to 28-0.

"We knew we could run the ball, (but) we didn't know we could run it that well," Kurisu said. "Our scout team defense give our offense a hard time and we knew that if we worked really hard in practice that it should be a little easier by the time we get to the game because they've seen it so often. It goes back to the kids trusting the process and bringing it to the field and executing. We're excited as a team for how much we've grown so far, especially when it comes to the running game."

Kurisu likened McGary, who started out the season at receiver, to former Detroit Lions' running back Barry Sanders.

"He's a slasher and he'll definitely get into the gaps, but he's deceivingly strong as a runner and he knows how to eliminate the big hit," Kurisu said. "He's not like the traditional local boy football player, who wants to run somebody over. Instead, he'll limit the big hits and damage he takes on the body."

McGary's return to the backfield was a natural fit for an offense that has struggled to find a consistent running game the last few seasons.

"We tried to see if we can get him out in space as a slotback — his original spot was at running back — and when we were passing he did well, he caught passes, broke away a couple times, but we realized that teams don't play the pass (defensively), so it was harder to get the ball to him, so we put him back home in the backfield and you can see how much more comfortable he is back there."

In each Leilehua's last four games — all of them, wins — McGary recorded a season-high in rushing yards. He carried nine times for 40 yards against Kapolei, eight times for 84 yards against Castle and 10 times for 100 yards against Nanakuli.

For the season, McGary has run for 553 yards — the second-higher mark in D1 statewide — and four TDs despite having 51 fewer carries than Kamehameha's Kanoa Shannon, the state's rushing leader.

McGary and the ninth-ranked Mules improved to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red standings. They can clinch the division's second seed and a first-round bye in next month's league tournament with a win over No. 8 Farrington Friday night.

Female Athlete of the Week: Hula Crisostomo, Moanalua girls volleyball
Hula Crisostomo has been as steady as a rock for the Moanalua girls volleyball team.

The senior libero played exceptional defense in wins over Kahuku and Kalani last week to help eight-ranked Na Menehune improve to 8-0 atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division standings.

Moanalua has had to adjust to a new lineup with different players in different roles all season, but Crisostomo has been a consistent presence all year long.

Na Menehune coach Alan Cabanting said that Crisostomo's ability to keep balls in play helps mitigate the fact that his team doesn't have a true power hitter.

"She pretty much digs a ton of balls so we have a lot more opportunities to attack the ball that we might have," said Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting. "Since we don't have that ‘terminator,' it takes us two to three times to put balls away."

Against the Red Raiders last Tuesday, the defending OIA Division I champs, Crisostomo's defense helped Na Menehune win their first three-set match of the season in a 25-22, 17-25, 15-7 victory.

"She kept us in a ton of plays, those girls were hitting hard," Cabanting said of the match against Kahuku. "There was couple of plays there that most liberos won't be able to make."

Crisostomo, a 2016 All-Hawaii Second Team selection, followed up her outing against Kahuku with 26 digs against the Falcons in a 25-18, 25-17 win just two days later.

Even though Crisostomo suffered a shoulder injury during the preseason, Cabanting said she gives her best effort no matter the situation.

"The great thing about Hula is you're going to get the same performance from her day in and day out," said Cabanting. "When someone new comes and watches her and she makes a spectacular play, someone new watching will be like ‘wow.' But for those that see her every game, now it's got to the point where it's almost an expectation."

The senior libero's consistency on defense also has helps the rest of the team stay composed in tight situations.

"Since we get the same thing from her week in and week out, it helps us out when we do get pressure," said Cabanting.

While nothing has changed in terms of her play on the court, Cabanting said Crisostomo has matured much greater as a leader.

"She used to lead by example, but this year, I think with the maturity and knowledge that she's a senior, she's able to vocalize a lot more in the huddles. She's letting girls what to do and putting energy into the girls when we need it."

Cabanting added that Crisostomo is more comfortable holding her teammates accountable.

"She's OK saying the things she should say as a leader, and not worried what other girls think now. As a ninth grader, 10th grader still maturing into the role, you would often care about what the other girls think. Now, she's doing what's best for the team and taking the leadership role well."

Crisostomo and Na Menehune takes on Anuenue (1-7) Tuesday night before traveling to Kaneohe to take on the tenth-ranked Knights (7-0) on Thursday.
